I recently signed up for Jamie Harrison's new course Crossing The Bridge that 'bridges the gap' between his free beginner course and his individual song tutorials. I will be playing through it in the coming weeks.

I'm in the middle of this course right now. Really love Jamie's lessons and frankly if I can master the material in this course I will be more than satisfied. Really appreciate you putting your experience out there! I've just subbed to your channel and really enjoying the videos as I find your experience and progress is quite close to mine. The cost of this course is comparable to 2-3 or 3 private lessons and given Covid and all that I think it's more than worth it. Looking forward to seeing where this takes you!

Glad to see I'm not the only one. As I mentioned before, I am a few years older, but about the same spot guitar-wise. I got Jamie's course; and am doing 'Slow Dancing'. I am just now past the intro and into the song. I'm not brave enough to record myself and I am not up to the bpm; but even I can hear it sounds like a robot is playing it. I think I was born without any rhythm or soul....it's very methodical playing; but I keep plugging away. I keep watching Jamie's video on KZfaq, some day, some day. Also like you, I need some more guitar gear.....oh where to spend my money..... Another great video. I wasn't aware this bridge series was there. Not sure if I should start it; or just keep at the Mayer song....
@MidlifeGuitar

He talks about that rhythm in this course, saying that much of the Hendrix, Mayer, Frusciante music has an almost lazy swing to it. I agree that it is difficult to grasp and why it feels that being able to play the song with any kind of feeling just doesn't seem possible at the moment. Like you say, keep at it! we will get there! others have done it so there is no reason we can't. GAS has definitely got a hold on me now 😂

Yes it is, for me anyway, but what really helps is the guy showing his progress over 60 days. He play through a few bars each day so you can see him do it and builds it up on the metronome. He gets it quicker than I do but it definitely helps.

Great content, just started watching in the past week or so. I feel like I'm in a similar position, between levels in skill. You mentioned the 100watt head. I think that's great and you probably won't regret it. Pedals can get crazy expensive. The route I took was going with the Fender GTX 100, comes with the pedal. The pedal has a built in looper, so you can use that and as you play over or dub over you can still switch amp models etc. I still could not get past the true tube sound and also have a Blackstar HT20R MKII combo. That is amazing as well. It's versa tile and takes pedals well, effects loop, recording options, great reverb, etc. Just some food for thought. I am really enjoying your channel so far, you have certainly earned another subscriber.

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for subscribing, I will take a look at the Fender as I didn't know it came with a pedal, thanks. I have just sold the Katana though and I am with you on the whole tube thing though so who knows what route I will take at this stage 😂,

Found your channel today. I wanted to do the same concept a few years ago when I started at 36 but lack the Hollywood looks and charisma so thought best not to put people thru that. I’ve found by far the best free or possibly even paid courses are on Your Guitar Academy, they have Hendrix,slash John Mayer etc style courses all for free. Caged major and minor. I personally wouldn’t tackle anything Hendrix style until I knew caged and the scales and arpeggios around the shapes. Makes it way easier. TrueFire is probably the best paid site there is, guitar tricks is great for beginners. Artist works is also great I’m currently having another go at Guthrie Trapps country course. Great channel. Subbed Btw I bought the Yamaha THR and have ordered the Spark. It’ll be here sometime in January. From the app and the size of the amp I think it’ll be great for beginner to intermediate or people looking to learn more songs

Thanks for the sub and the advice about the courses. I have checked YGA before and they have some great free courses, I also like how they have the interactive tabs on their site along with it and that setup is actually one of the best I have seen so far. The caged system is on the list, I wanted to tackle it after this course actually as I was aware of the relevance the relevance. Glad to have you along and would like to hear how you get on with the Yamaha and your thoughts vs the Spark 👍

Great job! I feel like we're in the same boat. I've been practicing new material, but it's way harder than what I'm used to. I think being uncomfortable is part of growing. I've also started taking lessons with a guitar teacher. I'm deciding if I like it, but it's going well so far. I will say having real time feedback is huge.

