As a loudspeaker/crossover designer I must say this was a pretty good introduction of what x-overs do. Good job. I'll even give the bs sales tactic a break because the info was basically correct.

It's not quite as simple as using 4th order filters because the response of the drive unit has to be considered as well. You also have to consider how the impedance of the drivers change with frequency if the crossover is passive. I prefer active crossovers even if I have to buy or build more amps. If PMC is saying that the total driver + crossover slope is 4th order then that's a different, but not completely, accurate story. Bi or Tri-amping has other advantages as well.

Why do you use inductors with an ion core? That will certainly add distortion. The best and most precise inductor is known to be a foil inductor. Some of them ex. by Jantzen called Wax coils even has the possibility to change the value by hand just by physically removing some of the foil. The next thing I can see is that you use electrolytic capacitors. That is a component not suitable for crossover designs. It will add a lot of distortion. Also it will dry out and change a lot over the years. A film capacitor is a much more precise component and it stays the same even after many years. The last thing is resistors. The induction free resistor is the most suitable and best sounding in my opinion. So it looks like you have chosen the cheaper option when it comes to collecting crossover components. I believe you could improve your speakers extremely much just by using better components for your crossovers.

Thanks very much PMC, there is so much rubbish on the internet, your beautifully explained workings of a speaker crossover is a vast improvement on any other short video on youtube (albeit for commercial purpose, fair enough and still) very appreciated! I myself am on the verge of building my 3 way active system, with 3 amplifiers. What crossover would you folks recommend? Also other youtubers welcome. Sofar I have a minidsp wich is usb software controlled, has high quality BUT lacks the on the fly controlls. Anyone know an affordable good quality 3 way crossover with manual controlls?

if i got a 200 watts amp. 100w left and 100w right, is there an specific crossover to be use for these amp, or any cross over fits all. i mean if it is 100w, i have to buy a crossover design for 100w, or any crossover works

bull fucking shit fullrange speakers dont exist every speaker that i have build other than one has been a full range speaker and in my opp-ion its the only way to do it because if you have a crossover you are always missing somthing
