The company would have taken out insurance on the property surely, it there wasn’t the intention to rebuild after the fire then permission should have been asked before demolition? The owners should be made to rebuild the pub if not on the original site but then maybe at the Black Country Museum if possible.

Hate to p*ss in everyone's pool but current owners ATE Farms Ltd is controlled by Carly Taylor, 34. Her husband Adam, 44, is a shareholder and former director of Himley Environmental Ltd which operates a landfill next to the Crooked House site. A number of news outlets already have reported that planning permission was sought earlier this year with Staffordshire County Council, which funny enough is outside Alan Street's jurisdiction on every front, for the landfill site to be redeveloped into a combination of industrial space, office space, retail space, conference facilities, and more than 30 residential holiday lodges. If a crime has been committed then its down to the authorities, but at the end of the day its private ownership. Thats capitalism baby. Suck it up.

@@Redpilled66 I disagree, Andy Street is basically stating that he's backing Dudley Council's investigation. As mentioned in the video, The Carlton Tavern in Maida Vale case and the judgement court where the outcome was the developer had to pay for the rebuild of a grade 2 listed pub brick by brick was down to Westminister Council's investigation into what was a very fishy demolition. That was a pub from the 1920's, the Crooked House is built from 1765 so the case is even stronger in my view.

Most odd (NOT) about the "fire of The Crooked House" pub, soooo soon after it was sold!☹️☹️☹️. Very similar action was taken on a historic pub opposite where I live. Called the Halfway House for a reason - halfway between London and Oxford on the A40. All of a sudden, the back of it was "demolished", with historic front kept, then that was taken down and a most monstrous block of flats that look like prison blocks built instead, with the owners saying "oh we didn't know it had historic protection". A useless local government we had then and unfortunately still there!🤬🤬🤬🤬

I don't think they actually gave them permission for a demolition. This issue smells because, as I am thinking, the land owners bought the land but can't develop it due to a Grade 2 building on the site. The developers would want that off the land before developing so by creating an insurance case they could demolish the site under the grounds it's a fire hazard and then put a "redevelopment" case to the council. Why does it sound so familiar? It's The Carlton Tavern in Maida Vale case all over again!

The point is potentially multiple criminal offences have been committed here. It is right to set an example with this one. If found guilty, then land should be taken off them, by compulsory purchase. Prison sentences also. Yes, I am living very close by to where The Crooked house was, and yes i am devastated for the loss of this amazing and unique building. Also sad for all the locals which this meant so much to them about their heritage. I fell in love with this quirky little place when i first went there 13 years ago when i moved to the Black country, my now Husband so excited to take me to The Crooked house, and later on we had our wedding there. Here is a list of some of the pubs in the local area that have burnt down in recent history (earliest is 2006, I think, but most are much more recent). They are all within 20 miles radius of The Crooked House. Some may be genuine accidents and not all were missed by the locals, being derelict or eyesores. Others were much loved but inconveniently in the way. I'm not implying anything, other than this seems kind of a common occurrence. Does anyone else know of any more? (In the local area, list all those in the UK and there would be thousands...) The Tayleur Arms in Longdon upon Tern, near Wellington Swan pub at Waters Upton (Now houses) The Vine, Lichfield Road, Aston (Arson) The Ravenscroft, Small Heath (Plans for care home) The Bagot Arms, Erdington (now a block of flats) Pudding and Pint, Oscott (now houses) The Farcroft, Handsworth (Fire damaged and derelict) The Kingstanding pub, Kingstanding. (Soon to be an ALDI) The Merrivale, Oldbury.(Badly fire damaged and now derelict) The Queens Head, Smethwick (Now Houses). Ring o' Bells, Yardley (Now houses) The Crown and Cushion, Yardley (Now 100 apartment development) The Harlscott, Shrewsbury (Arson) The Countess's Arms, Western Heath (Arson) The Bromford, Bromford Road (Now a care home) The Anchor Inn, Brownhills (Arson. Rebuilding as it was can easily be done, but the unique nature of its “crooked” stance will mean employing specialist expertise, techniques, and materials costing hundreds of thousands of pounds more that a “straight” building occupying the same footprint, with the same internal layout… It wouldn’t feel the same.. But it would be a monument to the cultural heritage it represents, and should the current owners be found guilty of having demolished it or having been responsible for it being demolished illegally, it will send a strong message to morally bereft property developers throughout the U.K. that attempting to subvert the system for profit is counter productive..

Although another guy in the post above yours is bemoaning that we can't rebuild it and shouldn't because it would be just a fairground attraction, the principle should be the goal: we don't destroy historical buildings without the proper channels. The pub did cost a lot to maintain but the people buying it should know that and shouldn't have demolished it without the permissions and, for them to not see what happen in the The Carlton Tavern case, is already a warning that the are likely to lose legally and, yes, I believe it should be rebuild "brick by brick" as a legal deterrent and a reminder that, for what we stand for in the world, we preserve our history as best as we can.

