I am lucky enough to be one of of the last Yardmasters that got to work at the Kayne Avenue Yard Tower. I loved working that job!!

I'm not surprised, there's almost no customers except the Nashville & Western exchange. I can remember when the Tennessean Newspaper would get boxcars full of paper rolls, and with the closure of Kayne street yard that part of history. Twenty two years ago they use to pull in a local break it down and fill up the yard rail cars going all over the city. The long arm of precision railroading has come to Nashville. Now they pull the train to what ever industrial area. Just a few days ago I saw on Google maps where CSX now operates a small office at end of an industrial section of west Nashville. It's easy to find on Google and the irony of this is that they use to keep a pair of SW1500 switch engines 44 years ago. I grew up here in Nashville and will probably leave the world when the time comes so if you ever have any historical questions I would be glad answer them. Did you know there use to be a diamond crossing near Berry Hill road and Franklin road where the L&N crossed the Tennessee Central? The industrial now Tech park off Charlotte Avenue once was the inbound yard for the Nashville and Chattanooga & St. Louis Railroad complete with engine shops, roundhouse, icing facilities back in the day. The outbound yard was where Kayne street and Union Statkon are today. That's why there are viaduct there opposed to roadways. I can remember the rail yard extending under the then Baptist Sunday School Board of course that's all gone. I could go on but, I won't.

@@RustyBoxcar I apologize for the desertion. There’s a lot of history in that area. It just like there’s a lot of people who ride the Star every day without realizing that the rails use to switch where the ticket station is with one track going out onto a wharf at the edge of the river. The other track paralleled the back of the buildings on 1st avenue. The Tennessee Central delivered to and picked up from businesses along 2nd and 3rd avenues. There were a bunch of switches that allowed for boxcar deliveries around lower Broadway. If you ever want to collaborate on the history of railroading around Nashville I can help.

I truly wish that Nashville had better transportation planning because if we did our own city trains, and used the existing rail infrastructure, we could have a killer train system. I’ve been on the city bus and going from West Nashville all the way over to Hermitage/ Donelson takes super long. Though on the East side of the city, we have a train, it’s just not super effective unless you are trying to get to the stadium

This would make a nice depot for a light rail system. I've noticed on maps that the twisting Cumberland river and lack of bridges or tunnels, must make it difficult to develop a good network of bus routes. Light rail on narrow bridges could really connect up the various suburbs with the city centre.

Actually Nashville has a very good and efficient bus system. The city was developed along macadamia turnpike that still dominate as transport corridors. The bus system follows these just as the stagecoach used to in the 19th century. What is really needed is a better system to connect to neighboring municipalities.

"Not Used"? The railroad runs 24hrs a day, so just because you don't see a train there at noon, doesn't mean there won't be a mile long train there at midnight-3am. They've already torn up most of the old yard, but this is a yard for through-trains, where they can switch crews, so they don't need a lot of sidings. The BIG RR yard is down near Melrose: the Radner Yards (plural) are over SEVEN MILES LONG. There used to be another yard up in Madison, near Amqui, but most of that track has also been taken up. And yes, if I've paid a million dollars for a tiny 900sq ft CONDO down there, I'd like it if the real estate agent had bothered to tell me that the FULL NAME of "The Gulch" WAS RAILROAD GULCH! It's been there since the Civil War and not going away any time soon. 🚂🚂🚂🚂!!!!

Nicely done; video quality and narration are excellent. It’s such a pity that the Class Ones have squandered so much carload traffic over the past 60 years. Technology improvements, mergers, and other factors of course will render some facilities obsolete, but here what was once a bustling facility serving the area’s industries is being torn out because all that traffic has vanished. There’s no reason for the yard to exist.

I use to live in Galesburg and even did the San Francisco Zepher with my family when I was 12. Is the yard there in galesburg still considered one of the largest? Funny this came up. My grandfather loved trains. He took me to the Strasbourg Railroad.

Makes sense that CSX would rip this yard out, its original use was for Union station(passenger terminal with the clocktower). And also for Cummins station, a freight depot, the huge 4 or 5 story red brick building that is now offices. There hasn't been passenger service in Nashville since the 1960's I think, Union Station was turned into a hotel back in the 80's.

I think Amtrak lasted in Nashville until 1978. This land was the L&N stockyard originally. South End tower was across the mains next to the Cannery.

My father had a studio rented in Cummins Station(that redish building to the right) in the late 90s. Nashville was a ghost town in some places. This area especially. We werent allowed to play outside because the large amount of homeless & drug use in the abandonded building that were all over the gulch. This place remained pretty vacant / undesireable until about 2008 to 2010ish. Another fun fact. The circus used to unload elephants here and walk them down the tracks.

I wish PSC Metals would develop the land on the East Bank of the Cumberland into something other than that ridiculous eye sore. Recycling and scrap metal can be relocated anywhere, yet they continue to allow that area to junk up the beautiful downtown that is evolving. What the hell is their problem?

That is all CSX is about is real estate. They are more a real estate company then a railroad. They want nothing to do with local industries. CSX is all about PSR ,one man crews and going over the road with intermodal. I worked for them for 13th years and it was like a prison sentence. They just out and out suck !!!
