Yo! Welcome to my first video :) In this video you'll see my process of making Crossbill, a 3-layer reduction linocut print (aka suicide print) of a bird skeleton. I'll be talking about the relief printing technique, the tools I'm using, and the inspiration behind the print.
* I post a lot more behind-the-scene stuff on Instagram:
/ ttyr
* You can purchase this limited edition print on
gantian.art/shop-linocuts
I'm Tian Gan, a printmaker and graphic designer based in Stockholm, Sweden.

It's been ages since I have done a print myself but *this video must be one of the most professional lino printing vids on YT!* Bonus points for awesome drawing skills, the use of the Ternes-Burton system and for mentioning that being able to hone your tools is an essential skill when doing block printing! Also, I will add "peel porn" to my vocabulary... Addendum: extra points for using "real" ink (and not the lifeless water-based goop that people seem to like these days)! ... oh, and a solid carbide burr (the ones that are used for the clean-up of weld beads) works great in a rotary tool and can be cleaned with a fine steel brush w/o getting dull! You can also use a flexible axle... less strain on the wrists and easier to control...

Traditionally they are supposed to be limited As far as putting them in galleries, selling them in such manner, etc. Artist has to sign them with a # + how many ( 234/1000) or they aren't "Legalized" and its bad news. Have been issues/lawsuits etc. with artists who died and their kids or other relatives made "New" prints with stuff they found. Art teacher didn't tell us direct but said "Many artists just take a knife/saw across the Linoleum once done with the print run..." However, if you aren't a "Fine Artiste" who's uncle owns the local gallery and are a true "Outsider"/"Indie" and you carve them out to make a promo poster for your favorite (or better PAYING) goth punk band - well SAVE the thing. Leave blanks to fill in with like cut out computer print or different stamps so "Drakulaz Codpiece" can be across town this week, different prices, etc. and people collect different versions. Then when (IF) they get big instant batches of materials to print/have scanned for the record company. And the original will later be worth quite a bit to uber-fans of the band.

Brilliant design! But since you put so much effort into it, wouldn't it have been advisable to use different plates for each color so that you can reproduce? One mistake in the printing process and everything is lost! I'm also wondering whether the Dremel is helpful. You just use it to get rid of the background, is it possible to use it to actually carve lines? Really great print!
