BBC's prematch build-up to the ireland v france in the 2007 six nations included this, a history of Croke Park. In my opinion it is done pretty well.

Croke Park is not just a Stadium, it is a monument to the men and women who fought and achieved our independence.

I think it's a shame that hurling, the most skillful and fastest field sport in the world, will never get the recognition it deserves outside Ireland. I showed my English cousin a video of a Cork vs Kilkenny final and he thought we were mad because to him it seemed very dangerous...just shows the skill level required to play the national game.

The photo of the moment was a guy standing outside Croke park with a placard saying "no to foreign sports in Croke park" He was wearing a Glasgow Celtic jersey under his jacket. He had probably been to Parkhead in Glasgow more often than he had ever been to Croke park.

Croke park is far better than the AVIVA for several reasons bigger capacity less expensive to build,but the main reason is while both stadiums have an unfinished end hill 16 has a purpose in generating atmosphere avivas end doesn't do that
@phillipwilloughby50133 жыл бұрын
I think Aviva has an unfinished end because of the railway line which is used by DART and Rosslare Intercity. When I used the DART the line passed the unfinished end of Aviva.

@@phillipwilloughby5013 nope the residents didn't want north end the same height as south end, always preferred Croker myself better atmosphere.

And as always, never mention that 3 of the 14 were children.

The difference between croker and the 3 stadiums u just mentioned is that fact that it a amateur game is played in this stadium so the money that is got from matches etc is divided to among the clubs in ireland to improve the game, unlike the 3 other stadiums

In fact the RIC didn't even have jurisdiction in Dublin prior to 1919, Dublin was Europe's most crime ridden and poverty stricken city in Europe at the turn of the century and had it's own separate police force - the Dublin Met - to deal with the scale of the cities problems. However, the Met voted to act in line with the democratic wishes of the country following the 1918 elections and refused to operate against the IRA. The RIC members in Dublin by1919 were majority foreign born.

@eire18 I disagree, maybe when they finish it yes, but not right now no way - not with that mound of rubble at one end called Hill 16 instead of a contiguous tiered stand like the rest of it.

Croke park has been opened so that our national teams would not have to go abroad to play home internationals. I think there would be alot of opposition from the GAA county boards if club soccer was played in Croker

Actually the Home Rule Bill was passed by Westminster and received Royal assent on 18th September 1914. The IRA fired at the troops from the Rossville flats.

i was at the first game against france it was terrific the irish boys raised their game above anything beause of where the ywere play, can you imagine a catholic mass at mecca well thats whats its like. i;m glad it was rugby first and not soccer, a real sport and plus rugby was invented by an irish man(webb ellis) (he was from tipperary) and how fitting that it was played there

Plans for partition were drawn up in April 1914 after the UVF imported 25,000 rifles and three million rounds of ammunition from the German Empire. There was no way for Westminster to pass the Home Rule Bill without causing a fullscale civil war in Ulster. World War I was fought to limit German naval expansion. The UK had considered carrying out pre-emptive strikes on the Imperial German Navy on two occasions before 1914, just as we destroyed the Danish navy during the Napoleonic Wars.
@RobertK19935 жыл бұрын
Actually, partition was decided on 6th December 1921. UVF threats of murdering Catholics didn't get them no where.

well if you do your research sir/madam his father was stationed in tipperary town as an officer(i think) and he was born(maybe raised there) i have not completed this research but evidence is strong towards this being true, he did live there and a game called Cad and i suppose when he went to rugby school he thought they were playing cad and the ywere playing football but you neevr know i'm only specualting thats all, its nice sentement though

Croke Park is the pinnacle for any GAA player. when the likes of Brian O'Driscoll and Robbie Keane get to play there all the time, often in meaningless matches, it totally downgrades the place! I understand why soccer & rugby have to be played there at the moment, but once lansdowne rd is rebuilt I hope they never get to play there again, as I personally believe they don't deserve the honour to do so.

Are you serious? There was a pre-season NFL game played in Croke Park, there was no fuss because the Americans had nothing to do with 1916, read a History book, research Irish History in 1916 and answer you own question.

@thosewerehappydays That could be debated, but that would for another day. It still doesn't make the FS the IRA! The FS never claimed to be the IRA so why are you making this claim? This argument has gone on too long. The facts remain; It was British agents that the IRA killed that morning(ACT OF WAR), and Irish civilians that the Tans (not the RIC) murdered in Croke Park(WAR CRIME)...

@stoney71457 жыл бұрын
I don't know what the yankee stadium means to americans,but croke park is something else to the irish.The GAA own the stadium and the GAA has one million members thats one fifth of irelands population its a volunteer amateur organisation yet this organisation has built the largest non soccer stadium in europe and 4th overall.The sports themselves are fantastic hurling and gaelic football and are the most attended sports in ireland and there is a club in every village and town in ireland
