We discuss the next subclass in the series from Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide the oath of the Crown Paladin! This subclass gets some interesting abilities... find out what we think of this subclass! The best part of Crown Paladins, at least for me personally, is Spirit Guardians. It’s an incredible spell, even for a ninth level character.

My favorite Paladin subclass even though people think it’s one of the weaker ones. But it just feels so cool to scream “FOR THE QUEEN”!

Currently playing a 14th level Crown Paladin and it's great. The Channel Divinity to "taunt" enemies is AoE, not just single target, and plenty of times I've been in situations where I do that and then dodge while multiple enemies try to beat on me or I'll hit the Channel Divinity and the Wizard will fear the enemies so they can't come closer to me and they can't leave 30 feet from me. It's juicy, non-concentration, and super useful. The spells are okay, I don't really consider Paladins as real casters but their spell selections are great. Best Paladin? Not by a long shot. Super effective Paladin? Absolutely.

Kind of shocked at the low rating I think this is the strongest Paladin subclass. It is designed around being a tank that actually can tank in the MMO sense in any situation and has a bonus of keeping your party alive. It does that extremely well.

It has a few too many “asterisks” in its abilities that limit it too much in our opinion. Nothing game breaking even if some of the limits/requirements were removed. A decent utility option, but nothing much considering some of its abilities may never be used over the course of several sessions. Thanks for watching!

I can’t get over it, you guys are so positive about everything, even if things are pretty underwhelming; you always give at least the positives and of course to knowledge the negatives but you’re always giving each class a fair shake at the stick. once again thank you for all you do and good luck with the new book.

So true, why I really enjoy these video reviews over some others. As the guys say there's a lot of literal rules lawering around. D&D has always carried a lot of small print, but in bold letters has it's your game do as you wish.

I really like this class, I always pump charisma with my paladins and this class gets pretty rewarded for it with Champion Challenge and Spiritual Guardians, as well as being a god of paralysis/stun saving throws. So you cant be stunned, cant be paralyzed, cant be frightened.. kinda nutty

Crown Paladin's are pretty well set up for a more Inquisitor/Justicar style out of combat in finding the truth, and in combat, they're pretty much the major tank Paladin subclass for locking down the entire force of the enemy with Champion's Challenge (It doesn't actually have a maximum number of targets, so moving ahead of the group into the cluster of enemies and pop the Challenge to call all of them down on you rather than your allies), and the healing one is pretty much a last ditch effort to bring everyone back up for a last ditch effort. The damage shifting actually seems to work very well for keeping some of the weaker allies in the party such as a rogue or some of the melee casters who don't really have the hitpoints to withstand it. If you have a situation where you absolutely need a caster to keep their concentration on a spell, it's also a major thing. Before everything started, I was playing one with the Protector Aasimaar Crown Paladin, and grabbed Shield Master and the Protection style to aid in control. The Crown Paladin is pretty much heavily focused into a slot that doesn't spread out as much.

Crown is actually one of my favorite paladins. I think the best paladin feature is the find steed spells and crown is the best mounted paladin imo. You've got to think of it like you are the tank, if you are taking hits intended for others you are doing a good job.

The Divine Allegiance damage can't be reduced or prevented is a great RP ability, it is about sacrificing your health by jumping in front of the attack and taking it! The damage can still be healed, but it is about the noble sacrifice for an ally!

With a few tweaks (like removing the aforementioned "asterisks"), then it would be fun to dive headfirst into the loyalty of the paladin class and aim it towards another player (like Sam Gamgee and Frodo from LOTR). I would love to see a little halfling paladin lay down the law on anyone who dares to even look at their liege in the wrong way, haha!

I love the concept, I don’t love the way it works. I read another comment that said they’d love to play this with a friend playing as a king or queen. Order domain cleric would be so great for the friend and I see the role play being super fun.

Been playing a Druid and have pretty much been my party's healer, but also have been interested in playing the monk so may mix the two together and try out the Way of Mercy subclass. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on it along with all the other subclasses :)

This class is great. With it's channel divinity and Compelled Deul, you can be a great zoner. Ancestral Guardian Barb 3(or Armorer Artificer 3)/Crown Pali 17 is NUTS.

Why am I picture a a character build with this something akin to a police officer. Take Urban Bounty Hunter as a background. Maybe a couple levels or rogue or bard to flesh it out. If they only come back out with the urban ranger/druid. Lol But I'm thinking Chicago P.D. Hank Voight ish style character.

