Going to the ship infirmary is just like going to the emergency room, it would cost the same for a visit to ER but you don’t typically realize the cost because you have insurance. Definitely a reason to always purchase trip insurance with medical.

On our very first cruise, circa mid-70s (Princess) I visited the medical office onboard. Diagnoses: Upper Respiratory Infection. I was given medication to treat it. Cost to me: Zero !!! Time's have certainly changed !!!

If you can afford to cruise, you can afford travel insurance. My guess is that for a couple the travel insurance would've been maybe 10% of that medical bill and remember it covers so much more than just medical.

Behind the ear patch for sea sickness worked great for my husband and I. We got them from our doctor before we left for our cruise. Much more cost effective.

To a Canadian seeing this tab for medical services is enlightening. The only time we see a medical bill is when something isn’t covered by a government sponsored provincial health plan. I remember going into an emergency dept. at a St. Augustine hospital around 1977 and having to stop by the cashier to pay for a blood test and urine test before they would do them. It wasn’t a lot back then but still had to pay up front.

My husband fell on Caribbean Princess, xray, blood work, over night in the hospital, medication and wheelchair rental for 4 days and our bill was only $3,400! Seems like the person in your story way over paid! And the doctor personally contacted Allianz to start the reimbursement claim.

Or there was more to the story than simply sea sickness.

Good morning Doug! How many times do people have to be told to purchase travel insurance? The insurance would have cost way less than the amount charged by medical services. Go figure! Thanks for the updates and have a great day.

Happily, my wife and I aren't prone to seasickness so I can't make a educated comment on the issue. I have heard, though that doses of ginger in some form before sailing and periodically throughout the voyage can ease the effects of motion sickness. Might save some money too. Another great report.

Mornin' Doug! A question: Are the medical staff members on a ship cruise line employees, or contracted services? I'm not sure it makes a big difference, but if they're contract it might help explain the hefty fees. I suppose supply and demand plays a role, too. One more reason for cruise insurance and bringing your own small kit of common just-in-case medications.
@CruiseRadio

Contracted. They have an equivalent degree in their country. Most are great but boy are there stories.

I bought through the cruise line I was traveling on and needed to go to medical, thinking since I had insurance through the cruise line it would take care of the bill, I was wrong. You pay up front and then put in a claim to get reimbursed. What’s the point of buying insurance through the cruise line if you still pay out of pocket.

I chose to treat myself and bypass medical. I was told that if you bought the insurance through the cruise line that you would not be charged to go to medical. But I will always buy the insurance, just in case.

Happy Winning Wednesday Doug Parker! I like the idea of faster cruise port check in and I guess the facial recognition technology is here to stay. Although it is kinda scary. My sister’s daughter can unlock my sister’s iPhone with her face. But there’s only one me (I hope)…lol. Yeah, don’t get sick on a cruise. That’s a staggering bill. I assume the cruiser was ok after the incident since she was well enough to post the bill & redact her personal info. Thanks for sharing my friend. Have a blessed and beautiful day. ✌🏾🛳️🥰

Good morning, Doug! Is it me or anyone else concerned about the facial recognition technology that’s being used. Is it just for that cruise, or is it filed into a governmental database? This is why we always travel with a sea sickness medication. We’ve only used it once but my wife was up and running inside 2 hours! Anyways, have a stellar day Doug and we shall see you tomorrow!!😎

My mom used the medical center in a NCL ship (she fell and fractured her foot), her bill ended up being much less than it would have been going to the ER here in the US. We did submit to her travel insurance once we got home, and all was reimbursed, after jumping thru some hoops…😊 We always get the travel insurance!

Don't only rely on insurance, you still need to pay before getting off the ship and then be reimbursed (if covered). You have to have enough to pay to get off the ship.
@TripReviews

Yes and keep your fingers crossed that the insurance will pay up. Note too all travel insurance policies (Canadian anyway) also have clauses for preexisting conditions. So if you hurt youself by falling and the insurance company comes back with well your diabetic and your blood sugar dropped causing you to you faint I wish you luck arguing with them! You need insurance however I don’t trust insurance companies.
