Benny shapes the tunnel of the Toyota Crown to fit the Great Wall gearbox.
Arguably the point of no return... the 'irreversible' !!

Great video. I'm a big fan of the fabricating & problem-solving episodes with enough detail to learn something. (Obviously, as a youtube commenter, I'm already an expert on welding - so I'm talking about the other stuff...)

I use 25 mm ratchet straps to hold the gearbox onto the transmission jack, They hold it a lot more secure

hi benny a little trick when welding on the inside of the car get a take away container round or rectangle drill a hole in it big enough to fit the mig nozzle in then hold container over where you are going to weld insert nozzle and weld. it will hold all the sparks in the container and not all over the interior of the car or spatter glass cheers from broken hill
@yowie0889

But where do you put the container full of sparks when you're finished?

This seems like a great idea. Sadly I don't think it'll work in the UK. All our takeaways come in cardboard 😂.

Regarding the standardization of components like the bushings for the engine and trans mount, do you ever acquire some to hold in reserve, or are you confident that the vendor will 1. continue to stock them, and 2. stay in business. A little supply chain question.

I admire your tidiness, however, I see a lot of cubic feet of storage space along the back wall up near the ceiling. Be a good place for temporary, dry storage of items like the interior of vehicles you are working on. Of course, then it would start looking a little disorganized in your work area. What is your tolerance for disorder? 😀

Enjoying the Project Benny, I’m curious where I can find out more information about these Great Wall 6spds, I’ve done a little googling and haven’t found much. Pretty interested as to that other applications they could be used in, if it’s a Toyota copy R154 with an extra gear I’d be pretty keen to see what I can jam these into in the future.

Can weld anything with an angle grinder hey Benny :P :) On a serious note, are you concerned about the amount of load on those GB mounts, specifically the weld between the sleeve and plate? It doesn't look like there is much support past the weld.

Don't have to be a good welder, just a good grinder. 🤷‍♂️

Why do all the JZX guys swap out the R154 for a TR6060?
@drewski5730
@drewski5730 5 ай бұрын
Because the R154 fails between 500-800hp catastrophically. Theres no fixing it with conventional components either, its third gear that doesn’t have enough metal. There are a handful of unconventional fixes like installing a Tremec or CD009 gearbox depending upon needs, or a full dog box rebuild for the R154 by PPG. The V160 is the best way, but that gearbox (if you can find one) is well over $10,000 just for a core and they don’t make parts for it anymore (it’s basically unobtanium to the point where Supra guys are swapping in the Tremec and selling the V160 and making money in the process).
