Lengthening a drill bit
History:
How to lengthen a drill bit
The rod that we use must be of equal thickness or smaller than the drill bit
We will reduce the drill bit and rod as I show below
Center the drill and rod, do it by eye.
Solder a point and check that it is well centered
We will correct and apply continuous points of welding
The drill bit will not be perfect ...
This technique does not guarantee the durability of the drill bit,
The drill bit will break with relative ease (By welding)
The weld must be lowered a little below the thickness of the drill bit
The test of fire
If the rod and drill bit are of the same thickness, with an angular profile is made well

Exactly what I was thinking. But I would have made a couple of tack welds, then out of the angle iron weld it completely, then grind the weld smooth. Should be lots stronger, and faster to do than his job.

I did something like this to drill through a 10 foot section of wall with a piece of bar. Afterwards I welded two threaded rods to the end and tightened the wall up to secure it

With all of that grinding you could have made two drill bits on a blank piece of steel.

it doesnt work for needing to drill through stuff like this, but if you just need to extend the drill bit because it's a tight space and the drill simply wont fit there but the drill bit itself is deep enough I like to thread the end of the drill bit then tap a slightly larger bar. thread them together then weld a ring around the top. never had a single one break.

Unless you have a machine shop this is pretty hard to do. Or is it? I got an idea. A simple grinding pin and strong glue could do the job. What do you think?

I've lengthened bits for years but was never lazy about it like this , use or make a precision jig for crying out loud. The best way is to weld the two pieces right on a lathe that way no wobble and you can turn the over weld off in a few passes.

Being an Electrician for many years I've lengthened drill bits many times, I always used a piece of angle iron for a jig to lay them in after grinding the taper of joining ends and tacked welded then hammered straight as I added more weld. I never had the luxury of lots of time and a lathe on the job site. Also when using these lengthened bits one must continually pull the bit out of the hole to clean out the flutes or you can twist off the weld.

Even better is to drill a hole to the extension, then turn down the shank of the drill and silver solder them together. Makes for a stronger joint, doesn't bend crooked like in welding and you can always remove the drill and replace it.

Mira, lo primero es asegurar que la amoladora no se mueva tanto y segundo, usa una varilla roscada de diametro inferior, perno acoplador roscado y hazle rosca a la broca del diametro de la varilla y la alargas o acortas sin tantos problemas. La polvora hace años que esta inventada.

With all those tools and such a big workshop I'm surprised you don't already have a long drill bit. The people who need a long drill bit more than likely won't have all those tools!!! If they did have all those tools then no doubt they'll have a long drill bit too! Easier and cheaper to buy one !

Buy a tungsten carbide insert and weld it to the tip of a Steel bar.

Drill bit is high carbon steel. The weld will harden it locally. It will break off real soon. Aneal the area you welded by heating it locally red and letting it cool. Don’t aneal the twist drill keep it cool.

You really don't just "go buy a longer drill bit" if you need something of 100D or longer. And still, at 20D you start getting into the "no one has it" category without using a gun drill.

Me he atrevido a ver el video hasta el final, haber empezado por el final y no tendrias tantas criticas. Tu sistema tiene un grave problema cuando se trata de piezas macizas, la viruta no sale, prueba el sistema que te he dicho yo y veras que es infalible, siempre que uses un diametro inferior a la broca.
