' Rather ' can be used also in the following ways without adding ' would ' : 1) as an adverb (before an adjective or another adverb): She’s been treated rather badly. 2) (before a verb): He rather enjoys watching it. 3) as a predeterminer (followed by “a”): This is rather a good wine. 4) in the conjunction phrase rather than: It would be better to remove it, rather than leave it. 5) as a way of showing how a sentence is connected to what has already been said: His purpose was not to attack. Rather, it was to defend.

I'd rather write sentences than read. I'd rather you wrote the sentences. I'd rather you didn't write on bathroom's wall. I'd rather not go tomorrow. I'd rather practice speaking than writing. Would you like to have tea or would you rather have coffee?

Hi Andrew. I love very much your way of teaching English. 1) Is the rule: To describe a preference of one thing compared to another thing, available with one subject and two subjects? 2) Is it correct? > =? I prefer you asked before using my computer. I wish you a very nice new year!
