Cruise Ship Breaks its Mooring Line

On October 24, 2019 Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas was departing Falmouth, Jamaica. As it pulled away one of the still attached port bow lines snapped. Even though the snap was very loud, the dockworkers didn't seem to notice!

If you watch this in slow motion it is clearly visible that no lines snapped. The small lines (messengers) attached to the mooring lines were jammed around the bollard and pulled free when they came under tension. The purpose of the messenger is for a light (heaving)line to be tied to it and is then thrown from the ship to the men on shore.The eye of the mooring line is put over the bollard and the slack taken up by the ship.The heaving line can then easily be untied from the messenger.

It’s just the rope tail which is spliced onto the eye of the mooring rope, it’s there to attach heaving lines so that the boatman can throw the mooring rope eye over the bollard and then take the heaving line off… I can assure you the boatman will be aware that it’s happened and the ships crew will just splice another length of rope on ready for the next port! That’s even if anything actually parted…

That's not a mooring line and id probably didn't break. It was just the messenger and they can get stuck. Often the easiest way to dislodge them is to let them come loose in that way. If the mooring likes broke it would be so loud and so dramatic that the two lines men would have ducked for cover as such instances can be fatal.

Thanks for the comment! When I looked at the video closely, I too wondered if it was something like you describe.
