The scene when Mary goes blind has haunted me since I saw it as a child!! So chilling!! What an amazing performance!!

I love how they called the scene where Mary lost her sight "that scene". If you know Little House, you know "that scene". I cried for ten straight minutes and couldn't stop!

I love that Mr. Edwards calls Laura "half pint" too. That's her pa's nickname for her, so it shows how close the two characters are!

Pa was the dad we all secretly wanted as ours

I remember breaking down in tears when Mary lost her sight. I always looked up to her and just seeing her scream in utter terror just tore me apart. I love Mary as a character and Melissa Sue Anderson plays her perfectly.

The one where the dad is holding his dead son in his arms and says" days like this are made for fishing,not school" gets me every time

This show started off as fun and childlike and joyous. It progressively began to get darker and darker to the last episode, I feel like sometimes that’s how life works. Nonetheless this show is my childhood and I love it to this day and I'm only 22 years old. Edit: However there were some characters n the show that not a lot of people here have commented about. Yes, Mary and Charles have won our hearts because of the things happening to them but hardly anyone here commented about Caroline, which I'm really shocked about. She, in my opinion is one of the strongest woman I know, next to my own mother. She persevered through everything with Charles, and you could tell her family was her life and she would never let that go, and that faith definitely carried her through the really tough moments. Another character i'd like to mention is Albert. He started off as a child beggar whose biologically father was an abuser and abused him throughout his childhood. Him getting adopted by Charles and Laura finally accepting him as her brother during the cow fair episode (Fagin) was incredibly emotional. And on top of that, he went through a lot other than childhood abuse. He lost the love of his life, Sylvia to a rapist and he got addicted to morphine and nearly almost died. The final season for some reason made it seemed like he was dying, but Laura said he went on to become the town's doctor because that was his dream goal was to be a doctor.

I'm a 61-year-old man. Growing up, in my teens, I was aware of 'Little House on the Prairie'. But I never watch it because it was not the "cool" show for a teenage boy to watch! I stumbled on the pilot here on KZfaq a few days ago. Just out of curiosity of its reputation of excellence, I watch it. Now I am hooked! I am half way through the first season over this weekend. I truly enjoy it. 👍

Michael Landon just exuded a sense of wonder and faith. It was not just acting. Whenever he was on screen, his soul shone through.

I watched that episode when Mary lost her sight originally when it aired, and it was gut wrenching then as seeing it now. This scene alone earned Melissa Sue an Emmy nomination for BSA in Drama.

I could add a few more. Alice Garvey pounding on the window with the baby while the house is burning down. Still freaks me out to this day. When Adam said "I can see" and he looks at Mary for the first time. When Sylvia fell off the ladder then died with Albert by her side. When the little girl drowned in the lake and the mother of that child kidnapped Laura. When the widow died and her 3 children were in the room with her as the rain is pouring outside, so sad. Mary waking up and saying she can't see, that got me. Not being able to see Mrs. Olsen at the end of the show when they blew up the mercantile. When Percival told Nellie she was pretty. I could go on. Lots of drama in 'Walnut Grove. :)

How do actors cry at the drop of a hat like that? Mary was the most convincing crier through the years with sad and happy tears. She always had me crying along with her.

This will sound silly and trivial, but Laura's relationship with Bandit, right after Jack died, tore at my heart. When she finally accepted him, I cried my eyes out.

I adored Michael Landon. He was such a talented actor, writer, director. What a great loss.

I just loved Michael Landon's heart. He venerated wholesomeness and preserved its legacy in his shows. I loved the man because of his work. And his friend Victor French who worked with him . That's two wonderful souls and I cherish that.

I was a child in Indonesia in the late 1970s. I remember that after dinner, subtitled episodes of 'Little House on the Prairie' would air on TV. I later moved to Europe and the US but returned to Indonesia in the late 1990s. And after dinner, they still aired episodes of 'Little House on the Prairie"! Good memories.

The Mary goes blind scene. I don’t know which is worse. The scene in the loft where she wakes up blind or the scene by the creek where Pa has to tell her she is GOING blind. The realization as she lets it sink in. Brutal.

I just recently started to watch ‘ Little House ‘ after work. I would burst into tears so often that my husband would come into the room to see what was the matter. Long story short, now we both watch ‘ Little House! We pass the Kleenex cause ‘ Little House will make you cry!

Pa reminds me of my daddy. Such a hard worker, loving husband and father. A God fearing man led by the Holy Spirit but don't cross him. Loved and respected by everyone who knew him! ❤

Karen Grassle was my favorite one on the series. The Caroline Ingalls character was very sensitive and loving, but was also firm and assertive when she had to be. She was the mother that most of us probably didn’t have but desperately needed. Will never forget the finale when she picked up the rifle and scared off Lassiter and his goons! The first time I saw that as a kid, I actually cheered and yelled, YAY, MA! Karen was such an amazingly talented actress!

