'Crooked House: Fire At ‘Wonkiest’ Pub Being Treated As Arson'
Staffordshire Police are treating the destruction of Britain’s ‘wonkiest' pub as arson.
The Crooked House near Dudley caught fire on Saturday evening, just over a week after it had been sold to new owners.
Around 30 firefighters tackled the blaze, but said they were initially impeded by a blocked access road.
The remains of the pub were then unexpectedly bulldozed on Monday.
South Staffordshire Council said it had not agreed to the total destruction of the 18th Century building.
Police say they have spoken to the owners of the pub and continue to engage with them.
Fire investigators examined the grounds on Wednesday, but as yet have not determined the cause of the fire.

It was built in 1765, then 9 days after the new owners who purchased the building and land, a property firm (ATE Farms Ltd) with the same registered address as the quarry and landfill business (Himley Environmental Ltd) adjacent to the pub, took possession the building was mysteriously engulfed in flames and then razed to the ground before fire services could check for arson, it doesn't take inspector Clouseau to work out who did it and why they wanted the building gone. I think someone will be doing a long stretch in a HMP pretty soon 👍

We all know whose behind this and why but knowing it and proving it are two totally different things, unless someone grasses them up I can't see how they can get done for it , what ever happens the pubs gone never to return, if you rebuilt it it would only be a facsimile of the original.

The owners and the person who physically demolished this building should all go to prison. There is nothing "alleged" about this demolision - its a blatent disregard for history, local people, and the law. Every single one of them needs to go to prison as any fine has already been built into their costings. Absolutely disgusting.

Arson is Criminal Damage by fire. You cannot commit Criminal Damage to anything if you own it or have a lawful excuse. Interfering with a crime scene is Obstructing a Police Officer. Let’s hope they are investigating this also. There are also offences that can be committed in relation to insurance.

Private companies don't need to have any regards towards history or local people. It's up to the council to list the property to protect it, if it's deemed worthy. They didn't. British people don't seem to understand what motivates private companies.

@@nicholasmartin787 check the law definition and show me a case please. ‘Section 1(1) of the Criminal Damage Act 1971 creates an offence of destroying or damaging any property belonging to another person, whether intentionally or recklessly, without lawful excuse’.

A landlord near us also demolished his pub accidentally on purpose. The local council made him rebuild it brick by brick.

haah good. I remember hearing about a house that was listed and they knocked it down. they also had to rebuild it. it was a mansion as well. must have cost millions to rebuild. get rekt. hate scum who damage priceless works of art (buildings). knock down as many brutalist buildings and housing estates as you please though. lol

@@jackworsley2562look up The Carlton Tavern in London. It took six years of locals campaigning and a legal battle, but the developers were forced to “rebuild brick by brick”. I believe it finally reopened in 2021.

The fact that the owners had people come to demolish it only hours after the fire should instantly tell you that they’re responsible for it. So if you should be looking into anyone for causing the fire, it’s gotta be the owners or somebody they hired to do it. I know it’s their property but it was a pending listed structure from the 1700s and they had literally no permission to demolish it to my knowledge so they at least should be charged with something

You do not need council permission to clear up rubble. The fire was created to destroy the property AKA (Demolish) the bull dozens were used to (clear the rubble) which is exactly what the owners will say. Their is no case here buddy. Nothing will come of it. The world is cruel and unforgiving. Best off moving on, after all it was just a wonky building that had a pub in it. I'm sure you and everyone else will survive mate.

Been loads of these in Leicester over the years. People buy a property, cannot get change of use or a preservation order e.g. on the façade of the building and then it accidentally catches fire so the land can then be used for what the developer originally had in mind

There are, of course, a large number of *Arabs* & other foreigners livng in Leicester with a few what remains of the indigenous. Many won't have any attachment or affinity with *our* once thriving and quite uniquely British pub culture. So they inevitably buy up the land, a "mysterious" fire breaks out. and Bob's your uncle! Then have a luxury apartment complex built on the site.

But you don't need it, if you wanna clear up rubble, hence the mysterious fire which the police cannot prove.

I agree with the sentiment to rebuild it, but the entire charm of the place was that it hasd subsided due to coal digging in the area. If they falsely build it at an angle it just wont be the same. I do however think the new owners should be jailed for this wanton criminal act.

I don't think you realise this... the property wasn't never listed as a historic site. The owner who bought the place legally can do whatever they want with it. The owners will not be charged at all.

There was a place just South of Crewe called Betley Manor which (genuine accident) caught fire and was completely gutted... Despite the damage they didn't knock it down though, they're rebuilding it! It's blatantly obvious to anyone with even half of a braincell what has happened here... They should be made to rebuild it to EXACTLY as it was, and then the company investigated and some VERY hefty fines against the company AND individuals dealt out, as well as some jail sentences! I hope that if nothing else happens then whatever plans the company involved put in for the site are rejected... Although the council are corrupt anyway, and will no doubt be getting a nice back-hander for it!! 🙄

Was the COUNCIL notified ahead of the demolition? Things like this demolition don't happen overnight, it can take months or years back and forth with meetings with conservationists, council and owners regarding the fate of buildings.

We had a listed pub here that one Sunday suddenly burnt to the ground, funnily enough the fire engine had a similar excuse, now it's posh hoses and flats, happens a lot when listed buildings are an obstruction too profit.

I'm not British and yet I knew of this historic house, it's really sad what happened, such an emblematic building should have been better protected, this is part of UK's culture and heritage, not just an asset in the balance book of some business.

Carly Taylor who's husband owns the landfill quarry next to the pub purchased it from Marstons in July ,this was surprising has they have been in conflict with the brewery over the shared access road for quite some time. The landlords of the pub who still had a few year's left on their contract went out for a while while they were away somebody? broke in and totally wrecked the place leaving them unable to continue trading so they had to vacate. Within days of them leaving large piles of soil were placed in the lane blocking access a few days later the fire no fire engines could get close to it.

I recall this pub in the 90's being a very popular attraction. This level of subsidence must have been hefty on insurance. What next a new road or housing development. It is happening with listed buildings all over. Land and access mean everything.

Happened where i live in kingston upon thames, grade 2 listed pub was purchased by developers, closed down and boarded up squaters moved in, owners applied to coucil to redevelope site and was refused, couple weeks later a sucurity firm removed the squaters, next night the building mysteriously burnt to the ground, then permission was granted to redevelope the site as requested. Strange that?

Anyone interested in campaigning for the pub to be rebuilt should check out the Carlton Tavern in Maida Vale, London which HAS BEEN totally and exactly rebuilt after being demolished without permission in 2015

The fact national heritage dating back to the 1700s could be destroyed in this manner just shows how far down the drain this country has gone. That’s what happens when people are put in charge who feel no affiliation for our country’s national heritage.

So sad for all associated with the building. My money would be on developers who want to acquire the land for houses. To put a wrecking ball through the remains like that is fishy.

I knew it was arson I knew it. Throw the book at these criminal unscrupulous developers. Arson to destroy a historic building . The slant was part 0f the charm.

This is disturbing. Noone would ever set fire to a pub that's going out of business due to the fact noone can afford to go out due to the economy collapsing. It would NEVER happen!!!!!
