Tamiya fans have eagerly been awaiting a new off-road trail truck style of vehicle from Tamiya. The CC-01 has been serving many Tamiya drivers as an off-road type of rig, but it has its limits for off-roading. Tamiya set out to redesign the CC platform to fit in line with what many RC drivers gravitate towards. A full ladder frame chassis, solid axles front and rear and link style suspension. Tamiya has delivered the new CC-02 with these features. This new truck looks exciting and it still fits the fleet of scale bodies Tamiya already offers. Are you a Tamiya fan looking to expand on your scale adventures? We got into full detail on this new chassis, show you it in multiple off-road situations and give you our performance thoughts in this complete Tamiya CC-02 review!

I love it because it’s Tamiya! Of course it won’t compete with an SCX or other mainstream crawler, but I buy Tamiya for the Tamiya experience, makes me feel like a kid again 🥰 For years we wanted a solid axle on the CC chassis. Body is nice but I am going to hold off until they release it with the FJ or Bronco body.

I love watching your videos. You do the best job at giving a complete overview and running video. It's great how you go the extra mile by even disassembling RTR's to show how they work. I'm really impressed with this new chassis. It seems to handle a lot better than the CC01 did. Keep making great videos.

Cool review & you're lucky to have it so soon! But Tamiya is Tamiya... They do it their own way... Now, they entered in the 21st century, but they're still 2 decades late, instead of 3... They are pricey, they still lack some basic parts, like the bearings, and they are good to complicate a few things that are so simple... But like I said, Tamiya is Tamiya! They are fun to build, cool to look at, and they have a lot of models! I will buy it for sure, just for the pleasure of building a kit on a rainy weekend...

@ExperienceRC 4 жыл бұрын
When you compare this to pretty much all other crawlers on the market, I feel that this is disappointing. For the price point it’s now facing a lot of competition unlike the CC-01 does. It will be interesting to see how Tamiya as a company holds up in the future, as from my experience most Tamiya fans are from the older generation, and once that generation moves on from the hobby they may lose their market. I’ve tried so hard to justify a few of their purchases, and other than the Grand Hauler I never seem to be able to go ahead with them, as they just don’t seem up to it compared with what else is available. It looks great but sadly it won’t be on my Christmas list. Great in-depth review as usual buddy, this is the reason you’re my favourite RC reviewer. Thanks for a great upload.

I fully agree with you. Plus n ou t to mention they're usually a little more than some companies rigs. I think tamiya needs to stop all the re releases and actually do some R&D to what the scene is and come out with something that will give other companies a run for there money but also make the price point competitive

@HarmanMotorWorks
@HarmanMotorWorks 2 жыл бұрын
The moment you said "crawlers", I knew you misunderstood what this whole vehicle (actually the whole CC line of chassis) is all about. The CC chassis trucks are NOT crawlers, they are made for scale driving. Scale trail driving. That's it. "CC" stands for "Cross Country". If you took a real-world Mercedes Benz G500 fresh off the lot and onto a bunch of giant rocks and huge overhangs, do you think you'd get good results? No. And it's the same here. These are not intended to compete/compare against "crawlers". I for one am glad that Tamiya are releasing scale 4x4 vehicles such as this. It's such a breath of fresh from all the "crawling" that's overtaken the industry. Sure, there's clearly a (big) market for that, and those who like it can obviously enjoy it, but what really gets me is ppl who come along and paint scale, realistic, 4x4 chassis vehicles such as these with the 'crawler' brush and when they invariably don't hit the mark in that regard, proceed to denigrate the models. Maybe I'm showing my age here - and yes I am from a slightly older generation (Gen Y) - but I think this truck and this chassis, is the bee's knees. It's the perfect complement to a CC-01 which has an IFS and solid axle combo, and I can't wait to see what other bodies Tamiya produce for it. I do agree with your point around pricing and sure Tamiya is leaning on their brand name in that regard, but then again, how many other scale 4x4 vehicles are out there right now, that actually offer unlocked diffs (excluding the TRX-4 with all its portal axle madness and some of the Heng Guan models from China)? Dare I say RC4WD are doing well with their scale trucks, but even they don't offer a proper scale axle with an actual differential. They are all just setup for 'crawling'...such a shame in my book, as the RC4WD models look very scale and realistic otherwise. Anyways, my 0.02 (and some spare change lol).

@HarmanMotorWorks If you want realistic scale trail driving, there are still better options out there like the mercury chassis. Or just remove the portal axles from the trx4 and install smaller tires. Tamiyas are overpriced garbage.

A very thorough and fair review; thanks! One thing I would point out is that these cost a LOT less than an SCX-10 or TRX-4; that has to be taken into consideration when discussing the downsides compared to them. At the time of this writing, SCX-10 and TRX-4 kits are $370 and $390. This is $250. For that difference in money, we can buy the bearings that should have been included to begin with, a set of tires, and cheap radio system. (like a Traxxas TQi that has been stripped off of a new RTR in favor of your fancy Futaba, hehehe) It blows my mind that Tamiya includes motor & ESC, but not bearings.

