I can only say that Justin is one of the gooduns. He has dedicated years and years of his life to the guitar community and can never be accused of being a bread head. I seriously believe he should be knighted or something as he has surely given to society a lot more than many who have.

Let me explain something: I played guitar for 20 years. I had a blast making a racket somewhere in the house for an hour or 3 a week. I only knew enough to play the songs I played and every time I'd find a teacher to take me further, I went nowhere. I found a couple of guys on youtube that helped a little bit, but when I found Justin 2 years ago, I took off like a rocket. I actually understand the basics of theory as well as managing the fretbroad like I actually know what I'm doing! lol And I did it over the course of a few months with less than a dozen of the actual lessons. I went right for my trouble areas and it went so well I took a chance with the theory stuff. I've been absorbing and exploring not even 100% of what I've learned for the next 18 months and I'm still going! I am literally amazing myself every time I play. And I certainly never imagined playing lead, but I can and DO all the time now and my rhythm playing is now at a professional level because I know more than one way to play chords which allows for more interesting rhythm patterns. I just can't say enough about Justin. If he can teach an older guy who understood no one else, then I believe he can do that for anyone. I love Justin. I leave my subscription up just as a thank you. I can pay for the rest of my life and still feel like I got a discount because now I play more like 10hrs a week and never had more fun. Justin is the man!
@MidlifeGuitar
@MidlifeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you found him at the right time, and I often find that the way a particular person explains something to me the more it makes sense. It seems you are really moving along now with theory and I can relate to the feeling of not knowing what you doing! I feel like that 90% of the time if not more!😂

Justin's courses were a game changer for me. I had very casually tried to learn guitar for around a decade with little direction. Made very little progress. But I then I found and went through Justin's beginners and intermediate courses and they gave me a great structure with defined goals. Made me way better. Made more progress in 1 year than I had in 10 years. Wish I knew about it sooner. I think every beginner should start with his beginners course. Unless you have can spare the time and expense and have access to a very good in person teacher, then maybe do that.

i joined Justin's website earlier tonight and was cruising youtube about him, just seen this,, BRILL upload interview and has given me confidence in the man, he seems to be nice and down to earth 😊 i have been trying to self learn over 12 months via youtube sites, learning chords really bored me tbh, so i thought i would just learn tab and shred only lol...I am 54yrs old and had 2 years of private guitar lessons from 12yrs-14yrs...but didn't put the practice in (due to being a young fool!, wish i could go back in time and kick my own ass 😒) so here i am sitting with 4 electric guitars and one electro acoustic..2 practice amps and 1 progressive grid spark amp..., i can play a few songs badly, but gonna go back to a Beginner and start again with Justin...when he moves me on in the first month , then i will be a subscription donator for life and will always try to learn more and more :D My guitar life is in Justin's hands..I have the time to practice a lot now so no worries...lets go JUSTIN!!! 👍😁 The wife rolls her eyes when i say i have ordered another guitar...but i dont go sit in the pub all weekend and spend a lot of money on beers, i just save the money...just have my motorcycles and NOW guitars are my passion 👍 new sub, thanks for this :D

Very interesting video, i am an absolute beginner having picked up an acoustic guitar for the first time 10 weeks ago at the age of 62. I have been following Justin's beginners course and finding it an excellent tool, his idea of doing it himself left-handed to understand the difficulties faced by the beginner has to be commend. Justine teaching techniques and his work ethic is first class, i am looking forward to a time when i can play the songs i love and other people recognize what i am play!!!! Happy days.

Excellent interview. Lots to identify with as 'advanced' beginner, wanting to progress but not sure that I have confidence that the basics are really sound. And just getting really good at playing a few songs that I enjoy. Becoming a rock god will come in time! Justin's approach, which is first and foremost as a great teacher, not trying to flog stuff or self promote, is spot on: really sympathetic to the needs of his students.

