CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jen (Ziyi Zhang) takes on a tavern full of warriors - and wins.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee took a break from making Western period dramas to fashion this wild and woolly martial arts spectacular featuring special effects and action sequences courtesy of the choreographer of The Matrix (1999), Yuen Woo Ping. In the early 19th century, martial arts master Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) is about to retire and enter a life of meditation, though he quietly longs to avenge the death of his master, who was killed by Jade Fox (Cheng Pei-pei). He gives his sword, a fabled 400-year-old weapon known as Green Destiny, to his friend, fellow martial arts wizard and secret love Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), so that she may deliver it to Sir Te (Sihung Lung). Upon arrival in Peking, Yu happens upon Jen (Zhang Ziyi), a vivacious, willful politician's daughter. That night, a mysterious masked thief swipes Green Destiny, with Yu in hot pursuit -- resulting in the first of several martial arts action set pieces during the film. Li arrives in Beijing and eventually discovers that Jen is not only the masked thief but is also in cahoots with the evil Jade. In spite of this, Li sees great talent in Jen as a fighter and offers to school her in the finer points of martial arts and selflessness, an offer that Jen promptly rebukes. This film was first screened to much acclaim at the 2000 Cannes, Toronto, and New York film festivals and became a favorite when Academy Awards nominations were announced in 2001: Tiger snagged ten nods and later secured four wins for Best Cinematography, Score, Art Direction, and Foreign Language Film.

Man, for those who were never around for the film release, this was a movie that pushed 3 hours and had audiences see this two or three times. It's that good.

Interestingly, its reception in the Chinese speaking world was rather lacklustre relative to the West (especially the U.S.). To this day we have people insisting that the film is an overrated and overhyped work that only managed to fascinate the Western audience who didn't know better 😁. The same goes for "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers".

So, fun fact, Theravadan Buddhist monks actually are permitted to eat meat. They can't hunt, harvest, or eat animals that were specifically killed for them, but to quote one monk I talked to, "You eat what they put in your alms bowl or starve. Beggers can't be choosers."

@@starsgears9200 it's not so much about begging or choosing. Its that to accept an alm is to give someone good karma, so rejecting someone's alm is just not a good thing to do. So even if the alm is meat, you accept it for their good karma.

This scene is an example of the beauty of martial arts movie storytelling. Even with the Green Destiny in hand, she still used non lethal methods to dispatch her opponents. She could have turned that restaurant into a slaughterhouse, but still showed compassion and knew that she wasn't like Jade Fox.

I just watched it again the other day. For the fourth time I think. It's almost perfect. One thing that makes this film so special is that the beneath all the grandiose motion, beauty, timing and cinematographic craftsmanship, there is a lightness/cheerfulness that runs through the entire film. It's always there but without ever making it lose its gravitas or becoming flippant. It simply cannot be overstated how important and rare this is. It's an epic told from a perspective of youth, kinda like The Seventh Seal. 10 Oscar nominations 20 years ago, imagine that.

Freedom is one of the big themes of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and what Jen desired most of all was freedom. This chapter of the movie was all about her acting out her fantasies of freedom, more specifically that of the free and untamed fighter, misguided though those fantasies were. Everything she did in the story was all to break free from the constraints of her life, even though doing so brought ruin to herself and those around her. Quite tragic.

She never kills anyone in this entire movie, which I think says a lot about her. She wanted to be a great warrior but she lacked both the resolve and heart to be a killer like her master. Deep down she just couldn’t do it. She just needed to realize it herself that she was already a warrior.
@djbenje4019
@djbenje4019 4 жыл бұрын
Being 'a killer' does NOT define a 'great warrior'. In no way is it a requirement or pre-requisite. In fact, it is the sign of being a great kung-fu master to have the discipline to not take innocent life, for no good reason. Killing EVIL people is another story. Perhaps she simply did not come across any purely evil opponents. However she missed her one big opportunity to recognize the evil in her own master, and kill her. And in failing to do so, caused the death of an incredibly godly soul. And the pain of that fact caused her to take her own life. This has nothing to do with 'killing' in order to become a 'great warrior'.
@tHojthOp

This even though is a martial art movie, the story actually focuses in the lack of human freedom in ancient China and this girl's journey in defying society to get to be herself, to love who she wants, to do what she likes to. She never wanted to fight or kill, she thought she would become a warrior because she misunderstood that the kung fu masters like Shu Lien or Mu Bai were free from society's boundaries, which they weren't. That explains the ending where she jumped off a bridge, not only out of feeling guilty, but sadly also because it was the only way she could free herself from the cruel world of old China, where personal rights were discriminated. I think you need to watch the movie again, this time considering the director's touch on human value, to really understand this masterpiece.

She would've been perfect cast for Azula if The last airbender already exist and done during this time.

Can Ang Lee direct a Star Wars film with immediate effect? The offerings we have been served so far from JJ and Johnson have been risible, give Ang Lee an opportunity.

That. Would. Be. AMAZING! But unfortunately, they would rather write mary sues and piss on the face of a franchise.

I've heard that Star Wars actually drew inspiration from old Japanese samurai and Chinese martial art classics. It'd be interesting to see an Asian director's take on the franchise.

damn. I love her and her character. A girl is going into a marriage she doesn't want and her whole life is made to feel like she's delicate and not capable of much? Go the fuck off! Have some fun! Feel important and powerful!

The best martial arts movie in 30 years. Maybe in 50 years to come, because no one make this kind of movie, with real sword, real properties, real martial arts and minimal cgi effect.
