The “yarn walls” some people show off on TikTok and on KZfaq are wild. I can’t imagine having that big of a stash unless, like you said, I did crochet for a living. Having every single shade of every single color is so unnecessary. It’s excessive and unrealistic. Unless you do it for a living, i don’t even see why you’d want an entire wall of your house full of yarn.

I think everyone needs to make their own decision with their yarn purchasing. I just don’t like how much people on social media encouraging bad spending habits. No one should feel pressured that you have to have a certain amount of yarn to be a “real” crocheter either.

I learned to crochet by making granny squares and then learned to make flowers from Arne and Carlos patterns and videos before I made my first Amigurumi. I use the magic ring when making spherical balls for Ami. I otherwise do it the other way for almost everything else. The magic ring doesn't work for me when making blankets with various shapes. I tried the magic ring and it looks really strange -- my personal take is that there a place for both methods and they aren't always interchangeable.

I agree with you!! I do the chain 2 method, especially on the thicker yarns.

Great video! I do use the magic ring but I think it’s because it took me so long to master, lol. I agree with everything else tho!! Very balanced and helpful info 😃

I learned from Woobles. Working in the round is harder for sure. What I love about amigurumi is they are very quick and fun to show off. The first time I tried something bigger (a hat) it felt like it took FOREVER. Now I swap back to little friends whenever I get sick of a long project.

@@schumama8440 totally agree. When I made that bag in my target kit video it felt like I was dying because it took so long!!

The very first time i picked up a crochet hook years ago, I did a plain single crochet single color scarf. I've crocheted on and off for years but I've just gotten serious about it in the last probably 6 months or so. I probably started amigurumi too early in my crochet journey. My plushies started as looking *very* cursed. 😹 Which was a little disheartening but I kept at it and they're looking better, not perfect, but better. I feel yarn hoarding is a nuanced issue but it definitely an issue. As someone with several creative hobbies, it's so easy to fall into. No judgement if/when crafters fall into it, but as long as your very mindful then maybe you can avoid it. I donated a *ton* of yarn recently because I can only crochet so much and only have so much space.

To be fair I think cursed amigurumi are part of the process 😅 Yarn hoarding and hoarding in general is a complicated topic. I’m not sure there is one right way for everyone but I just don’t like the encouragement of mindless spending in general.

I learned with amigurumi and I totally agree it’s not the best type of project to start with. I pushed through and discovered I don’t like doing small projects period. I, eventually and after years, mainly switched to knitting because I like making clothing and like the drape of knitting. But socks, no. Too small :)

I’m so the opposite! I only like small projects. I have never even made any wearables besides hats and scarfs. Knitting does have much nicer drape. I agree.

I've been knitting for a few years, but have yet to find a KZfaq channel that helps me learn crochet. Can you recommend anyone? I tried amigurumi, but I can't get the hang of it. After watching this, I understand why! I agree with everything you said.

I love TL yarn crafts but I learned to crochet from a library book so I’m not sure I’m much help! I feel like it’s become a thing for people to learn with amigurumi and it seems to work for some and not others. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@Tfwcrochet Thanks! I’ll check them out. My biggest problem is keeping tension. I guess I just need to practice.

@@Valleybrookdesigns I think that’s the biggest thing when it comes to amigurumi and yeah just takes lots of practice!

I am so glad you did a hot takes video 😊 and I totally agree with your hot take on amigarumi as a first project. I can understand the cuteness of toys making people want to start there, but for me it always looked harder then making wearables. 😅 I was hoping one of your hot takes would be on the rise of all these AI generated crochet 🧶 channels. Have you seen these channels? Do you find the AI generated crochet pieces inspiring?

Yes toys are cute and small so people think easy but they’re really not! I have seen individual AI images which I sometimes think are cute. But I didn’t know there were whole AI generated channels!? That is wild!