Justin is very relatable. A great experiment to relearn guitar using his opposite hand. He shows how difficult it is to learn guitar even for an expert guitarist like himself. Most teachers forget what it's like to be a beginner. His left hand videos are perfect for right handed learners because it's like looking in a mirror for them.

Hey! I'm 27 and I'm new to the guitar world. Ijust bought mine like 2 weeks ago but have been only training on pushing the strings down using chord shapes and strumming randomly along to build caluses. My fingers still hurt but it doesn't matter. I got introduced to Justin's beginner course through your channel some days ago. And I also got inspired by your progress videos. You are really amazing! You got me ready to make a schedule and stick to it. You should know that this was after I almost gave up since it's been like 2 weeks of total randomness which made me think that the guitar thing's not for me. Thank you so much! And many Thanks to Justin for the huge effort he puts in.

I love Justin. I took his course years ago and got to the intermediate level. But I now want to go back and redo the beginner's course with the updates which sound great. I love Justin because he really understands beginners and never gets overly technical with them with music theory and the things most other music teachers on YT seem to do often. I wish you had asked him more questions about techniques/methods/approach for older beginners at 42:00 that you both started to talk about but got sidetracked by talking about family instead. But maybe you can ask him about it further if you ever interview him again. Thanks for the interview!

@MidlifeGuitar
@MidlifeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
In terms of playing them all the way through probably around 30 songs (which probably isn't a lot)but I haven't kept an accurate check on that. There is no way I could play them all now unless I practice a little first because I forget how to play them. Funnily enough I remember Justin saying somewhere that this is natural but to try and keep a repertoire of around 10 songs that you know how to play all the way through and work on these say once a week to keep them fresh.

Thanks for turning me on to Justin Guitar! I'm 60 and just starting (my first, and probably only guitar came a couple of weeks ago. I am also learning the piano and music production at the same time, so I'm treating it like a 4 year college, with guitar as one of the courses. Anyway, I picked up a udemy course for $12 and have access to Skillshare for a year, which is a step up on KZfaq for structure, but as a complete beginner to guitar (not to piano, though), I felt like the context was lacking. Justin, with his app and website really seems to understand a beginner's mindset, which makes him explain details that the courses I've seen kind of gloss over. Like his explanation of what part of the fret to play goes into beginner's finger pain and how playing near the next fret lowers the pressure you have to use to get a proper tone. The other teachers just said to play near the next fret without explaining why and moved on. Anyway, I had just purchased a year subscription to his lessons. Now, this is the funny part: I realized I needed to go to his website to find prelesson stuff, which happened to be able to be played on KZfaq, so I did. After listening to the video, I noticed this hour-long chat video with you (who I had just started following along, as well), so I clicked on it. It was hilarious to hear Justin's discussion on focus and KZfaq, having just done what he was discussing. Nevertheless, I think it was very insightful and cool to see how he views guitar learning from a macro perspective, especially since I was just a few minutes in to my guitar lesson journey with him. Thanks a lot!

We're so alike... So, I started at 33, not 39, a year and a half ago! I did all the Justin Guitar beginner course in something like 6 months, and will be oh-so-ever grateful for it - Justin is a gift from heaven, the most patient and overall best teacher I could have. I practiced, like you, for something like an hour a day - being a dad with 3 kids (and a fourth coming soon!) I don't have those 9 hours every day to invest in guitar learning like some guys show on youtube. Oh, and I got a Seagull S6 too as my first acoustic! It was so fun seeing you with it. I got a PRS Standard 24 as my electric then, though, unlike you. After the beginner course (and, as you did, I pushed it a little as well in the end) I took like 1 - 2 months consolidating, and headed straight to the intermediate method. Finished the courses - again pushing it a little at the end, close to my guitar birthday. Then I got to the folk fingerstyle module, which I really wanted to learn, and then the Blues Lead 1, and now the Blues Rythm 1... But I kinda stopped in the middle of this, made a new practice schedule and am now focusing on consolidation for a few months. I have a lot of stuff to consolidate, while also working on my technique and learning songs... I wish you the best of luck!

