I worked on the Sea-Lift 86 modules in Portland. In 86 they were coming up with ways to cut weight. The iron went together with bolts, then welded and bolts removed. We had the Lampson Transi-Lift, Manitowoc 4600, American Sky-Horse 11320, Manitowoc 4100 and many juice rigs The mod I was on weighed 2600 ton. One mod had a 200 ton steam drum, we used the 11320 and the 4600 on that lift. Neil F Lampson drove onto the site with a Japanese crane buyer, told the crew to have a weight on the hook and in the air. He drove his Lincoln under the weight, got out and showed the buyer his crane. Was Arco and then both Arco and BP.

I worked for Crowley/Arctic Marine from the beginning, the first Prudhoe delivery in the summer of '69 through '76. Mostly I was the barge engineer on the Barge 218, a crane/crew barge lightering general cargo. It was a great experience, but brutal hours and work conditions. I also participated in the salvage and refloat of the Barge 414 blown ashore at Wainwright, shown in this video. That was the toughest job of my career.
