Sorry I think they left out that the “suspected British agents” were murdering innocent Irish people for standing up for their rights and that the retaliation didn’t just kill people in croke park, they drove in to an innocent match filled with civilians and opened fire on innocent people?! 🤦🏻♀️ this was not a ‘retaliation’, this was Bloody Sunday.

Was against it at the time tbh as I would come from a GAA background as I always considered Croke Park to be Ours. I went to the French match and watch the English match in the pub and enjoyed the great win but I think the overall feeling was that something important and good had just happened or had come to pass. It was like being forced to make up with someone you were fighting with when you weren’t ready to forgive them but were glad afterwards that you did. It did help that we stuffed England but in truth I don’t think they were up for that match at all, perhaps deep down they are decent blokes and played their part in the healing. As a footnote I was delighted that we stuffed a team coached by Brian Aston as he was very disparaging about the Irish team when he was in charge of them and famously said after we lost a match “ I don’t know who’s game plan they were playing but it wasn’t mine”. Ireland used to be truly awful back then, glad those days are over.

There was never going to be trouble that day. We Irish might like to moan and groan, but we are also very passive. There are always a few trouble makers, who would even cause trouble at their own mother's funeral, but the Irish were ready to accept this. Of the 83'000 people there that day, there wasn't a peep out of any of them. The whole fear factor was media driven. Had the media not have been driving it, no one would even have noticed. It was a great day. Just shows you that any fence can be mended.

If it is the case that you are related, I'm sure they must be turning in their grave, knowing that they are responsible for a sad little person like you. I love the abuse. Yeah, let’s be us ourselves, alone! Who cares if millions of €’s in revenue are lost by being “us ourselves”? Millions that will be used to cement the well-being of the organization and the members of the organization as they expand their clubs, their facilities, their playing fields, their members, their players and their ambitions and aspirations!! And you know what, those extra millions go out over all of Ireland. Even to the places where the Irish taxpayer can’t subsidise and fund expansion and improvements! It’s quite a sad thing considering that the events that happened weren’t the same English people that are alive today. Most English people, such as myself, have strong Irish connections anyway so we see it differently to the English of the past.

@@68iansutton If you were Irish, Welsh, or Scottish, you would understand. Yes, it's not the same English people alive today, but we still have the consequences of their actions and have to live with it everyday. Us Welsh get our language mocked everyday by the English, and not as many people speak it as there should be, so I can't imagine how much worse it is for the Irish and Scots where far less speak their language. Our ancestors were treated horribly by the English and we're not just going to forget about it, you should never forget your history.
