Join our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan for people who love and support our veterans, service members, and their families. It has info on a significant event in military and/or intel history, a funny military joke, an update on a current event I'm following, something I'm doing that week in my life, a book I'm reading, a look at an upcoming interview, a reflection on a past episode and more!
Today we hear the Combat Story of Travis Norby, who commanded a mechanized infantry company in Iraq early in the war.
[NOTE: We're launching on Patreon NEXT WEEK. Register to get notified at www.combatstory.com/patreon]
Travis is a long-time Combat Story listener who reached out to see if his non-special ops story would be worth our listener’s time. As many of our most dedicated listeners know, as you write to me about this, we get many requests to share the stories of conventional soldiers and officers and what life was like for them while the Tier 1 and 2 units were running raids at night.
This combat story delivers on what I believe is a very common experience for so many infantry officers in terms of how you lose soldiers and still show up, how you motivate people to keep going in the face of unending days of attacks, and how you lead with the soldier in mind and not your own career advancement.
Travis’ stories of leadership and loss give us unique insight into the world of an Infantry officer fighting in the post-9/11 era and I hope you enjoy this raw and very real Combat Story as much as we did.

Longtime fan of this channel here. Def appreciate you talking to some conventional folks. A lot of similar channels are SOF-heavy and I can understand how it can alienate vets who saw just as much action but don’t have cool guy badges. It’d be cool if you if you maybe started doing interviews with vets from different types of units. Like an Airborne infantry (e.g. 82nd or 173rd) episode. A Stryker episode. A Marine MEU episode. A Navy EOD episode. It would help diversify and represent more than just 5% of combat vets.

As a former soldier in 2BCT/2ID this story really hits home. It was my first deployment, and into the hornets nest, also one of the most f-ed up. The BCT as a whole, had no idea what they were in for. Many were so ill equipped mentally for a real enemy, many in the leadership never left the mentality we had left Korea.

Guarantee he is talking about Harold Coyles Team Yankee and sequels. We were all on those novels along with Dan Browns books and shocking i wound up Cav.. lol. Glad to see a line Company guy. I agree that Shrek is a Demi God but have found myself in conversations with an unnamed Tier 1 type that may have been Navy and all he did was belittle any combat that wasn't HVT raid type stuff and last I checked when a line company soldier was shot he lost his life the same way an "operator" did. Plenty of Armor Cav and Infantry guys gave the ultimate sacrifice along with plenty of support personnel. Cant belittle your time in a mech infantry company as the lowly 3/6 infantry 5th ID at Ft Polk got to go to Panama with the 82nd so even the lowly got lucky once and awhile then 2nd ACR in the Gulf wasnt bad at all. Thanks for highlighting the "normal" soldiers plight. Oh and by the way 24 months at Ft Polk wasn't bad if you like to fish and hunt otherwise it would be torture

Great episode. Thank you for giving us "regular" soldiers a chance to tell stories as well. So, many channels focus solely on operators. Not knocking on that as I looked up to those guys as heros when I was a young 11B paratrooper. Still look up to those guys. The Ranger school thing is a big deal for sure with Infantry officers. It was a big deal to us younger enlisted back in the day as well. If we saw an LT without a tab we immediatly questioned his leadership. I remember when I was at my first duty station in Korea ( 1/503 INF) there were some LTs that were wearing tabs and it was found out they did not actually earn them. Not good! Then when I got to the 82nd, all officers and E5 and up better have a tab. We were a pretty good unit back when I was in Korea. Well, et least our company. It would have been rough deploying from there though. Soldiers were constantly coming and going due to it being a 1 year tour. As an former Infantryman, hearing an offcier say he is the most armorer Infantry officer is scary! LOL

Ryan, A quick suggestion - Their is a PHENOMENAL Vietnam war novel out there called "Matterhorn", written by a Rhodes scholar named Karl Marlantes. Karl won the Navy Cross in Vietnam as a Marine platoon commander and his novel is a loose (close?) interpretation of his tour & the battle in which his actions won him the Navy Cross. Phenomenal book, and the guy is also a great interview.
