I go an adventure to cross Dartmoor from East to West... Or should I say 'Easter West'? No. But it is Easter weekend and I am following the trail of stone crosses laid by medieval monks. Let's go!

Risking it all on a bank holiday/Sunday service bus, such an adrenaline junky! Nice one for doing your homework and forming a route away from the Abbots Way. Missing Hutchinson's though? Room for improvement, see yourself after class. Enjoyed what I think was some new guitary tunes and did we spy a new pair of boots? Thanks so much for another brilliant vid. Hope that poor naughty Fox Tor pony didn't go the way of the youngling...

Haha! New guitar for this episode is a little Easter musical joke - 'I am the Resurrection' by the Stone Roses. Still annoyed I missed Hutchinson's!

Hey there George, as a fellow walker and camper, with the south east landscapes nearby, I've always loved walking, but always always found it to be such a mixture of feelings and emotions, excitement mixed with terror and such. When I have a trip planned and I'm very nervous about feeling for the most part, out of control of what will happen... I go to your videos for bravery! In your north to south and your wild camping videos you show your fear honestly, And I think it is very respectable! I would very much love to hear your thoughts and feelings on overcoming these fears towards camping. I.e being out of control, being at the mercy of the weather or local officials and landowners you may run into. Not many people talk about these aspects of walking, but just show the adventurous side of things. But I think it gives a false impression of the reality. And makes myself feel too weak to do it... for actually feeling the emotions. So if you please, it would be wonderful to hear your thoughts, thank you :)

Hello! Your comment has really got me thinking... Might be worth exploring in a full (not a) podcast! Here are my first thoughts: 1.) I try and reframe my fear as excitement - there's a fine line between the two, and a bit of fear is a sign that you're pushing yourself, learning about yourself, and developing in some way. 2.) I (perhaps naively) really trust myself - I back myself that I'd be able to cut my journey short and stagger to the nearest town if I really needed to. Something bad could happen and I could be scared, or hurt, or miserable, but I think I'd make it back alive and it may even become a good story to tell (I have a few!) 3.) The beauty, and excitement, and freedom of the experience makes it worth it anyway! But I'm sure you know that, as you're overcoming your own fears to get out there - you are brave! Thanks again for the comment - as I say, it's really got me thinking!

So that's cross-collecting to add to letterboxing/ tor-bagging on my Dartmoor list. Hopefully, a good few more 365 squares shaded green now, no thanks to Old Fatty.

Most people would think Dartmoor's just a big barren space, but you're right - when you start exploring you find so many different things to do. And you're right about the 365s, too - I must have some colouring in to do!

Another cracking informative video George. While watching it, I wondered how long it would take to find Goldsmiths Cross. I had the same experience and took a long time trying to locate it as it’s not obvious on the map. I eventually cheated and found the grid reference on Google, yes, I was lucky enough to get a signal, and then found it easily 😂 I love your videos, keep them coming 😊

Yes - it sort of blends into the landscape doesn't it, especially when you're bleary-eyed and half awake! I didn't fancy wandering into Foxtor Mire trying to find it. Big fan of your videos, too - I'm always keeping an eye out for you out there!

Good effort over two days, no wonder you looked knackered. That's a hard slog. I don't think Warren Cross is the original home of Moorshop cross. I think that comes from the place still named Moorshop locally, about a mile south. That would then lead you in an almost dead straight line from Walkhampton to Pixies Cross via Huckworthy Bridge. Huckworthy Cross I think has been moved a few hundred yards north of it's original position. I think that was probably the meeting point of two routes, the one you were on when going over Huckworthy Bridge and one going north taking in Sampford Spiney - Windy Post - Headlands Cross which is just below Cox Tor, and onward north. I wish you'd said you'd be in my home patch you could have stopped in for a brew, I live but 100 yards from the bus station.

Yes, if the way is in any way authentic, then the monks hadn't chosen the easiest route! And that makes a lot of sense about Moorshop - I think I just got a bit confused with my scribbly notes. Tavistock bus station on a Sunday afternoon was very serene - a nice spot!

I am really getting a sense of what Dartmoor looks like from your videos. Is it fair to say a lot of it is open and featureless? I have only made it that way once on an exercise and my friend got serious Hypothermia....in August!
@thedartmoorpodcast
@thedartmoorpodcast 3 ай бұрын
Hypothermia in August is a very Dartmoor thing to happen! Yeah, the middle is very barren and empty - like another planet in places, but there are some beautiful bits of pasture and forest, too, especially around the south and east.
