The Eyre Highway, so much to see and do, if you take your time and are prepared to explore.
In 2010, we set out to film this amazing stretch of road and produced a DVD, which we have now discontinued. In subsequent years, we have made the trip a number of times, and have finally updated and reassembled all of the footage that we have taken to produce what we think may be the definitive look at what is available for the intrepid traveller to explore.

I am a few years late with this comment. The old Nullarbor roadhouse was relocted to its new position next to the new roadhouse at some time between 1992 and 2015 I think. It is the original and not a recreation. In 1974 I travelled the old Nullarbor in my dad's Valiant Charger and we spent a few hours in the garage section of that building while the radiator was repaired. The road was pretty wet from rain on our trip and it was not possible to see all the pot holes. We went through one big hole and the radiator cracked which we noticed when we stopped for fuel. I remember the garage and the shop very well. The old road in those days was like a drain for the surrounding area after many years of grading so in many areas it was below the surrounding ground level and was more like a river in heavy rain. I have done that trip several times from Perth to Adelaide when it was unsealed. I did visit Koonalda in 2015 when I last went across to Perth (I live in Melbourne now) and I agree it is worth the diversion. I might actually drive the old road one day. I see you did one section some years ago. I attempted to get down to the Eyre Bird observatory on that same trip but relaised it was more than a short diversion and ran out of time so never got beyond the microwave tower. Intersting that in 1992 when we drove back to Perth the Eucla telegraph station was mainly uncovered (and back in 1974 I remember we drove around it) and we walked down to the beach as well and saw the remians of the jetty. The sandhills seemed to have encroached into the whole area now. Enjoying your videos so many thanks for making these.

Hi Michael. I just came acress this comment, and I apologise for not replying sooner. Thank you for your story, it helps us to understand what travellers contended with pre 4wd popular vehicles. My first crossing was just after the completion of the sealing of the highway. We have done the Nullarbor to Yalata section of the highway (permit required) in 2015 as well. I don't recall the original roadhouse being at Nullarbor in 2015, but have seen it since, so my feeling is that it happened after Sept 2015 - I stand to be corrected. This is the OEH Nullarbor to Yalata section video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g61obJeJm5faZ4E.html Thanks for dropping by, Cheers, Laurie.

Just discovered this video. I have crossed many times but always for work. I’m gonna have to pack up my ambo and have a look. I remember coming back from Leigh Creek and approaching the big roundabout in Ceduna, the linkages in my 3 on the three HJ Panel van jammed. That was fun at about 5.30am sorting that shit out. Made it to Caiguna that night as was allowed to park down the back for a good nights sleep.

Hi Dennis. I have a friend Jill Campbell on Kybo Station, whose father built the first motel units at Cocklebiddy in 1962. She is the unofficial historian on the Nullarbor. She can certainly tell some stories about the changes that have occurred out there over the years. My first trip across was in 1977 or 8 ... was all sealed by then. Little did I realise that I would spend a fair bit of time in the future exploring the plain. I towed my van from Koonalda back to Border Village along the Old Eyre Hwy in 2010 - why? Spur of the moment decision. Was in a lot better nick than I bet it was when you did your trip. Check out our Trans Australian Railway trip if you haven't already done so. Thanks for the story. Cheers, Laurie

Thanks for the tour, one thing I noticed was, the size of the trailers compared to the tow vehicles, here in USA most people use a larger tow vehicle to pull what you are towing. What does your trailer weigh.
@lauriekibblewhite
@lauriekibblewhite 2 жыл бұрын
All up 3.2 tonne. That's it's legal loaded weight. My Cruiser is legal to tow 3.5 tonne. Our speed limit is 100 kph for braked trailers, which to my mind is too fast if anything goes wrong, and it does. The Silverados, RAMs and F350's are starting to be seen over here, but they are very expensive (as are new Toyotas). Incidentally, my van is 23'6" - I live in it. Most are between 18' and 22'. Most tow vehicles that aren't 100 - 200 series Landcruisers are licensed to tow 3000 kg, and are smaller turbo charged engines. The bigger trucks are wider, and therefore more prone to off road damage on narrow tracks that pinstripe the standard 4WD. Cheers, Laurie

Isolation, no competition ... Nullarbor has no excuse for being the dearest IMO ... Nundroo proves that, and the fact that it's cheaper at the Border and Eucla.

Also there were quite a few installations like the Ivy Tanks along the old road to provide water for travellers in the summer months. I gues Ivy Tanks might be the only one remaining. My dad drove the Nullarbor in 1953 for his honeymoon and used a very basic tent so I think he had a love for the trip which might be why we did it so many times as a family. At Yalata the indigenous people my Dad told me would sit on the road to stop the traffic so they could sell artefacts to travellers. I never saw this when we did any of our trips.

I'm sorry Michael, I've just found this. I still haven't done the section from Nullarbor to Koonalda, but I think you may be right with regard to remaining tanks on the old section. In the 50's, many the indigenous people had been relocated to Yalata from Maralinga, and had been "plying their trade" at Ooldea on the Trans line I believe. As the years have gone on, things have definitely changed. Cheers, Laurie

I am surprised that that first station uses diesel engines, and not solar and wind to generate power.
@lauriekibblewhite
@lauriekibblewhite 2 жыл бұрын
I don't have an answer. Just trying to work out which station you are referring to, but I guess that for issues of obtaining a reliable source of power, diesel is an immediate supply as against wind and solar requiring a battery storage system that is dependent on the elements. Just a guess. But interesting observation. Thanks for dropping by. Cheers, Laurie.
