Love the platter! Cuban mahogany is beautiful wood, and the grain at the crotch of the tree is stunning. Great project!

A really beautiful platter, Tim! I like your double bead around the opening with one higher than the other. I often make one but will definitely consider two for my next platter. Great video, thanks! Phil

That turned out (pun intended) really nice. I think the wood grain in the second one is even better than the first which is crazy since they were only separated my a few inches in the tree!

Apparently you posted two videos today. When I attempted to view the first one it was blocked. This one however is excellent. And it looks like you got two beautiful platters from the same mahogany crotch. They are both great. Thanks Tim.

Stunning!! Excellent turning Tim. Have you ever finished with Water lox? It buffs out really well and would really make that crotch figure pop with a durable semi-gloss finish; I find that Danish oil will dull over time.

When the blade hits the guides when cutting through a thick slab, you'll get sparks if you're pushing too fast for how well the blade can cut. In this case, it's a dense hardwood, which means even a new saw blade will struggle after a few inches. It can also mean the weight of blank is pulling the blade at an angle. If you're getting a shower of sparks, back off and check your blade and the blank, and consider getting more support for the blank, but a few sparks like this aren't a big deal.
