I'm a golf professional and worked as an instructor for CCL. It was very rewarding developing friendships with fellow crew from all over the world. Giving lectures, instruction, and playing golf with passengers was a great experience. My time onboard seemed like more of a six month vacation as opposed to work. Unfortunately, after only one contract, the golf program was eliminated. I would come back if the cruise lines would reinstitute the program.

Best video yet. The mature advice applies to anyone that is starting out in life. Most people’s first job is not their career forever job. Exit strategy or short term and long term goals are important to be successful in life.

Great video Lucy. 😊 My husband worked on cruise ships many years ago. He did 8 contracts and saved up enough to start his own successful business but he loved the life and really the only reason he stopped when he did was because he met me! 😂 Now our daughter is following in his footsteps. Friday was her "two-month-boarding-versary"! She is having a great time and I can tell you that in the run-up to boarding your advice videos were really helpful. Ikea foldable drawer organisers? Best thing ever! 😂 Thanks very much. 😊

Lucy, thanks for such an insightful video! You show wisdom and honesty here, that is damn rare these days, and almost non-existent among on-line content! 😀 Take care and Fair Winds!

While I was on the ships as a keyboardist/piano player, I used to use my internet card to look on the newly invented Ebay to buy collectible stamps, and piles of purchases would always be awaiting me when I got home. Then I started realising I preferred being home looking at my stamps than playing piano all over the world, however, the prospect of leaping into space without a safety net plus letting the side down (trio) was daunting. Luckily, the decision was made for me, when one night in the crew bar in 2007 I was found to be extremely drunk and argumentative, which witnesses say was also racist, so that was 2 out of the 5 gross misconducts, ensuring not only my feet didnt touch the ground, but would never be asked back after 16 contracts with that particular company, my cruise ship career had begun in 1990, on and off. So it was my 'salad days' as someone said. So when I got home, I set up a new business buying/selling stamps and coins on ebay - a complete change of career, and havent had a drink since, you will all be very pleased to hear. Retired now of course, in case anyone from HMRC is watching 😁.

Hello again Lucy, I went to sea as a medic but always had the plan that it would be for a max of five years. As a heart specialist I felt that at the end of that time I would start to be deskilled. I left after Four and half years as a job in a major cardiac hospital close to where I lived came up that I applied for and was hired. I don't regret one minute of my time at sea and would advise any nurse seeking that role to apply, but you need experience behind you it is not a job for the newly qualified. If you are a specialist have a plan to return to your role in the long term.

Lucy, I wish I knew that cruise ship jobs were a thing back when I graduated from college in 1993. I graduated with a three-year diploma from graphic design, but when I graduated jobs are hard to come by and I couldn’t find a position as a graphic designer until two years later. In those two years if I had only known about Working on a cruise ship. I could’ve done that instead of having our jobs here and there. Unfortunately it’s too late now, because I am now in my 50s. But I really love watching your videos and I know you’re giving out great advice to future crew.

I really appreciate the amount of work you are putting into making videos like these to paint a vivid pictures as to what's in store for a crew member. Your experience and insight are invaluable and has kept me afloat for the past few months trying to explore for myself. I'm sure there are more like me who has benefited from your work and for that, please allow me to forward a huge THANK YOU. Looking forward to more content with your british sharpness and professional insight.❤

Lucy ❤ what if you are a senior citizen wanting to do something different. I’ve been in banking for over 35 years, my kids are in their 30’s and living their own lives. I would love to experience working on a cruise ship. As far as job career I’ve been there done that. Why nota new journey. What advice do you have.

Zelma, in case Lucy doesn't have the time, I'd say have a look at Lucy's interview with a cruise ship accountant. She posted that video this past May, and I think it will give you good insight into the job (which should be a good fit for you). Good luck.

I think everyone out of school wants to escape the ordinary. Who wants to be ordinary at 19? But when someone starts craving meaningful relationships and a family, I think you realize any contracts aren’t going to provide that unless you are incredibly lucky.

A crew member told me recently, that there was a problem with online gambling onboard. Some crew members would blow their entire pay, come home broke, and sign up for a new contract to try again.

People say it’s a trap but also a cosy 9-5 job on land is a trap too. So I don’t know. It depends on what you want in life. I’ve never wanted children for example but I you do that’s a big factor. Also ship life gets boring too.. no time to read or create art, cook what you want. all the relationships don’t go anywhere as they are secretly married at home.

Can you work on cruise ships as a couple?
@captainjohn496 ай бұрын
Yes and no. Couples can of course work together on-board, but it is rare. The most common occurrence (although still very rare) is when they are hired together as a "team of two" for a specific contract, such as dance instructors, musicians, lecturers, promotional speakers, port/shopping ambassadors, etc. But, unless a ship has a need for TWO people to do the same job at the SAME time, it can be a long wait. Also, if you're a married couple then most cruise lines will do all they can to arrange for you to share a crew cabin, even if you were not hired "together" / not hired for the same contract, but if you're not married and not hired "together" for the same contract/same job, then you will probably not share a room. Hopefully now you understand the answer is both "yes" and "no"? Good luck to you and your spouse!

So what’s your exit strategy, Lucy?
@chunkysax7 ай бұрын
Hi Lucy I really enjoy your videos and from experience I think your perceptions are pretty right. I worked as a show band musician (sax/ woodwinds) in the late 90 s. I did several contracts for both Celebrity and Norwegian. I loved the travel and meeting lots of new people at the time- it was an adventure! The fly in the ointment was that I met my future wife in Canada around and was kind of ready to start teaching HS band in NY. My exit strategy was I chose to live a regular conventional land life as a music teacher for 21 years. I m retired now honorably and don't regret becoming an educator but I loved those younger days! Keep cruising!
