Check out the lyrics. This is like the Vikings invading, “We come from the land of the ice and snow, with the midnight sun where the hot springs blow”. It was used in Thor, Ragnorok. It’s funny, I love Queen, and spent about a year listening to them intensely, and then picked up Led Zeppelin again, another year or so, mixed with other favorites. I’ve been listening to them for over 40 years and I still discover things I didn’t know or hear. I listen differently than I did as a kid. I enjoy it so much more. My kids and grandkids think I’m out of my mind.

Not sure about his father, but according to Wikipedia, Robert's mother is Romany (formerly known as Gypsy but now, is considered derogatory). From my time of studying flamenco, I was told that it is believed the Romany (Romans/Roma) originated in what is now Northern India and Afghanistan. From there, they believe some went Northwest landing and moving through the Slavic countries. Some went Southwest through the Middle East, Northern Africa, and finally, North into Spain (think flamenco singers). But they didn't stop there. They went on into Scandinavia and Great Britain. From England, many were sent to Australia because it was a penal colony, and to America as slaves because they were undesirables. Robert's voice contains this deep connection to the soulfulness of these cultures, with a British sensibility and a soulmate connection to the blues singers of America. It's a very special voice and a heady cocktail of influences! We are lucky the stars aligned for all of the members of Zep, and for us to experience what he/they had to give!

I thought she was a bit over the top, but things were different when she was young. She also believes one old woman put a curse on her, my brother believes it to 😁

Talk about an explosive song! You can feel the Viking horde rowing to shore to raid and plunder. And Plants war cry is just legendary. I think the title is probably a bit of a joke in that the Vikings were great hit and run artists and were not looking to hang out with the locals for long. They terrorized much of the European coastline a 1000 years or so ago. Thor Ragnarok and School of Rock featured this song too, amongst others. PS You better buy another cooling fan for your computer... because Zeppelin is fire.

They wrote this song when Led Zeppelin toured Iceland in 1970. John Paul Jones is the bassist who plays the bass right handed. During the breakout into the guitar solo, these guys were fucking LOUD!! Especially John Bonham on drums. Hammering away on a green Ludwig set with a 26" bass kick drum delivering the thunderous explosion of power that he was famous for.

Hi here's a short story you might enjoy Jimmy page was in the band yardbirds and he was doing a interview and the reporter bashed them so bad and told Jimmy that they would sink like a led zeppelin so Jimmy restarted the band and so hence the name of one of if not the greatest rock band of all time Ken D.

About the Vikings coming to N. America from Scandinavia. 'Valhalla, I am coming" is a reference to their Norse God.

It's about the Vikings invading England. Valhalla is not a Norse god but the place where Viking warriors who die in battle go to.

@@redpine8665 You can't be absolutely sure without asking the band but the band was English, most of the Viking raids were in Europe and England was badly affected. The Vikings took over a lot of it in the North, killed a lot of priests and won a lot of battles. I don't think the American arrival of the Vikings was that kind of event - more like explorers creating a settlement? I don't think there is a record of them fighting and battling with any natives in the America and there's no evidence that the settlement (at L'anse aux Meadows) was permanent is there? The lyrics of the song say 'we are your overlords' and 'in spite of all your losing' and refer to how peace can be achieved, and that's exactly what happened in England. Robert Plant said he wrote it after visiting Iceland. The description, in the song, of where the Vikings have come from fits Iceland. Vikings stayed and settled in England. York was their capital. Ivar the Boneless conquered York for the Vikings and Eric Bloodaxe was the last Viking King there. From Wikipedia 'After ascending the throne, Alfred (The Great) spent several years fighting Viking invasions. He won a decisive victory in the Battle of Edington in 878 and made an agreement with the Vikings, creating what was known as the Danelaw in the North of England. Alfred also oversaw the conversion of Viking leader Guthrum to Christianity. He defended his kingdom against the Viking attempt at conquest, becoming the dominant ruler in England.[1] Details of his life are described in a work by 9th-century Welsh scholar and bishop Asser.' Eric Bloodaxe died in battle in 954.