I have been using Justin since February and just finished Lesson 7 consolidation. I spent 2 months on that and just posted a couple of videos on youtube to get feedback from the JustinGuitar forum members. I really like Justin's teaching style. I also found it interesting regarding older folks learning...and yes, takes MUCH longer...that's why I put at least an hour a day in but often 2 or three hours a day. And that KZfaq rabbit hole...I fall into that trap as well, but I do so with a guitar in my hands and practice stuff while surfing youtube! Thanks for the video!

This is so amazing! I don’t know if Justin will read your comments, but I got an acoustic guitar for Christmas, knew nothing but really wanted to play Don’t Look back in Anger. Justin has been my main teacher. I now can play about 40 songs in total and am doing barre chords up and down the fret (still struggle a bit on my A shaped ones!), string bends, and hammer ons. Loads I want to get better at but this guy has made me go from “I’ll never be able to do this” to “I can learn anything on this with enough practice.” I will evangelize for Justin to the moon and back. Justin’s also given me new ways to woo my wife so thanks man

@@justinguitar Thanks. When the economy gets better and I get more funds I will make a point to donate more to you for so graciously doing all this for us for free. COVID shutdown would have sucked for me without discovering your site. Funny enough, discovered you after trying to learn Blackbird where I was convinced after watching Paul's Abbey Road show that this guy was teaching it wrong. Some peps said to check you out. Great Interview , well done on that -) big fan of Justins well done Justin for your courses , you are very very good at it , been learning guitar for just over 2 months now at the age of 60 , i am a bit different to most people i think ! I have been a Pro musician all my life (piano) now i find learning the guitar very interesting fun and humbling jumping from Giant Steps (Coltrane ) on the piano to "house of the rising sun " on the guitar and sounding shit , anyway enjoying your channel too and well done for your progress.

I just came across your channel. I'm also learning in my late 40's with young children in the house so I will be following your channel in interest. I can relate to one of your questions the most, the Guitar is very interesting but what type of guitarist do I want to be. There are many paths to choose, which one do you go down!

Hi! welcome to my channel, thanks for joining me. It sounds like we have a lot in common and yes it is hard to choose a path with so many great artists out there. I have found making a goal and schedule has really focused in on where I want to go. If you check out my guitar schedule video this could help kzfaq.info/get/bejne/obB9maeaqKeadYk.html. Let me know how you get on.👍

Hey man! It's awesome you've got to interview the legend! I'd like to recommend a couple of things -Prepare some questions and categorise them into topics in advance, not necessarily that you will have to ask everything or follow an order but they will serve as a compendium of topics you may want your interviewee to talk about. -When you want to comment on something the interviewee has just said ask a relevant question, from your list or something derived from what they have just said. I think we all enjoyed it very much and appreciate your effort. And sure we'd love to see other people in the channel. Subscribed here. Cheers!

Very enjoyable interview. I have followed Justin's original course through to almost the end of the beginner course. Interesting discussion about barre chords, I don't have any problem with making barre chord shapes and holding the chord, the problem I have is changing to and from them. Not managing these changes properly has really slowed my progress. Practice, practice, is the thing I suppose.

Great interview Justin, and you weren't to bad yourself Luke :p Hey, you didn't fanboi at all, good job! Oooh, man I can't wait for the black belt grade! I get the whole consolidating thing now. For instance, grade 5. That is seriously more info just in that grade than I can remember from the entire classic beginner's course. You see Music Theory Grade 5, but that is 4 modules in that grade alone, which is equivalent to 4 lessons anywhere else. The practice assistant has helped make this grade a bit more manageable and not so overwhelming now. My guess is I will be doing Blue Grade & consolidating some remnants from the Green grade for the rest of the year. Oh yeah, shoot it is September, so I'm saying it will be a year from now that I have this all consolidated & hopefully my barre chords are smokin' by then! Triads, Major 7, Dominant 7, Minor 7, Minor 7b5, C9, C13, et al have been a really good break up of the minontany of barre chords, which I'm finding really helpful when working on chord changes. I'm also doing the one thing you & I both were like meh with, and that is ear training/transcribing. That is freaking HARD! His ear training in Blue Foundation 5 is nuts as he plays real types of progressions.
@MidlifeGuitar
@MidlifeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
😂 Thanks Rich, I know I kept myself in check! Sounds like majority of people skip the ear training from Justin was saying. The biggest takeaway I got from this all was to concentrate of what you really love about guitar and follow that. Interestingly I saw an interview video crop up in my feed where Justin interviews Steve Vai and he said what he focused in on were his strengths / the things he loved to do and just worked on them and exaggerated them. There is so much to learn that it can become a distraction and focusing in on something will help us kep on enjoying the journey.

