In this video Bart Hanson take a look at what appears to be a bluff line, but it really is not.

In this hand the caller takes the lead betting the flop and turn with pocket fives. Suddenly, on the river, when a blank appears his opponent shoves. The front door flush draw missed but is this line really a bluff? Bart explains.

I play a lot of 1-3 and 2-5, and when I see this line, 99.5% of the time it’s not a bluff. Guy thinks his two pair are the nuts.
@DaverendeDodo
@DaverendeDodo 4 жыл бұрын
On this board, it is close to the nuts right, since a straight is unlikely, qq should have 3bet, and there aren't a lot of other 2 pairs possible. Only a set of 2's is likely to be a better hand

Are there players at these levels that can fold any queens? If the impression that river shoves are never bluffs is so pervasive, it seems like getting to more rivers then shoving would be profitable.

If people are stacking off with 4th pair (like the hero in this video) 2 pair is the nuts in those games

not sure i get this 'new' thinking of betting smaller for protection...how is it protection if you are giving your opponents the correct price for their draws? (serious question by the way...)

@@Gos1234567 well if most people are willing to pay wildly too much to draw, i'd think that would reward betting more, not less.... i'll go out on a limb and say he means something along the lines of "when betting for protection against villain's whole range, since he will mostly have a mix of draws and smaller pairs as well as some air, you can get away with betting smaller on average because you will fold out the air and small pairs more easily...." what do you think about thiat?
@jambasket211
@jambasket211 4 жыл бұрын
Bruce M. Even a relatively small bet of 1/3 pot lays 4:1, which isn’t giving draws a favorable price. However, implied odds can make up the difference. I think your later comment is somewhat correct-laying a price to the entire range rather than focusing strictly on the draws. However, not all small pairs, or A and K high hands should be folding to this sizing, but they might. In this case with 55, I think folding overcards that don’t have a BDFD/straight draw is the focus-so like 98hh, JThh, A7hh, etc. But the key is that you don’t narrow your opponent’s range so much as to create a significant equity deficit for the remaining streets. Also an overlooked aspect of using these small protection bets is the ability to play the later streets with wider ranges. Many players won’t be used to this scenario and may cause themselves problems as they charter unknown territory.

@@Gos1234567 in the games i play in (don't ask! lol) people are not generally doing math and often call the larger sizing with draws, many pairs, even unpaired ace hands, so i'll probably keep making them big for now, but it does all make sense. i have been sizing down a little with overpairs and TPTK hands a little bit lately, but hands like KT on T94 i go ahead and fire pretty big still..too many bad cards can come out, for one thing. so many variables, eh? hard to make blanket statements

Hero couldn't have played this hand any worse. Betting the flop is eh but why is he betting the turn? Why is he putting more money into the pot with a marginal hand especially when he is last to act and could have just checked? And then calling that river jam because he was confused is just so bad. Bart, you're too nice to this fish. The value in small pairs like this is trying to flop a set and getting out of there multiway when you don't hit. Completely avoidable spot where Hero went broke for no good reason.

1. I would have folded 55 preflop in this situation. Two others in the pot are too many. Any card above a 5 is a potential threat. Hero is not getting the right price to call the preflop raise. 2. After the River the Beluga Theorm comes to effect. Aggression after the River is most often for value.
