First fire of the new dryer | Vlog 43
The day finally came, and we fired up the new corn dryer. A few very small issues but after they got sorted out everything work awesome. It's easy to get started and was pretty simple to set and get the moisture dialed in. Now that we got the first startup out of the way it's time to hammer down and get corn harvested and dried.

Was looking forward to the start up of the dryer. Very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to show the process and start up. Didn't really know about any systems besides batch and continuous flow dryers. We have too many other things to do to worry about corn yet. So I'll have to watch you enjoying it for now, but it is my favorite thing to combine!

Farming might have gotten easier on the physical side but you just demonstrated the mental side has greatly increased. It's good that you posted this video i don't think many people really know how challenging a job farming can be and what it takes to put food on the table. Be careful familiarity breeds contempt something i always remind myself you do the job all the time and you forget the dangers. Climbing that leg when it's wet can get interesting I'm guessing the boss is gone and the kids are to if you slip how long till someone checks on you. Working in a factory there's a buddy system farmers often do dangerous jobs on there own. Not far from me a guy did fall from a leg at night fortunately a hired man stopped to check and even though it was dark he was found but it took a long time to heal. Be safe and take care

I was wondering why you were using a generator to power the dryer. I see the response below about needing 3 phase power and the cost to get it to your farm.
@davekoster7951

Nice setup! An elevator near me used a generator that had an engine that ran on natural gas. It used the heat from the generator engine to preheat the air going into the dryer. Not sure if it just used the heat off the radiator or the exhaust went in too. Your system is diesel and I imagine diesel smelling corn would not be good. Not sure if it is still in use as that was years ago. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
@MarkBrock
@MarkBrock 4 жыл бұрын
There is a local elevator doing the same here. Poor planning on my part as the generator is located too far from the dryer to be useful for extra heat. The generator I have is an old combine motor and was pretty reasonably priced. If we have enough natural gas supply we'll likely switch to a NG generator.

The ducts are not insulated. I wonder about that but was told that it has little impact on heat loss. Think it has something to do with high air velocity with the fans.

The size of motors and the need for 3 phase power made a generator the cheapest option.

How big is your new dryer and how much can you dry in an hour and one other question are you still using the super b dryer or no
@MarkBrock
@MarkBrock 4 жыл бұрын
The bin is 30ft in diameter and it 11 ring high (I believe each ring is 44"). As for bushel per hour, it's likely 500ish at 33% moisture. As for the Super B, it's now for sale knowing we have no issue's with the new top dry. I'm always one to have a plan B till I know things are going to work. The gas company was worried about gas supply and pressure so I wasn't going to sell it till I know the new one was going to work properly.

Mark , how many bushels of corn can you dry per hour with your new setup ?
@MarkBrock

With the higher moisture corn, we're likely drying about 500 to 600bu per hour. This is roughly double to triple our old drying capacity.

Normally yes, but likely run some dry corn through again to get it all dried as it's pretty wet to leave up there and our current weather forecast doesn't have us in the fields again for a while.

Why do you use a generator instead of utility co electricity?
@MarkBrock
@MarkBrock 4 жыл бұрын
Utility priced bring 3 phase power to our farm and it was going to cost the price of a small country. As a result, the generator was the cheap way to get power.
@valtur25
@valtur25 4 жыл бұрын
natural gas is always cheaper option to dry corn, but then it has no use in cold storage on farms - it's better to get small wind turbine (200-500kW) and few hundreds of solar panels to run it off-grid with option to sell excessive energy production

@eriklorenz1960

Mark Brock It’s ridiculous what they charge to bring in three phase. We ended up going with 480 volt single phase and using oversized variable drives to make the third leg of power. It was a headache but worked. One estimate was $125,000 to bring it a mile.
