I've helped driver in NYC get out of jams like this,, i run a day cab, ive had guys frop thier trailers, and id drop my trailer. Hook up to thiers and maneuver it and get them out of a tight spot... drivers who help each other are what keeps this industry together..

Im a truck driver and i never got in a situation like this...its not funny its sad to watch..this has nothing to do with being a new driver its just common sense and you need to have a very good estimate where can your truck fit and where it cant...i would understand maybe if he was behind the wheel of that truck for the first time but otherwise i really dont because you have those situtations in the driving practice for your licence...if your cab fits trough doesnt mean that your trailer will...some people should just stick to driving smaller trucks and if that is too much maybe a van...if you see the spot is tight and you might not make it rather turn on hazards for 1 min to get out and check the situation before you go into it and hold up traffic for 1 minute than going into it and clinching your ashole and pray that you make it...assumption is the mother of all fuckups...btw sorry for my bad english not my mother language

I'm not trying to be overly sensitive but my heart broke for this guy. I made plenty of mistakes driving trucks when I first started. And sometimes you WILL get bad directions from a shipper/receiver no matter how careful you are. I've been sent to places that no longer existed because they failed to update directions. Even their phone number was invalid. I still drive trucks but I thank God every day that I have a round trip route now. I am familiar with the roads and it makes a world of difference. You pros out there can have all that OTR stuff (no offense). I'm just not cut out for having my nerves wrecked. I respect all of you who go out there and do it everyday. Be safe.

Brittany Farrier it's not only the drivers fault for being there. Not enough training to be in the city like that. Hell I still make mistakes.

almost none of the highways in nyc allow bus or trucks. Its very stupid i think. The mayor wants more people to take public transit. they need to get some bus going express on the highway. It takes way too long to go from Brooklyn to Queens, the Bronx to queens etc. They made a lot of traffic cutting back lanes for bikes and buses only. But it doesn't speed anything up as you still have to wait for the red lights and someone always double parks as they cut parking for rental bikes. =(

A similar situation like this happened to me years ago. I was in a city that I was unfamiliar with and I didn't trust my gps that had screwed me over before. I called in to the shipper and got directions but the lady failed to mention the low bridge on the way. I pulled on to that street and saw the bridge up ahead and immediately stopped. I had no idea what to do so I just called the non emergency line of the local police and explained my situation. 4 police cars showed up and they helped be back up to another street to get me arround the low bridge. What an incredibly stressful situation but I stayed calm and the police were incredibly helpful. The best thing you can do is just park it and wait for help. Trying to get out of situations like this yourself will just cause damage to property, vehicles and your equipment.

Do not blindly follow GPS. Not even truck GPS, which is often wrong. GPS and atlas are only tools. They can be helpful, but can't rely on them 100%. Need to also use your own eyes and brain to figure it out. And for navigating city streets, need to pull out your computer and get truck routing from that city's website. New York city has some very good maps available, both online and paper (that they'll mail for free). Need to do your homework before going into cities. That having been said, companies are to fault here too. OTR truckers have to drive all over America, and it's asking a lot to expect them to do all of that research for so many deliveries, on top of everything else they have to do. And low wages to boot. What trucking companies should do for places like NYC and Chicago is have local drivers in day cabs do the pickups and deliveries, then hand it off to OTR drivers at drop yards to do the long distance. The local drivers can have knowledge of the streets and how to get to each customer, and a day cab is easier to maneuver in tight spots. And the companies should provide maps for local streets, too. They send hundreds of trucks to a lot of these places every year, but it would take just one person a few hours to create a map for how to navigate the complex maze of streets to get there safely and legally. They do nothing but provide a street address, and sometimes even that is wrong (e.g., the office address rather than warehouse). And the street address isn't necessarily the delivery entrance, which might be on a different side of the property. And it might be crucial to be driving down the street a particular direction to be lined up for it. And truckers are just left to figure this stuff out on their own, driving blind into new locations. False economy.

I drove dedicated from Atlanta to NYC two times a week. I was nervous the first trip. I ended up in downtown Bronx the first time. My nerves were a wreck. I managed to get out with not too many issues. A local asked where I was going and he actually escorted me by the best route. He mapped out a route for me when I told him my route. Ever since then, I followed his routing and it lead me directly to the dock where I needed to be with no issues. The dock sucked like hell. It was in an alley between two buildings and no light on the dock to help angle your trailer. I did that dedicated for one month. It became stressful over time. It was a great experience though and actually made me improve my skills. This was back in my 2nd year of driving. Now, tight docks and blind backing really don't bother me anymore. Would I do it again, honestly, NO. Imagine how great new driver's would be if all the driving schools in America were based out of NYC, and the bureaus.

Thanks for making this video series. Will tell you that most truck specific GPS units will fail a trucker . They'll route you into forbidden parkways all over NJ and NYC. Even when properly updated and properly programmed. Also, the mirrors on the modern trucks are too small, and it's a matter of huge consequence! Drivers usually enter city with trailer wheels slid foreward(a must!). But the flip side of doing so creates more trailer "butt strike" threat to cars and poles.Hope you have a video about the difference between an EXPRESSWAY--versus--the truck forbidden PARKWAYS in that tristate region. Thanks

I was delivering a load of Christmas trees right after 9/11 to the families of the fallen donated out of Michigan. My first stop was in D.C. then onto NYC. I was given directions but the more I looked at them nothing made sense. Being a veteran driver, I ended up in the wrong place for an 18 wheeler. I had brownstones one both sides with cars parked on both sides. My last words to the person giving me directions was, 'Am I going to run into any low bridges?' I was assured that there weren't any. Lol. I ran into 2 that ran the trains out to Long Island. I want to gratefully thank the New York Police, their patience and experience helped me finally get to where I needed to go. The next morning my direction guide showed up at the hotel and I forcefully thanked him for those kind directions. All this time I was being filmed and followed by a camera crew documenting the 'gift from Michigan'. Thankfully the job got completed and the trees got delivered to those in need. The streets of NYC are not made for 53' trailers and long nosed highway trucks.