Yes, it is definitely 'growing pains'. Bits of what I am learning at the moment are getting easier, I use that word loosely 😂, so I am hoping it translates to other areas of my guitar playing. Nice!!! When I get a Strat I'm gonna have to check his courses out, I'm digging your progress! Yeah, I know the looper dilemma you are in right now. I bought the Dito from Guitar Center. It was supposedly used but I don't think it was, for $60 USD. BUT...yeah my Fender Mustang doesn't have an effects loop so it does kind of suck trying to do a lead tone. So what I do is for the rhythm use my neck pickup and mess with tone & volume. Then control how loud I want the Dito to output. Then go to bridge and crank the tone back up & the volume on the guitar. It works to an extent but not all the way.
@MidlifeGuitar
@MidlifeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
How are you going with the looper? I picked up the ditto one yesterday and had a quick go, couldn't get it looping very well. I need to watch a few videos about timing with it.
@nixternal
@nixternal 3 жыл бұрын
@@MidlifeGuitar I'm good with the looper. Well kind of, my time isn't always perfect. One thing I do is if I'm doing 12-bar, the last bar I will play going into the 1st bar when I hit the button to record. If you just hit the button then start playing there will an audible gap. Also, it is tricky trying to tap your left foot & then trying to tap at the right time. So now that I think about it, I lied with my opening statement. I'm not good with the looper :D I can work it, I can record multiple layers, but that doesn't mean it sounds good if you know what I mean :) Justin has a good Dito video I think.
@MidlifeGuitar
@MidlifeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
@@nixternal 😂😂 I haven't tried the layers yet, was just trying to get the timing right so it didn't sound like there as a noticeable audible gap but failed every time. Will watch Justin's video👍

@@MidlifeGuitar yeah, timing is 110% the thing you gotta get right. I will try to play through 1 round and at the end of that round right at the chord change I will start the recording. This usually gives me a decent result that you can work with.

@@MidlifeGuitar anytime. I run all my pedals through the front of my amps. But fx loops have their uses, especially for loopers, etc. Also, one thing to consider: if the blues jnr is your ‘dream amp’ then consider just saving for it and getting it later. Hi ya ... I’ve finished Justin’s ~Beginner and have independently worked on the 5 pentatonics, scales and a quite a few bits and am starting to feel a little plateaued, which of course is to be expected ... is this worth a go, or is there more I need to do first? Before you answer, remember you’re still on my missus hit list for the Spark 😂 cheers mate
@MidlifeGuitar
@MidlifeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
😂😂 I'll tread lightly then.. I would start by saying this is all about songs, thumb over chords and rhythm. If you have finished Justin's course then I would jump into Jamie's free beginner course and whiz through that but pay attention to any lesson on thumb chords. If you love this style of playing and quite a few of the songs listed in the course then go for it but bear in mind it doesn't deliver the content the same way as Justin's course. You have to keep watching the videos, slowing them down, moving to another one to keep the frustration away, and going back to work on them again. I really want to learn this style so I am committed to it but if you are looking for a course that offers a bit more / more diverse in teaching then this isn't it. You could supplement it with Justin's intermediate course though and that would be a good idea but it would just take a little longer 👍

I've got to say, Snow by the Chili Peppers is considered a very difficult song to play so I'm surprised it's in that course! Under the Bridge isn't too bad, one of my favourite songs to play actually. One wee tip, don't get too bogged down over the thumb over the top chords, only do it when it's easy for you. You can still play most if not all of their songs playing regular barre chords as guys like Jimi and John Mayer have HUGE hands. Check out a live version of John Mayer playing Neon on an acoustic guitar to see some weird thumb manoeuvres, insane. Another example of the thumb over the top not being too important is Under the Bridge. As I mentioned, it's a favourite of mine to play and I've got small fat sausages for fingers (HA!). I play how Marty Guitar plays it in his lesson if you want a reference for how to play without the thumb over the top. Anyway brilliant work as always my man. :)

@MidlifeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, I know I can play alternatives to the thumb over chords but I really want to learn them and think my fingers and thumb can do it 😂 . Time will tell how it goes but it is getting a little easier as the muscle memory kicks in.

Why don't you get Bias FX 2? Its cheaper than a katana 100. And then yiu can use the spark as the audio interface for it and also as the speaker. And a midi pedal board controller for bias fx. Or if thats too many things. Why not get something like Helix POD Go and just use the katana you have or the spark as the speaker.