Zep played the Royal Albert Hall in 1970 & they're four guys in that audience...that were clearly inspired & influenced....... They formed a band!....Queen!

John Paul Jones, the bassist is a multi-instrumental musician. Jimmy Page is the GOAT of rock guitarists, for sure. All drummers acknowledge that John Bonham is just the best drummer ever. And Robert Plant has the swag and the voice to match. And they have the chemistry together that incomparable. Keep going. There are great recommendations in other comments.

Absolutely NOT live. Start with studio, to get the entirety of the song. The live versions leave things out (by necessity; they had no clones to go on stage with them and perform the additional-tracked parts).

I'm glad that guy had his camera that day or we would not have any live versions of this song. The studio version sadly doesn't include the instrumental part at the end. It's just an amazing way to end the song. That is the Zep attitude, right there.

One of your subscribers left you the lyrics.....The Vikings were terrifying raiders that pillaged and destroyed the coasts of northern England and Scotland around the 800-900 centuries. And then they stayed and settled, and became part of the mix of tribes that settled Britain. Their language influenced old English. That’s what the last lines of the song refer to...”rebuild all your ruins” etc. they came as raiders and destroyers and then stayed as settlers and farmers. Robert Plant wrote this song.....he is fascinated by the history of his homeland and is very knowledgeable about it.

So what little footage he had he had to get creative with it to match the live audio he did have. Thats why this version is all spliced together like this. He wasn't trying to be artsy. it was out of necessity.

The song is about the Vikings and their invasion of other European countries, probably England in this case. They come from Iceland in this case 'We come from the land of the ice and snow, of the midnight sun where the hot springs blow'. They say 'Valhalla I am coming' because it's the goal of every viking warrior to die in battle so he can go to Valhalla (the Norse equivalent of heaven, a pagan heaven). Their ships are being driven on by 'the hammer of the gods' a reference to the god 'Thor' who always carried a hammer. They are going to 'new land' particularly 'The western shore'. There they fight the inhabitants for land. However the last verse says that 'despite all your losing' there can be a negotiated peace and that's what happened eventually. The warriors and invaders became settlers and farmers. I think this song was inspired by Led Zeppelin's visit to Iceland.

I just stumbled across & found you. Glad I did, you give great insight to the (at least the ones I've seen) videos & songs. I was wondering if would & could do some AC/DC tunes to review & talk about. They have been my favorite band ever since I first heard them when I was 11 in 1980. You'll get a laugh out of this, I first heard AC/DC on my cousin's 8 track player. Yea I am that old, I'm 51 & my how the yrs have gone by but one thing will never change & that is all of this rock n roll that a lot of us found & grew up on will never & I mean never get old. Faith don't know if you listened to Greta Van Fleet before this, but their singer belts it out like Robert. People say Josh actually sounds likes Robert. That may be why those long notes in the beginning sound familiar.

When you do "Stairway to Heaven", do the studio version first, then do the Live version from "The song Remains the Same" from 1973! Just my opinion by the way. but I think you will enjoy it even more that way.

This Guitar-Solo wasn't perfect without the drummer - he was the only one (at that time) who was able to drum like a guitar made a melody! JOHN BONHAM Does you remember the MUPPETS and the ANIMAL at the drums? I think John was the Role Model for this... :o)

If there was a top 5 GOAT Bands Ever than yes Queen would definately be one of them somewhere in competition between 1 and 3 (: Me I kind of look at it as if Led Zep is one half of the unknown musical universe of creation and Pink Floyd the other half in the time travelling period or decade of the 1970s and all the stars and planet's are all the bands that came after (: But Queen is the huge gigantic Super Nova explosive star that just out of that universe and became it's own universe that gave birth too other stars and planet's or bands and other great musical acts (: Queen is Beyond Mind Blowing Amazingness Period (: But react too as well Pink Floyd that another world on too itself (: Trust me once you finish the Zep.