@@MidlifeGuitar most definitely on so much to learn. In regards to ear training, that is something I really want to get down because...Well there are quite a few song tutorials out there for songs I like that don't even sound close to right. There are transcriptions on Ultimate Guitar that don't sound right. One thing I definitely want to do is be able to hear a song & start playing it almost right away. I have a cousin that back in the early 80s she played keyboard & whatever she heard on the radio, a couple of minutes later she was playing it on the keyboard, or heck even on the sax. I want to do that, I want to hear the song & go, OH, key of G, work out the progression (requires me to remember the major scales which I haven't quite done yet). Then of course, like you, I want to be able to rip into a solo/improvisation where someone doesn't go "hey sweet minor pentatonic dude!" :D Speaking of distraction, and it isn't, I just realized I have roughly 12 tabs open for today's practice session. 2 backing tracks for improvisation, Transcribe with 5A loaded for ear training, a Theory spreadsheet open to work out Diatonic Quadad (4 chord notes) Analysis, practice app, and my 3 songs...That's approaching insanity maybe?
@MidlifeGuitar
@MidlifeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
The transcribing from ear goal is an awesome one to have and is one I want to work on but will probably be a real slow one for me just because of what I want to concentrate on right now. Will be great to see how you get on with it. On the practice session front, wow! 😂 but it sounds like you have it all organized so I'm sure it's all good!

@@MidlifeGuitar Yeah, it isn't to bad. Today I'm doing Triads 5m, 1 Minute Changes on Triads, Minimum Movement 5m, Minor Scale Picking 5m, YGS 365 Saturday Week 15 for 5m, Vibrato 5m, Blues Lead 10m (minor position 1 licks), Rhythm Guitar 5m (16th note strumming), Theory (Diatonic Quadad Analysis) 10m, Transcribing 10m, Improvising 10m, Repertoire 30m (10m each song - Stairway, Don't Stop Believin', and Wonderful Tonight which Justin pointed out in the interview). Just under 2 hours. Starting early so I can have fun & watch a live music event tonight & try to play along/improvise with. I'm thinking I'm going to give this current workout regiment I got going & then probably settle in on concentrating on Justin's Blues courses which are really good actually. I'm doing them now, but only spending 10 minutes, actually 20 minutes because improvising is always blues usually, some funk actually which is major & fun.

One way to at least try to avoid the clickbait, set the video to wide so the queued video's don't show and then go into full screen so you cannot see them. Shoegazing was a 90's thing, bands like Stone roses. Good interview.

Online lessons are boring and it's hard to pace your practice. Justin's sight is great but you have to be an organized person to benefit from it. If you don't have a strong practice routine the info will go in one ear and out the other. The first video of his lessons should be teaching students how to structure the practice routine.
@CherylAwh
@CherylAwh 10 ай бұрын
If you take the lessons on his site instead of on YT, at the end of the lessons for the week there is a button you can click to add his preset practice routine for that week. There's also a video where he walks you through what's on that list. The practice assistant is amazing. You get each step with built in timer, statistic tracker, and metronome. I don't know how much more structure you could have than that. ***THE WEBSITE LESSONS ARE FREE - YOU JUST HAVE TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT*** He does NOT spam your email. I get a monthly newsletter and that's it. 10/10 recommend.