I sob every time I see the episode with young Solomon. The unjust treatment his people faced. 😢 All that little boy wanted was an education to make something of himself. To be a doctor. Seeing him say goodbye at the school destroys me every time.

The scene where Mary goes blind always gets to me. Both Mary & Laura grew up a lot after that & I liked the series a little more after that. Laura & MR Edwards relationship was awesome. They were very best friends !!

When Mr Edwards adopted Patricia Neal’s children and they do that “Remember Me with smiles and laughter” voiceover gets me every time.

This is truly one of the greatest shows of all time. There are countless episodes that will leave you in tears....roughly 1 out of every three. When watching the opening credits, if it was both written and directed by Michael Landon, there is a very good chance the tears will be a flowing

What about when Albert told Mary he didn’t mean it when she was crying out for her baby? Or when Alice was breaking the window in fire? One seems that made me so mad was when those thugs wouldn’t let Caroline pass and take started crying when Charles asked her what was wrong. He was a real man the way he reacted!

The saddest part must had been when Charles said goodbye to his home ONE FINAL LAST TIME and seeing what he had inscribed his and Caroline’s initials letters by the fire that made me cry 😭 so much it was such a HEARTBREAKING SCENE!!!!!!!

They should have had the episode where Pa Ingalls is with Albert as he goes thru Morphine withdrawal. ☹

I have a bunch more: Albert's morphine addiction James getting shot when putting some birthday money in the bank Laura not accepting Bandit The young student at the blind school comforting Mary after she miscarries Albert bringing Mary a music box after the fire incident and she screams histerically, then he screams "I DIDNT MEAN IT" and runs out James and Cassandra's parents' wagon crash Charles and laura taking Laura's friend to see the ocean after he's diagnosed with leukemia Charles giving this young man a new shirt as a present for good work, only for him to tear it up as it reminded him of his abusive father

Wow this show was more dramatic by far than most 70s family shows. Such good writing and acting. I cry watching more LHOTP episodes than any other TV show before or after.

That scene with Mary still reaches into my soul! I just woke up and I’m crying. Lol

I remember being a child and my grandmother had every episode recorded. I loved the show so much. Charles is such an amazing father. And Michael Landon did such an amazing job with showing that it's okay for men to cry. A lesson that has been hard for society to grasp. But he did a beautiful job with it. Watching this now as an adult, I have so much more understanding and appreciation for it. And it makes me cry like a little baby. Such a great show, for men, women and children

Always amazed at how good the child actors were!

They missed the one where Cassandra and James lost their parents. That was a real tear jerker. They also missed when the Sanderson children lost their mother and were going to be adopted separately, not to mention when they had the burial scene. This show often had scenes that made me cry no matter how strong I wanted to pretend to be.

When Mary is kicked in the stomach by the new horse and has to have an operation in the episode "To Live in Fear Part 1". When Charles goes to the church and tries to make an offering, and Laura comes up and says it's a special donation for Mary, I have to bite back tears every time even though I know that scene is coming up.

I never saw my father cry and then I saw Charles showing emotions as father. I was shook as kid. So basically LHOTP learned me that man cry to. - Also I still wanna marry Adam Kendall after so many years.

Beautiful show. Never fails to fill me with hope and love. People these days are do disconnected and uncaring. Never fails to convey messages of how to live a life with honor, decency and integrity. If it never ever won an award....it should've. Funny thing, I absolutely couldn't STAND Nellie and Mrs. Olsen, but the show would have been nothing without them. They added the dynamic that is needed to round out this show. Superb acting by all! Wonderful show! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Little House On The Prairie will always be my favorite show. Ever since I was a kid, this show is what made my days! But boy... I’ve never cried harder because of a show.

I have fallen in love with this show through reruns. Hard to watch many episodes without shedding a few tears.

I miss Michael Landon very much, such a great actor and director. And that was the perfect cast... No wonder why the show endlessly gets replayed on tv.

IMO the greatest series of all time that sometimes took a trip down the Oregon Trail.

I strongly believe that Look Back to Yesterday should have been put on this list. Whenever i watch that movie I cry my eyes out. It is one of the most heart-wrenching episodes of the seasons. I can even cry just thinking about it.

No 1 for me is when they blew up Walnut Grove, and the series ended. Also when Charles and Mr Edwards were looking for a runaway Laura, and Charles broke down crying when it seemed hopeless finding her. When Albert was about to be taken away from the Ingalls'. When Charles asked Mr Edwards to forgive him after having given up on their friendship. Oh, there are many!

There wasn't one episode of this series where I didn't cry. Sometimes tears of joy because each episode teaches you something about yourself and about life. I love this show and I love Michael Landon for giving us this to always remember him by. Thanks Michael ❤️
