Think the one problem with keeping selection closed to New Zealand clubs only is that their peers in SA, European, and French clubs are really starting to pull ahead of them in terms of earning potential. Lets be serious these chaps have to support their families after their rugby career. Its also about getting paid top dollar as a sportsman and enjoying all the trappings like the Finn Russells and Handre Pollards. All the games amongst the top 4 teams at the World cup NZ, France, Ireland and SA were fairly tight, if these guys are playing for those clubs surely it will make sure they are up to standard for the NZ national team.

Everything you said, we already know. Most certainly is in NZ rugby interest that players are paid top dollar, so that they can support their families and be eligible for the ABs. As things stand, we cannot have both. If we let the best go to Europe or Japan and change eligibility rules for them, that would be the nail in the coffin for super rugby and all pacific nations. NZ and the pacific nations will become „fabrics“ for the european rugby market. You can kiss super rugby good bye. The question here is how we can increase our „rugby economy“ so that these guys, if money is the only issue, can stay home. I don’t care what Ardie Savea and those folks say about changing eligibility rules. Thats a very selfish argument from a position of comfort. Not all folks will be attractive for european clubs and for those staying in SR, it will be dire straits. Very dire.

@@mauroger86 Very interesting viewpoint. I'm just a couch potato rugby fan and total layman. Why will super rugby fail completely? Its sincere question just want to understand. Is there not argument for building more depth (assuming talent pipelines strong) and giving more potential players game time playing overseas especially if its going to take time to rebuild your rugby economy and thats if you build it back to what it was with current sports trends in NZ & AUS.

I was very surprised to find out recently that Charles Piatau is one of the great all time earners, up there with Pollard well ahead of Dan Carter. Bundy Aki could have been another Nonu if we had been able to keep him and Gibson Park might be our starting 9 with Cam hurt. I look at the SR empty stadiums and I wonder if SR can survive without the saffers

You can see why the boks are champions because they have players all over the world AND their sides are competitive in the URC. Gotta believe that Ardie's idea would kill Super Rugby

Fakatava is good running halfback.But his decision making is not test level. He does suffer from while line fever.Christie is reliable and he has low error rate. But he is not runner at all.He doesn’t put fear into the opposition. Perenara has the experience at test level.I don’t like his kicking game or his decision making. He suffers from white line fever too.He can be bit greedy near the line. But Perenara is test level halfback.Cortez Ratima is outstanding young halfback. Obviously Riogard is the best.Daylight is second. Christie will be starting halfback.Perenara will be on the bench.Ratima should be in the Squad. You can’t discount test experience.I really like Riogard and McKenzie as combinations. Flyhalfs will be : McKenzie,Barrett and Cameron.

Ardie Saveas argumentation is short, shallow and selfish. It proves how little he knows about how this decision would impact players that HAVE to stay in NZ. For those folks in amazing economic situations like him, its great. Now, for players staying in a competition that will lose all of its stars and deplete it from investment and interest, is dire straits. Savea, stick to playing and let the business to people that have a clue.

schadenfreude, super rugby is in trouble now that we got rid of south africa. Only thing that improved in SA in the last 4 years has been the URC.

This is why ab's lose some good player's to other countries. They should allow player's to play overseas and be available to be picked for ab's. Otherwise youngsters will go overseas play at that comp of whatever country & then become a citizen and represent that country instead of representing ab's 🤦🏽‍♂️
