Camping at the side of the road, the flies begin to annoy us. By breakfast time they are swarming. We enjoy our drive as we see road kill by the hundreds, and some live animals as well. We enter and overnight at Birdsville, where I get an eye infection. Lucky the flying doctor happens to be in town and I get the treatment I need to continue our trip. The episode ends crossing Australia’s tallest sand dune.

Try being a farmer and living with the March fly. Rain or no rain, flys are just part of the Australian landscape and go well with coffee, soup, sausages, or generally any meat.

The good thing about the fly net is one can drink through them! A fly deterrent that works really well is a cream of Rosemary and Cedarwood oils. My one is from Desert Dwellers. Light coloured and earthy coloured clothing tends to attract less flies also. And fly spray in the car. Other than the flies making you trip displeasing, another great video. Thank you, I look forward to the next episode.

When the flies are like that, a broad brimmed hat and those fly nets are really the only way to survive. We have had to endure conditions like that a few times so you have my heartfelt sympathy. Great the RFDS got you going after the eye infection. Great idea for your Aussie viewers to make a small donation to the RFDS, they operate mostly via donations and they are still a real life-line in the outback.

Those flies are unreal. Nasty. A tip for you Andrew, I've noticed that when wearing my sunglasses in my Jeep with the windows down or the top off, I always get a few things in my eye, flies, road grit, debris etc. My theory is that the sunglasses cause a pressure difference and it attracts things in from the side. When I wear the skii type goggles with the side protection, this no longer is an issue. Love your videos. Safe travels! From Vancouver Canada.

Like someone else said, you drove up the easy side and went down the easiest run too! It is by no means hard with many beaches in WA and NSW (when the Stockton big dunes used to be open) being more harder, but the other tracks on the side you went down get progressively harder especially when it is hot and the sand is soft. Seeing the flies, I'm glad we did our crossing last year at exactly this time of year - it was glorious and fly free :)

Hi Andrew, we did the simpson just b4 you I think, in mid April, the flys where so bad and it did kind of wreck it for us also but we will defiantly do it again, it was so much fun traveling the French line. Also just a side note I believe from the video even though you followed the sign that said "big red" that's the basic track that any 2 wheel drive vehicle could cross known as little red, about 2 k's further north is the real big red, if you turned around and looked east once over it's quite obvious where the serious track is that gives an amazing outlook over both sides of the dunes, also it's best viewed at dusk or dawn, we arrived from the west at sunset and it's absolutely breath taking, you will have to visit again when there are no flys and spend a whole day or 2 in the area to full appreciate it I think

Love your shows, although i have a unique reason for owning a landrover discovery 300tdi and that is i have a back condition and both the suspension and seat are comfortable for me. Also a well sorted 300tdi will do 9 litres/100km fully laden. Also you might want to mention the "madman" engine monitor, it is NOT cheap but it will monitor the whole engine and send an alarm if something is beyond a pre-set limit. Also so far done approximately 50,000km in the discovery (it has 540,000km already) and only thing broken is a shock absorber when i was on Fraser island, but the fantastic guys over there at land rover rentals got me new shockers by ferry the very next day :)

Trucks slow down as much as possible. That is, they do not brake up like for a camels or cows. It will simply be too expensive in emergency brakeing and too dangerous in relation to safety. But no truck driver wants to hurt their trucks. Kinguros can easily damage parts of the trucks, including the brakes. Nor do I think that most truck drivers like to hit animals. Just my view as Danske who lives in Sweden but loves Australia. I have been to Australia twice and will hopefully come back with my own home-designed VolToy (VolVo TGB 20 - Toyota 80 serise) Thank you for lovely pictures. Sincerely Henrik

Actually, Big Red is no where near the tallest sand dune in Australia! It's the tallest in the Simpson desert area but it's nothing compared to some of other dunes in Australia. Try "Callcup Hill" this sand dune is in south WA and is far taller and far more challenging to drive than than "Big Red". Big Red is not difficult to drive if you have half a clue... If you're coming from the west it has a few more challenging lines but these aren't too difficult if you select the correct tyre pressure and gear ratio... A lot of people stuff this up, I think this is why it has the reputation of being so large and difficult to get up. Love your work, Andrew, keep it up.

The drive of Big Red from the western side is the more challenging, up being more difficult than down. We did the Simpson crossing from west to east a few years ago in an HDJ79R, Utility with a piggyback camper on it, all up weight of the camper 600kg. I had to drive the dunes in high range because the gearing was tpp torquey in low range & it just dug in. 2nd high, to 3rd high, didn't get stuck once & towed a friend with a Pajero & camper trailer over lots of dunes. The turns at the top were contributing factors to his difficulties & the pock marks where others had spun wheels on their ascents.

You should have driven Big red in the other direction. There are three tracks going up, and the two left ones are the more difficult ones. You descended the chicken track on the right (left as you were travelling). I only drove up the chicken track with 12 PSI (yes, that low) and a 22r hilux, you need power to drive up the other tracks. I loved the video, brings back fond memories (we had less flies).

September (Birdsville cup). The downside is that it is very busy and lots of corrugations due to the traffic. The good thing about that period is that if you break down in the desert ($ 8000-10000 tow out) somebody is around to possibly help.

+blackhawk140 No matter which way you look at it, it's not really a big dune, so I also fail to see what all the fuss is about. Dune driving is awesome fun and you do need power - one area where automatic transmissions and gasoline (petrol) engines outshine the usual Diesel/manual setup. Can't provide the link, but it would be worthwhile to check out any "dune driving Namibia" video on KZfaq.

Gi guys, It was great the RFDS was there to help and the fact they were soooo cheap is fantastic, BUT I hope this doesn't sound bad but as you maybe aware the RFDS relies also on donations to keep their service running in a good manner so I hope you also donated towards their great continuation. I'm not talking hundreds but every minimal amount from everyone going into the outback helps. Just a thought. Cheers

Bad luck on the flies. Did the same run last year and literally counted about 10 for the entire Simpson run. Adversity comes in all shapes and sizes. Agree on the dune assessment. No.2 was way more challenging because of the rough terrain. Big red is just a straight up power burn really.

"Fly shucking" is a camping art form: You slowly walk up behind someone with a halo of flies, lean towards them slightly to decant your cloud into theirs, then take off running, leaving your cloud behind. They might not catch on until the fourth or fifth person shucks to them, at which point retribution is common and noisy.
