Crystal Red Shrimp Hunted by Damselfly Larvae in Freshwater Aquarium

We use an exterior water-butt to hold water ready for our caridina shrimp aquarium water changes, without realising we had inadvertently added damselfly larvae to several of our Crystal Red and Bloody Mary shrimp caridina shrimp aquariums. Having never seen one underwater before it took a while for us to figure out what they were and how they found their way into our aquariums. For the past several weeks, we were finding dead shrimp and were not able to pinpoint the cause as water parameters were correct until we spotted the problem which has now been resolved :) #crystalredshrimp #shrimpers #caridinashrimp

To date I've pulled close to 40 damselflies and a handful of dragon nymphs out of my 10 gallon shrimp tank. They hatched out of a mass of locally collected pennywort. After collecting a dozen I started taking pics and keeping count, I NEVER expected to have this many. I can't imagine what sort of horror movie must've been playing out in that tank every night. On a positive note, I now have a prosperous colony with tons of shrimplets whereas before I couldn't understand why no shrimplets were surviving.

Ahh yes they are nasty buggers! Glad to hear you figured out the problem and solved it buddy, had never seen it happen in any tank before i guess because this was our first shrimp only aquarium and the fish would have normally cleared them out! Thanks for sharing your experience ❤️

Wow that's a big one! We just found a little damselfly nymph in our 20 gallon and managed to get it out! Gonna try and keep it alive in another container, they're really fascinating!

We just found another ironically in the same aquarium almost a year to the day in our new video here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7doYLKW3bG2kaM.html. Yea they are fascinating just a tad annoying if found with shrimp, best of luck keeping it alive, should be interesting :)

Are they really dangerous for shrimps? I saw one of those in my tank, probably came with some mosquito larvae I fed to the fish. Just one of them can harm a whole population? They prey on adults too?
@Aquadiction
@Aquadiction 3 жыл бұрын
hi Davide, i guess it depends how many shrimp you have and how many larvae, they will probably take about an adult shrimp per day so if you have a lot you may not notice a difference to the population if you have a few you may see a dent in the population very soon! i guess get them out as soon as you see them, they are a pain! best of luck with your shrimp keeping regardless dude and thanks for the question 👍🏼👍🏼

I saw two of these. I'm so sad as my juvie shrimp have been missing 😕 I've had it in the tank for about a month, and I didn't know what it was. I thought it was a reject shrimp. So angry to find out theyve been eating my babies

@@Aquadiction I keep corydoras, pearl danios and a honey gourami. I'm a little concerned about the danios as they are tiny! but I managed to kill 3 Damselflies and haven't seen any for a while. Hopefully, there aren't much left :/ Lol. Do they reproduce fast?
@Aquadiction
@Aquadiction 3 жыл бұрын
@@fishman1793 You should be okay with Danios as they are fast top-level fish and the Damselflies are very slow ambush predators on the bottom of the aquarium. I THINK danios are also too large for a Damselflie to take TBH. If you have dragonfly nymphs though it would be a different story as these get ALOT bigger. In terms of breeding the nymphs, can't reproduce until they have grown into flies and left the water, so don't worry about that! Hope that helps a little :)
