Offered as a bonus in the I Can Do That! series, this short video shows how to make a simple cross-cutting jig for use with a circular saw. The jig allows for accurate, repeatable cross cuts with this very common power tool. Click here for more I Can Do That projects: www.popularwoodworking.com/ta...

I just noticed that you're using the Kreg drill bit as a drill bit & countersink, neat trick for shallow drilling!

Looks great! I would recommend that you add a second piece of "fence" on the right side of the saw, so that you won't be able to accidentally wander to the right when you slide it during a cut. That would make it more like a supercharged track saw :) Oh, and add some wax on the "track" pieces for smoother rides :)

Quick lesson I learned making this; watch the height of your guide rail. My Ryobi One+ has very little space between the motor housing and the rail. My first attempted failed abysmally with MDF scrap as the rail because it lifted the entire saw at an angle. Tomorrow I'm gonna try again by resetting the guide and using some 2mm ply for the guide rail.

I have the same saw, and while I like it, that lack of clearance is a problem. Even the foot of my speed square is too thick for it.

Being a average woodworker and having many pieces of equipment available I do see where I can use such a crosscut jig. I also help others working on their homes and can't move my equipment to their location so again it would be very useful. Great video and for those who nit pick on you about this or that get real and give it a rest and enjoy the video and relax.

Thank you, this was very helpful! I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. The crosscut jig will save me time and frustration when making perpendicular cuts. Without this jig configuration, the circular saw wanders enough to ruin many cuts - without a fence making freehand cuts. I can now cut with confidence knowing the circular saw is riding against the fence making the cuts square and uniform with the use of the sled. Keep making great videos. I am a subscriber with the notification bell set for any new projects that you may be uploading in the future. I would like to take the time to go through the videos and playlists that you have created. Unfortunately, I do not have the time today - I have a sled and a crosscut jig to build to help make my afternoon less difficult and stressful. I will be back to your channel to watch previous videos, thanks again. Oh, your videos are SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much more professional than other videos that I have watched. That is important to me and should be important to all who come to KZfaq for a quality learning experience. You have created a video that is edifying and to-the-point; without providing extraneous information that takes up my time and is not valuable to what I am looking to learn.

This is great, much easier than all those two rail saw track ones in other people's videos, yet still just as effective. I built one for a workbench project, and have been using it to great effect. The only problem I found was the side rails (to the workpiece sled) didn't stay completely vertical after fixing, probably due to the screws pulling the base of the rails in, or maybe the ply edges not being totally square. I changed the design to fit larger side rails to wide timber supports running below the ply, which keeps everything square. Anyway, many thanks as you've saved me having to buy a chop saw!

Perfect for small projects. Not got a lot of power so if the wood starts to flex it stops the saw pretty easy. Use it for small tasks and you will be happy. Safety system Works great kzfaq.infoUgkxjpBI8OOeUXib_iT7UomCrQ-uauwZJ62c .lose your grip on the saw it shuts off and the sheath closes over exposed saw.

I would recommend attaching a piece of 2x material to the ends of the saw track so when the saw is outside the cut tray, some unnoticed material get hit by the moving blade and is fired across the work area possibly injuring someone or damaging property.

This is exactly the jig I was looking for--one that will let me make the same exact cuts over and over. I live in an apartment, and everything needs to be something I can pack away. I probably won't make this until I actually need to use it, but it'll be really useful. If I need to make identical cuts on really long boards (like a 4.5-foot-high bookcase w/ two sides), I guess I can just make this longer, right? Or maybe clamp 2x4s to the side rails, and then clamp a stop to the 2x4? I'll have to figure tha tout.

For the fence, I'd attach it just a little farther from the edge. Then your first cut would cut the front and back rails and also cut the edge of the guide the perfect distance from the fence, with no worries that you get off a little in your fence measurement.

I wished I would have saw this before starting my floating shelf project. Would have made things a whole lot easier. I will probably make this guide before I start my second shelf. Looks like the cutting guide is limited to the size of material that will fit under the guide . I think when I make mine I will make it to fit a 2x4 underneath the guard just in case I ever need to cut 2x4s the same length.

Great video, and thanks for doing this. Just a little safety tip ... at 6:52, you placed your hand behind the saw, while the blade was still turning; if you had accidentally snagged the cord, or bumped the saw, it could have kicked or walked back onto your hand. Please keep your hand on the saw handle, until the blade stops turning. Some less informed folks may not see the danger in this.
@snoww2009
@snoww2009 5 жыл бұрын
Larry Wiseman Good comment on safety. I think this problem can probably be solved by not making the front overhang too long so the blade guard will retract once it past the overhang. The saw will have no place to rest. You will need to put the saw away, but it is safer.

@andreachinaglia5804
@andreachinaglia5804 4 жыл бұрын
it depends on the saw you have, on which is its dept of cut and on how wide the boards or panels you want to crosscut are. You should be able to make a quick project and dimension yourself the jig pieces once you figure out that data.
@thelowmein9143
@thelowmein9143 7 жыл бұрын
OK I have a thought hopefully I can explain it without sounding dumb. Instead of measuring with your saw base and marking with a pencil, you could just get a piece of wood that you KNOW is wider than your saw base, then get a known straight edge piece of wood. Attach your straight edge wood to the larger base, then just use the saw, pressed up against the straight edge to cut the excess off. then is exactly the right distance from the fence to the blade.

@talleysuehohlfeld3959
@talleysuehohlfeld3959 5 жыл бұрын
This is what I was going to suggest--marking the saw base w/ a pencil isn't going to get you an exact distance, but attaching the rail to a too-wide piece of wood, and then cutting it off, will do it perfectly.
@sunsande
@sunsande 4 жыл бұрын
But then you will have the problem to make the "straight edge peace of wood" exactly square to the base.

A bit, yes. Depending on your particular saw you may be able to use a thinner board, but you don't want the base plate slipping over the guide during a cut.
