What is tent stitch and why do you use it? It's not quite cross stitch, and not quite needlepoint, but can make stitching large projects on high-count fabric so much easier.

Hey there! This video presents ideas and methods intended to help new and experienced stitchers find new methods of doing their craft. There is no right or wrong way to be creative or make art. If this works for you, I'm glad it helped! If you have questions, please ask! If you don't like this method, please move on. These comments are not a place to tell others what the "correct" way may or may not be.

Milesy! I've watched about a dozen videos on tent stitch and yours is by far THE BEST AND MOST HELPFUL. The only thing that would have made it better is if you had somehow sent me a telepathic message a year ago when I first started figuring this out OR a month ago when I decided to try again and told me to watch this video. Oh and also, I had given up on the loop start, but watching you do it in this video has got me thinking I can do it. I'm gonna watch your loop start video, but I already feel like I have a head start on it.....hee hee hee

Half stitch and tent stitch are stitched differently so they're effectively two types of stitches. 😊

Wow!!! I never thought about the hole you use causes you he thread to pull one way or the other! I came to try to find out what 10th stitching was, and I learned something else that is really helpful! Thank you!

Thank you Milesy My Stitches have gotten a lot more even since you showed me this thing about how the thread gets pulled in different ways. I hadn’t realized it would make such a difference. All your videos are very helpful. You are a great teacher! So thanks, and be well.

Thank you for taking the time to film and explain the tent stitch! It was clear and straightforward, and I ‘m especially grateful for your explanation at the end about stitching technique re: different counts of fabric and keeping the floss under a tension that maintains its 45 degree angle. Totally new concept to me, and something I’ll be paying more attention to :) My project right now is a huge full coverage piece, and I was curious how tent stitches worked. Thanks again!

Thank you! Not only learned how to tent stitch, but why to stitch in the way that you should do it. I am going to tent stitching on a full coverage piece that I am starting in January. I also love the way you do a loop start from the front... I always turned my project upside down to start my loop from the back and your method is so much simpler! ❤️

It takes a lot of getting used to, but eventually you do reach a point where you start to find a good tension and stick with it.

Better to see and understand them some of the others I’ve watched, glad to learn about using more thread I’m working on 11 count aida from a kit with three strands it isn’t covering well do I need to use more strands than they say and could it be done in tent Stich or is 11count Aida to big?

Sorry I missed this comment. Things get buried by KZfaq and shoved in weird places sometimes. But yes, you need more strands for tent stitch. I typically recommend using twice as many as you would for a full stitch for good coverage.

Hi Milesy--I have a question about tent stitching...I have started my first full coverage piece (4500 stitches of 213,600 currently done in the top left corner, completed in full cross)...I would like to now switch to tent stitch. I've been doing full cross, 2 strands on 18 count...can I switch now to tent and if so, would you suggest I do 3 strands of floss? Thanks so much!

Thanks for this. I assume using this stitch on a project on which some ordinary cross stich has already been done would be too noticeable? Or is that a stupid question?! Thanks.

Sorry I missed this comment. Things get buried by KZfaq and shoved in weird places sometimes. I tend to use it on 22ct, because after that you start needing more strands for good coverage. I did tent on 14 count once, and needed six strands to make it look nice. Never again.

I'd like to know if you're doing the stitches as a left hander or is it just personal preferences? Because I start my stitches going to the right first. I've been trying to figure this stitch for weeks though I've been doing needle point for more than 40 years. I absolutely love your loop knot. It's a clean start

Sorry I missed this comment. Things get buried by KZfaq and shoved in weird places sometimes. I stitch both right- and left-handed, depending on what I'm doing. I tend to stitch left-handed on my stand, and right-handed when I'm holding something in a hoop. I'll also switch up which hand I use on a stand if I need to get a better angle or something. Being ambidextrous is helpful like that!

Yeah, that's what I use. When you're working up close, you might think that there are coverage issues, but once you step away a few feet, it looks great.

What is the best way to keep your fabric from warping went you tent stitch a large piece? Im using 25 count evenweave
@MadXStitcher
@MadXStitcher 3 жыл бұрын
Practise maintaining good tension. Also, if you print out your patterns from PDFs, don't stitch all the way to the edge of the page. Try to do it in a zig-zag pattern, so the overlap isn't a straight line. If you're using a pattern reader, like Pattern Keeper or Markup, I tend to do cross country and go to the edge of a colour. You'll get rid of any straight lines that way. For 25ct, two strands is more than enough for solid coverage with tent.

Nope. The point of tent stitch is you do half the work so it goes twice as fast. It’s great for big HAEDs and such
