I found my first (& only) letterbox back in the 1970s. Guided by an ex Royal Marine who used to yomp 30 miles a day for fun. I stamped my ordanance survey map and still have it. I noticed Ed using his stick to probe. Wise man. Letterbox hiding places are also good adder hiding spots.

Yep - poking stick essential! Also useful for bog avoidance, and stabbing into the ground as a marker so you don't forget exactly where you found the box!

Another brilliant Video George. I’ve accidentally stumbled upon a few letter boxes and love to open them up and see what they contain. Finally stamping my map as my reward. I’ve just brought a letterboxing book.. glad this “isn’t a podcast”

Thanks very much! One thing I learnt on this adventure was that stumbling across one is all very nice... but it's finding the specific one you were looking for that gives the 'boxer a proper buzz. I'm going to be making an effort to find plenty this year.

Enjoyed the video. Watched it all the way through but am still totally clueless as to how this works. Think I may have found one years ago though. It was a plastic lunchbox jammed between some stones. I left it well alone.

Thank you! I think I explained the actual process a bit better in my first letterboxing video - it usually involves reading some clues from the catalogue and triangulating the position of the box using compass bearings. Pretty tricky. There are also lots of 'geocaches' up on the moor which are generally much easier to find and can be located with GPS coordinates. Usually, if you just stumble across one, it'll be a geocache.

Great video, though confused. Say your unable to go to a meet, but you go walk dartmoor, say Western Beacon. How would I know there is a box in area, and where then do I find clues. So, is there a book that gives rough location and then clues ?. Cheers, and really enjoyed. Ratboy was perfect companion for your day out.

Does anyone have any tips on suppliers of letterboxing paraphenalia? Am hoping/ assuming there must be some suppliers around the moor making personalised stamps...

Personally, I don't! But I'll contact the crew and see if they have any advice. I got my stamp off t'internet for a pretty reasonable price.

I must have come across dozens and dozens over the years, but it's never appealed to me. Each to their own, I'd never deride anyone for letterboxing. They are just doing what I love to do but with more purpose than my amblings, ramblings and musings.

This is kind of like golf for nerds. But instead of putting balls into holes in the ground, you're retrieving bolls* from holes in the ground. (I apologise for this forced play on words but it is what it is. I do have other meaningless tautologies if you prefer.)
