Andrew D.Kaufman talks about his book, Give “War and Peace” a Chance: Tolstoyan Wisdom for Troubled Times, in which he argues that we can learn a lot about living through troubled times, courage, and family from Tolstoy’s 1,500-page book about the Napoleanic wars. This event was held at Politics and Prose Bookstore in Washington, D.C. I finished War and Peace a few days ago. It left an indelible impression on me and I hope to read it again before I die. I envy Prof. Kaufman his scholarly study of a such a wonderful novel!

Reading the novel in Russian and reading your book--the ultimate combination. Thank you so much for fighting the good fight and bringing this book into focus at a time we need it!

What a brilliant talk! I'm glad the author does not see this as a substitute for our spiritual tomes and growth, but it does show how we are all trapped in some way, perceived or real, and the book contemporizes these struggles.

When he got to the Potato scene my throat choked. And that choke weight lurks in my throat and always makes itself felt whenever I encounter experiences that stir a spiritual feeling in me

Rupture: this is what we are experiencing in Europe over the differences between the past before Feb. 24, and the prospects of the future. We are going to be exceptionally different after the storm that is gathering on the horizon.

I find the movie by the Russian director is a new experience for me by the actions of President Putin. Surely a new novel is being written about him.

Nitpicking rocks though, I've waited 'til the epilogue for N. Rostov to relapse, but nope, it was just an once-off thing, Dholokov ripped the airily young knight off alright, but after that, he did only touch cards again to play Patience - no addiction.

Just like an American academic to read Tolstoy as his own personal psychotherapist, and pen a book about it. You won't learn anything about War and Peace here but platitudes, but a bit too much about Prof. Kaufman.

Kind of the point of reading, no? To understand, reflect, to learn through empathy and apply those lesson to yourself; to grow. If not, good for you, your reason has different meaning. That’s reading. It’s personal.
