Small holders and hobby famers need to take the welfare of their livestock seriously. One of the most important skills in sheep husbandry is crutching. Done correctly and at the right time, crutching can prevent fly strike and ensure the welfare of your sheep. John Gilligan, a shearer and property maintenance contractor takes us through the process step by step using simple and cheap tools everyone can use easily. We also discuss the timing and routine of crutching in the seasonal cycle of your farm.

@@FarmLearningTim That would be awesome, even if its just taking the scraps off the "shedding" sheep (a lot of small landholders go for those)

Tim - any chance of a tour of how your shearing shed is constructed - we dont get to see them much here in the UK - most of our shearing is done with gangs with portable shearing trailers.

Excelling video Tim, got a lot from it. You wouldn't happen to have any info coming up on running watering troughs from a single water source (bore or tank) would you? :P

@@FarmLearningTim bit of a hornet's nest, lots of options. Look forward to something coming up one day, definitely something I'm keen on looking at. My local ag store has been pretty average thus far.

I’m a smallholder that’s just started shearing his own sheep. When I start I put the front/right leg behind my right knee/bum cheek, however when you start dagging you place the ewe’s front/left leg behind your left knee/bum cheek. Why? Is this optional? Is it different for right vs left handlers. Doing my ewes next week pre-tupping. Thanks for the video. Philip

Hi mate. It’s a left handed right handed thing. Tucking the left opens up for right handed blows

You should be telling people that the shears straight out of the shop, won’t cut at all, that they need to be set, ground on a sandstone and sharpened, the set is most important and not easily achieved by an amateur