It's ok...bushings are a bummer. Would have like to see some sealed bearings. Like it just seems like you pay alot for Tamyia kits, and you don't get much for what you pay for. Bushings, plastic everything, cheap esc, and it's not just the CC-02. It's every kit. I used to like Tamyia, bit it seems like they're stuck in the 80s and 90s.

Hi there, this is a very interesting review and it made me buy this car. After watching the video I followed your advice about lower gear setting and softer tires. For the ESC I chose a Crawler unit from Carson. The Battery Holder was modified to hold the battery in the center. But I am quite surprised buy the sound of the car! It sounds like jet engine almost. It seems the the propeller shafts produce a thorough rotating noise that‘s giving that high pitch noise. Would appreciate any experience/comment/advice from you or the community. Very nice videos and of high quality! Great job

I don't own one but the CC01 I believe has the same tyres. I cut the tread blocks on the inside 3rd of the tyre essentially creating an asymmetric tyre which looks stock on the outside but has a bit of open tread for the softer stuff. The guy who owns it has a lot of tamiya fan friends and I have now cut a full M/T set too. I how ever shall stick to my mardave.

Great review Greg, as usual. I have just recently purchased a CC-01 Land Rover and I wasn’t as happy with it as I first expected I would be, although now I am warming to it. Can you please recommend some after market wheels and tyres? I agree with you that the tyres that come with the CC02 and CC01 are just street driving. By the way, I haven’t even tried locking the diffs, just a bit unsure about it.

1.55 beadlocks, and RC4WD (I have Baja mtz's on one of my CC01's) makes some smaller tires that fit the tamiya CC series well. Try to find a Yeah Racing steering rack. And maybe a rear link kit. The 01 wasn't perfect but with the right upgrades it's a fun trail runner 👍🏻

I want to love it and I want to hate it at the same time. I love the size and I love Tamiya's selection of bodies. But at the same time it's Tamiya just not understanding the hobby anymore. That not understanding can come up with some really cool stuff when they come up with something wacky and out of left field like the mini Lunchbox, the comical buggies or the Dynahead 6x6 you have on the wall behind you. But when they try to make a more traditional style truck like this they over complicate things, get it 80% of the way and then just fall short. No skid plate, the transmission case protruding below the chassis rails. The lower link mounts protruding down low with the transmission case. I'm not surprised you gave up on any crawling, you must have gotten hung up every two feet on everything hanging down off the bottom. It's like they took the High Lift/Bruiser and said 'What are all the outdated, bad design elements of this old truck that keep it from being a serious crawler and lets re use those'. And the sad thing is, all they really had to do is add a skid plate under the transmission case and link mounts to smooth out the bottom. Hopefully that is something the aftermarket can come up with. It shouldn't be hard with all the talented 3d modelers out there and the quality of 3d printing these days. The only trick will be getting anyone in the scale world to care enough to bother.

Hey Greg I hope this is not a silly question, but I notice that on every RC review you connect the battery plug to the ESC plug only on one side of the plug (usually on Tamiya and EC5 plugs). You know in real life on the G-Wagon you have 3 locking differentials it locks in the center too.
@HarmanMotorWorks

To be technical, this kit already has a locked centre; most RC 4x4 vehicles do lol (haven't seen any RC models with an unlocked centre thus far)

@@HarmanMotorWorks then people should say that this thing has three differentials.
@HarmanMotorWorks

@@bradkalman2353 It technically doesn't have three differentials though. Just two. And it has a 'locked centre' (shaft). Basically the same as a part-time 4x4 system in a real vehicle. Looks like the only way one can simulate a 3-diff scale vehicle around this size is to build a Lego model...(the Lego Defender 42110 has three actual diffs for example)

I have been building Tamiya models for years and I have been building and driving radio control cars, trucks and planes for years. Tamiyas are models. If you want to drive get a real RC. This kit needs a cheaper version with no electronics because it can only ever be a shelf queen. More body detail to play with and maybe a hard body for modeling detail. It is trying to be a cross over between a detail model and a RC but it is neither. Pass. I liked the old Tamiya models with so much detail that you had actual ignition wires and after the time and effort involved you wouldn't dream of driving it in the rocks. Or dirt.

@@rcdriver true, here in the uk it will be expensive. and to me its not sure what it wants to be. as you say, no crawler so an expensive trail truck. much better, cheaper options available. I love Tamiya rc, have a house full, but this needed to be at least an scx 10 rival in my eyes

By the time you add ball bearings you're nearly in TRX-4 sport kit territory, plus with the TRX-4 you get metal links, aluminum shocks, portals, all metal gears, sealed ball bearings...The CC-01 is 75-100 dollars overpriced IMO.

Crawl, Crawl, Crawl! Why do you have to make almost every vehicle you test into a crawler? I know I have said this before but you continue to do it almost every time! I am amazed that you didn't try to make the Traxxas GT, as seen behind you, a Damned rock crawler! You seriously need to change the name of your channel to " RC Rock Crawler Review"! However I know that you won't because that would Seriously Reduce the amount of Free Shit that the manufacturers Dump on you!

You have to use a hair dryer to warm them up and then press them down. The heat activates the adhesive, they contour better too when warmed up.

Typical Tamiya. Still using Phillips head hardware, same hard tires, same crap-tastic plastic shocks, and over complicated links. Tamiya should just make bodies and on road cars.