I had no idea this occurred! My folks went there a when they were last back in the UK. A sad loss to the community, as are all structures from history that either succumb through time, or torment! IF, it was done without permission, and more than likely, an 'accidental' fire, then the owners should be prosecuted. As for rebuilding it on 'private' land, well that is another issue. But the owners, most likely either a corporation or developer, should be heavily scrutinized. I just came across another video before posting, and I was right, it was bought by a real estate business, which also owns land adjoining. Intentional act, in order to build a housing estate and make millions! There is precedent for rebuilding historical buildings, as it has been done for many years, such as at Avoncroft Museum, just outside my old hometown of Bromsgrove, Worcs. I admit, the 'replication' will be immensely difficult, and expensive(as these kind of building are 'demolished' in a planned process, which is why the owners/perpetrators should be burdened with the expense. There have been many cases like this in the past, in order to 'bypass' regulations, including my hometown of Adelaide, South Australia, when many years ago, the old ABC 'heritage' listed building was 'accidentally' hit with a crane and wrecking ball, to the extent that the building was made unsafe, and had to be demolished, and no actions were taken to prosecute anyone. It is sad enough just to see old pubs shut down, and if not turned into houses, demolished after many years of falling into disrepair. But ones so iconic, to be a tourist attraction, well the Council and Government should be more protective at the start.

Unlikely, the Planning Inspectorate forced the developers to foot the bill in the The Carlton Tavern case. James Watson, the Campaign for Pubs protection advisor, thought the developers would get a slap on the wrist and a 6k fine but the developers had to appeal because they knew it would cost them (not the taxpayer) to redevelop it all back to what it was. It's been rebuilt now since the ruling in 2015. (Plenty of sources online).

Actually, it's not "current" technology, The Carlton Tavern in Maida Vale was rebuilt brick by brick because Historic England were thinking of listing it so they took photos and plaster casts (this happened before the demolition) since there wasn't any media or photos that existed to measure the significance of the place. Over the years, The Crooked House has been in news slots, wedding photos, tourist photos, probably Google maps and probably at least a couple of documentaries from TV (if not, maybe on someone's VHS) and (hopefully) some home videos. Combine that and the living accounts of the people who have worked there, the "technology" is actually the memories that we treasure.

@@timg1246yes I hear what you are saying. I don't know if the locals were aware of the pub being sold, and if so were they able to club together to buy it back for the community, as this has been successful in keeping pubs open. There is a bigger picture of the takeover of classically culturally British buildings such as pubs and churches by a particular culture in reference to restaurants. I've never seen a pub or church turned into a Chinese restaurant or a Gurdwara. I was pointing out a pattern in Britain that its culture is being hollowed out and changing beyond recognition. Also it appears to be 'hate speech' or biggotted to notice the demise.

@simonmuhamed1071 Sikhs make up less than 1% of the population. Therefore they are less likely to buy anything than a larger religious group. If people stop going to pubs or churches, that is not the fault of whoever buys the redundant building. This stuff about 'the local community' buying pubs is, generally, nonsense. It is the local community who never went in the first place.

Energy support is only a sticking plaster. Instability in gas prices are here to stay as governments continue to support the closure of other forms of reliable energy sources (Germany just closed 3 remaining nuclear power plants and UK government has failed to give long term support to coal back-up power generation). This leaves us dependant on ever increasing volumes of unreliable sources of electricity generation and consequentially an increasing reliance on back-up gas to keep the lights on. Sunack is mostly gesture signaling by agreeing to 100 more licences for North Sea oil and gas exploration whilst keeping in place the 70% windfall tax on the same companies. If he were serious about encouraging UK energy security he would have removed the windfall tax at the same time. He would also support maintaining several coal-powered power stations to spread the risk and he would support fracking. The Conservative government energy policies have left us ever more dependant on imported electricity and gas and their punitive taxation and electricity generation pricing agreements have resulted in UK citizens paying 10X more for electricity than the Chinese do. Our electricity is now probably the most expensive in the world and we actually now pay more than the Germans do. As we become more and more dependant on unreliables, the costs will continue to rise along with the inevitable instability that will follow sooner or later. This was all entirely predictable. A government funded study in 2019 predicted our electricity would end up costing 3 to 4 X what it did in 2018 and that was BEFORE the totally predictable Ukraine crises. This government have swopped reliable, affordable energy with the unaffordables that are part of their "green dream".
@vylbird8014
@vylbird8014 11 ай бұрын
I think you're a bit behind - those 'green dream' energy sources are really competative on price now. They cost a lot to build, but once built the upkeep costs are minimal. Solar needs no further support beyond sending someone to wash the bird crap off every year or so, and wind turbines just need an annual visit from the engineer to inspect the mechanics and change the lubricating oil.

What is the point in rebuilding The Crooked House in its original location? One of the reasons why it was sold by Marstons was because it was in a remote location, in the middle of a landfill, vulnerable to burglary (it was burgled and ransacked about a month before it sold), to get to it involved driving down a rutted track, past rubbish stacked in lay-bys- there was a reason why the pub was failing…….why not make the ‘owners’ re-build it closer to the centre of a community, so at least it has a chance at surviving as a going concern!