I'm playing a crown paladin and I think its good for a defender type paladin. I feel like the channel Divinity champion challenge is terrible, because they can still attack others. Just use compelled duel. Everything else is pretty useful

For combat, its definitely better than a 2, especially at level 9 and onward when you have 3rd level spells.

Thing is all other Paladin subclasses also have 3rd level spells. This subclasses doesn’t add too much to combat that the base Paladin doesn’t already have access to in our opinion unfortunately. Thanks for watching!

He didn’t mean 3rd level spells in general; he was talking about getting spirit guardians. Spirit guardians is far and away the best spell on any Paladin list at any level. I don’t know if that fact makes up for lackluster abilities elsewhere, but it definitely is a game changer.

Don’t get me wrong, turn the tide isn’t good at all, but it’s comparable to mass healing word, a third level spell. But yeah that stipulation that they have to be beneath half health makes it on par with a first or second level spell.

Divine Allegiance is like a much worse version of warding bond and Unyielding Spirit has immense counter-synergy with aura of purity. Exalted Champion is interesting. It lasts for 1 hour, so it’s substantially longer than a barb rage, and it’s a barb rage layered on top of heavy armor, it also doesn’t have the stipulations that barb rage has, but it’s extremely similar to barb rage, an ability barbarians receive at first level. The advantage on death saves isn’t bad, but like, c’mon you’re a paladin within 30 ft go over there and share some of your lay on hands. The major positive behind exalted champion is the advantage on wisdom saves, which if layered with their bonus to saving throws is amazing. But this is something devotion paladin already gets since they have the spell beacon of hope. Let Unyielding Spirit be like a limited version of aura of purity and have it give off an aura and it gives ally’s adv on saving throws against paralysis and stun. Exalted champion is extremely similar to beacon of hope, so why not add on the excluded benefit and have anybody who is within 30 ft regain the maximum from any healing it’s a substantial power increase, but dude it’s a level 20 feature it’s allowed to be broken.

Vengeance paladins still have the best spell list IMO. This is cool path though. I still prefer the oaths being to deities considering the standard spells given to paladins

I mean if the players got together and worked a group around it's abilities you could use this as a great off tank sucking up damage from a barbarian and squishy damage dealers. While getting some heals. Maybe over thinking it hah

20th capstone ability seems kind of lack luster. Resistance to non magical weapon dmg at lvl 20? What creature or enemy will be using non magical weapon dmg at lvl 20??? Seems useless. Other two perks arent that bad.

I’m playing a +5 strength barbarian with the noble background. Am going to add to my charisma until I can multi class as a crown Paladin who gets reeled back in to the nobility and has to swear allegiance to the crown. I’m currently level 2 and will have to reach level 8 before I can multi class. Don’t know if that’s a bad idea but I’m gonna do it lol

I have a level 13 crown paladin, he's a tiefling who was diversity hire for his paladin order. I have never had much success with the champion challenge ability, it's pretty situational and usually my party just broke it.

In my opinion this is a good choice until level 12ish but then after that its pretty average (especially level 20 is just rage with a paladin skin) Would definitely multiclass after level 12

Great guide for a disappointing class. Sometimes its fun to play a less powerful class with a really straightorward job. I could see this being built as a 'bad' paladin with pretty low strength but high charisma. Like a king's messenger who was too weak to be a guard. Could be really fun roleplay!

Was the crown paladin created today, it would be a way more interesting and powerful subclass (as a lot of subclasses from the same book and from PHB). Just see twilight cleric generating higher temp HP every turn for a minute in the same area or canceling charm and frightened conditions under the same channel divinity. On the other hand, UA Watchers paladin seemed not very inspired. Let's see the Tasha's version.

This is another I see as a very specific game, like a pre generated game character set to a game where assassins are after the king, queen, prince or princess... not my cup of tea. Vengeance is mine ;)

A take on Oath of the Crown instead of swear an Oath on the LAW. As made by his order who runs their own city.....IE A Medieval version of Mega City One and Judge Dredd.

I love the flavor of this subclass but it seems pretty weak when it comes to combat. Especially in comparison to other subclasses which is kind of disappointing.

This subclass, in my opinion, is really bad compared to the other paladins. The only good thing about it is the "flavor" and even that is not unique (you can easily RP that with a cleric or a fighter). As always, keep the videos coming.

I found that this pally really wasn't that bad when playing with one. A pally with Spirit Guardians is extremely good at holding the line against enemies that would move in on your back line. Assuming you can make that Con check. That capstone is absolute trash though.
