CROSSBILLS with expert Matt Young & Spring Snowstorm Sax-Zim. Virtually Live 45 S4 E10

In this episode of Virtually Live from northern Minnesota's Sax-Zim Bog, Sparky goes out before the BIG SNOWSTORM and finds Hoary Redpolls and a Snowshoe Hare that runs up to greet him. Then after the storm that dumped 14" of snow on the Bog, he returns to see what he can find. We end up with an outing in search of Red Crossbills with national authority on winter finches, Matt Young of New York...and we find some!

Yep "Mares tails " I found huge droppings under the blackberry bushes with long leaped tracks in the snow hope its a snowshoe haven't seen one in years here in north of Medford Wisconsin April 2024 Had fun watching the flocks of Buffleheads antics on the lake while on their way north.

Thanks so much Pedro! If you let me know what your approximate budget is, maybe I could help. I guess that would have to be in US dollars though. At the low end, it would be the canon SX series which has amazing zoom capabilities with a fixed lens. I use the canon R5 with the canon 100 to 500 mm lens.

Well bugger. That is why I went there in February. AWD car with 3 peak rated tires. I coulda taken my truck instead! LOL

Sparky, can you share the make and model of the long boom microphone with the wind “muffle” that you use? I love recording bird songs/calls and share recordings with Cornell Lab of O. I just want to maximize the quality of my recordings.

Hi Scott, thanks for your question! I have been using an old Sennheiser MK-8070 18-inch shotgun mic that was donated to our organization. And then I run it via XLR into a Tascam DR-100 recorder. But I have also use Zoom recorders which I like maybe even better. But I may soon be switching to a parabolic reflector. The shotgun mic doesn’t reach as far as I’d like and doesn’t isolate individual birds as well as a parabola. Telinga is THE company…but pricey.
