Italian Long Sword: www.coldsteel.com/italian-lon...
Italian Dagger: www.coldsteel.com/italian-dag...
The Long Sword was arguably the most versatile and devastatingly effective weapon of its time and it remained popular for almost three centuries. This, undoubtedly, was because it really worked!
Modeled on the Italian concept of Long Sword design, our modern interpretation of this classic blade slightly favors thrusting attacks, however, its twin edges are astonishingly effective too, and can deliver some downright ferocious cuts that put many a sword to shame.
Its long blade offers the reach and leverage for a powerful thrust, as well as brutally effective cutting and chopping strokes, and the sharp double edges enable the wielder to strike quickly and potently from an array of angles at great speed.
The Italian Longswords long upturned cross guard will hook, trap and entangle with ease, catching an opponent's sword, allowing a skilled exponent of the Long Sword time to counter or work their advantage from the bind. It also acts as a brutally effective weapon it its own right in extreme close range as a hooking, ripping and bludgeoning tool.
The attractive fish tail pommel acts as an excellent counter weight. This serves several useful purposes. It keeps a healthy percentage of the swords weight back by the users rear hand when using two handed techniques, allowing them to quickly and deftly "steer" the Long Sword at dazzling speed. It also makes the Long Sword light and well balanced enough to use one handed -- keeping the other hand free to hold a shield, buckler or dagger...
With this in mind, we are proud to also offer a handsome companion dagger for the Long Sword. Scaled down in size but almost identical in appearance, its sharply tapered, double edged blade slightly favors attacks with the point over the edge and is stiff and strong enough to parry any sword.

butted mail, weak.
@HarryFlashmanVC
@HarryFlashmanVC 8 жыл бұрын
It is butted mail .. However long swords like this were a battlefield weapon from 1350-1550 the tape on them is designed to thrust through mail. When fighting in harness the target areas are those where there is no plate armour, so the armpit, the groin, the back of the legs and arms, down the inside of the gauntlet etc. There is a (wrong) assumption that by 1450 swords had disappeared and hammers and maces were the hand weapons. Now I own 100% functional plate harness and the armour of this period is designed to spill blows from concussive strikes unless you hit the surface as damn close as to 90 degrees as possible. TV and film gives people the assumption that plate was light and thin, it most certainly is not, my armour is 1.4mm to 2mm thick articulated steel. You can strike it with a war hammer spike but 8/10 it won't pierce or even dent it unless you put your entire body behind the blow. In the meantime, the chap with the sword would have stuck you in the goodies or armpit. Whe using a longsword armoured a thrust to mail is carried out by grasping the blade with the weaker hand about half way up the grip being similar to a spear or bayonet thrust. The cold steel Italian longsword, which I own, is a formidable weapon, fast and deadly , it's balance is a tad too nose heavy , the hanwei tinker has better balance for a longsword and I am not a fan of the fluted pommel, which is uncomfortable without gauntlets, in longsword techniques, whether fiorli, Lichtenauer or English, the pommel is gripped with the weaker hand to move the point and to act as a cutting lever, one of the reasons why the longsword is such a fast weapon. In the day these swords were used, up armoured, for judicial duels on mainland Europe (except France) it must have been quite terrifying as the majority of the strikes would essentially slice you to bits unless you evaded or parried. Men like Fiorli made their living from coaching people to survive and win these duels. I own several sharp swords including Japanese and a 1792 pattern British sabre, one of the most formidable cutting tools of all time, however, it is the cold steel longsword I keep locked in a rifle case, it is simply too dangerous to allow anyone who has no longsword training to handle, the length, speed and sharpness of the sword catches people out, they can't help waving it around and have no awareness of where the tip is . The other reason is because it is double edged which means the wielder needs to be very careful indeed. If you want to get into longsword technique I would recommend a practical blunt blade like the hanwei tinker before purchasing a sharp bladed sword. The tinker comes with both blunt and sharp blades and has a better balance than the cold steel sword but in a zombie to jihadi attack it would be the cold steel one I reached for, if it were an attack of a group of 15th Knights I'd reach for the tinker sharp , that is if I was unable to run away!

These cuts would be a lot more impressive if you used proper technique all the time. One of the guys seems to know what he's doing and consistently ends in a guard and has nice clean cuts. The guy at 0:20 cuts with the middle of the dang blade and seems to just be swinging for the fences with no regard for technique. His cuts snag and get stuck in things (looks like because he's twisting his wrist) and are just not very nice looking. Compare to 0:12, 1:34, or 2:20. He's in control, his cuts are clean, and he doesn't need to pause or wind up between cuts (or take a run-up).

Cold steel are often accused of selling over priced big knives. This is a fair criticism of some of their work, not, however this particular sword. It is a proper sword wit a diamond profile, the balance is a bit out but not too bad and I no fan of the fluted pommel as my longsword technique uses the pommel as a grip but for the money and for a screw tang sword it is remarkably good value.

For years we have tried quality controlling these issues out, but we are now getting close to 100% of them with some kind of issue. Cold Steel does not consider these problems, so we will no longer try to weed them out. Please keep this in mind when ordering. These issues can not be considered defects, it is simply the quality level Cold Steel provides for this product. from a retailer come on, get it together

I'd love to add this to my collection but the prices in the UK are so much higher, It would be cheaper to import one from the states but alas customs in the UK have a habit of seizing items although they're perfectly legal.
