Crazy thrashing of EMD GT22HW (HŽ 2044 029) as it struggles to get the train moving uphill

Heavy snow, a heavy passenger train, frozen sanders and an uphill grade may have been too much for this unit. Some carriages' brakes might have remained engaged too. Whatever it was, this unit had a hard time climbing uphill after leaving Varaždin towards Zagreb, Croatia resulting in the most amazing thrashing experience.
I did not expect that I will be recording anything on this trip, but hearing the loco thrashing while the train was not moving had to be recorded. I recorded this to the best of my ability in spite of the freezing cold, heavy snow (it is falling heavily, but you can't see it all the time because of the video quality) and ice dropping of the carriage's roof.
After crossing the uphill part of the route, the train picked up speed and we have arrived to the destination, albeit 2 hour late. 😄

considering tracks were full of snow , frozen sanders,outside wheater and massive wheel slip i thing THIS LOCO MADE A VERY GOOD JOB.........and dont worry about engine , these are industrial type they can run at full power until empty tanks........massive respect to engineers who create that engine.

Despite the looks, this is primarily a passenger locomotive. It's just that the railway company decided to paint it to look like all other diesel engines. If this were a freight engine, there would hardly be any slipping. This engine has 6 axles, but only 4 have traction motors on them. Freight engines have all 6 axles with traction motors and are heavier.

well your statement is only partly true. The distinction in EMD locomotives used for passenger service is the steam boiler system in the rear of the locomotive used to provide hot steam or water to the passenger cars to heat them. Additionally, freight and passenger locomotives have the same anti slip measures whether they be sanding equipment, or wheel slip monitoring sensors.

Locomotive is an EMD GT22HW-2 2,330 hp (1,740 kW) A1A-A1A (6 axles, 4 powered). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_GT22HW-2 Beautiful EMD 645 turbocharged sound running wide open. Thank you for sharing. I think I might like to be buried in that cemetery at 15:08, when my time comes. ;-)

These locomotives have the 12-645 E3, which is a turbocharged version.

@@rearspeaker6364 Nope. This is the turbo version with 1 stack. Croatia doesen’t have any root blown 12-645, only 16-645 but those are on freight engines. Also you can hear the turbo.

and most of them have no idea as to how engines are configured for freight or passenger service. Most all of the comments by the poster are incorrect, as well as many of the posters. Lots of very incorrect statements and assumptions.

despite the adverse circumstances a great video and very rare indeed. I have often observed that they sometimes had up to three such locomotives even in summer. With the bad weather only one? funny!

Ooo now these look very familiar, we use G18 (blown 8 and 12-645) and G22 EMD's here in New Zealand, our DC and DFT class respectively, the DFT class would be no different to what you run there, turbocharged 12-645 EMD. The old girl is trying damn hard to get up the hill too. Pretty curious as to why he is running long hood lead, unless he couldn't find a Y-section to turn around. EDIT: after reading a comment below, our G18s are A1A-A1A while the G22s are CoCo, very interesting how they look very similar yet have quite a big difference in drive.

One more engine would have helped, or a bigger heavier one. Snow is beautiful and scenery is nice. Love the engine sound of the big EMD.

I haven't found out yet. It wasn't slipping. We thought that carriages' brakes may have been engaged, but that was not the case. The train was definitely not too heavy, because this unit hauled even more carriages up this grade with no problem.

Wheel slipping is not good for the rails! After this, one should expect quite a few wheel-burns on the rail-heads. Given that this is a low-traffic line and that the snow fall rate is low, a better way would have been to get a radio clearance from the dispatcher (by radio) for uncoupling the engine on the flat at the foot of the grade (after applying the manual hand brakes to the cars) and running "light" to the top of the grade and back to re-couple to the train. Then re-pressurize and release all the hand brakes. This would have clear the rail-head from accumulated snow that turns to water and "lubricate" the rails when there is wheel-slip of the engine. The uphill move then would have been much easier on the equipment. 2017/07/15.

I saw a rail with a groove deep by 3 inch.The loco slips a lot,,and a few minutes after a lot of sparks go out the rail. Obviously the rail was replaced.

Smoke like that on an EMD is normally caused by plugged air filters or bad injectors. When tuned up right they rarely make any smoke, due to the instant response of the geared turbo-supercharger

Well, one thing is for sure, tracks wouldn't be heated up or left bare since carriages use disk brakes and there is too much snow around them. Two times the train had a good speed before reaching an uphill grade and then lost it quite fast. The only real problem here was the fact that sanding didn't work (pipes for sand were frozen) and engineer had trouble with wheels slipping. If sanding was working, all of this would not have happened at all.

Traction isn't the only problem you have to worry about, the electrical traction motor can overheat, especially when going slow.

to the post that said, whats a freight locomotive doing with a passenger train? this is an export emd, it is multipurpose, engine, it is a gt22-L,this kind of locomotive was sold over the world, for fright and passenger duties,if this train would be a freigt instead of a passenger, the over sleep trouble would be worst

you're mistaken, this locomotive is one of the most reliable locos croatian railways have. it has proved its value over 30 years. this is the first video i've seen that this locomotive has problems (and i've seen plenty and i've ridden plenty of trains that this loco hauled).

Ivane, nisi bio tamo i nisi vidio uvjete. Nije mogla uhvatiti grip kad je ispred sebe gurala hrpetinu snijega i tračnice su bile mokre. Ne možeš učiti strojovođu kako da vozi vlak. Ovo je očito jedini način na koji je mogla ići u brdo. Strojovođa je mogao i odustati pa vratiti vlak u Turčin, ali nije, izvukao ga je, a lokomotiva je to sve odradila bez kvara.

A lack of good traction, weight of the train and weight of the snow in front of the locomotive were all together causes of this. :)

ok, so, those are 3 examples :-) and yet, every single day there are 30 locos of the series constantly running. also, those examples are on the Lika line, Zagreb - Split. on that particular line, locos of these series do not usually run. they are usually seen on Zagreb - Varazdin line and on Varazdin - Osijek line. these lines are more adapt to this locomotive, since they don't have huge climbs (like the Lika line).

23rd June: 2044030 failed at Lovinac on 523. 18th June: 2044022 shut down three times on 522. 26th January: 2044012 failed at Perkovic; trains 5502/5503 bus - no loco available. 27th January: trains 521/522 bus vice 2044 due to multiple failures. Just the impression I get from a few minutes searching various groups.

Just going by the reports in "European Rail Gen" Yahoo Group over the last few months, which detail quite a few failures and bustitutions. I have been to Croatia but spent time around Zagreb and Rijeka so had a few 2044s and 2062s, but only in the summer!

Would have helped to run a plow extra(standard practice on a lot of railroads) so the engine-mounted plow didn't have so much snow to deal with? Or double-head the train? Just some thoughts - don't know operating practices on that road but it would seem logical...cut down on not meeting the timetable.

+ShastaPacificRoad The real culprit for the situation in the video is the sanders being frozen on the loco. Otherwise it wouldn't have had a lot of issue going up there, the snow would be slowing it down a bit, but not as much. That's why this clip is maybe the only occasion something like this had happened. Maybe if the engine had Co'Co' bogies it wouldn't have this issue either. It has A1A A1A.

If they ran a locomotive ahead of the passenger train to clear the snow it might have made the trip easier for the passenger train. Fresh snow, heavy train and, sticking brake rigging makes a long work day longer.
