It's a "new typology" like Duchamp's urinal. It's like his Maison Bordeaux - a giant slab of concrete ego perched over you balanced only by a thin cable. Leaks, cracks... it will not age well. When some Eurotrash turtleneck pinko starts babbling about communists having the real vision (After he raked in the bucks from Prada) and NYC not being cool enough for the Koolhaas Ground Zero vision (a postmodernist monstrosity I'm sure it would've been, like the metal amoeba Gehry had planned for the South Street Seaport that the Guggeheim mercifully abandoned) - what did his idol Le Cobrbusier call the city? A "tragic hedgehog"? Thank God Paris denied that ego from destroying the city w/ his Voison Plan. That's why these massive egos take to communism - they want top down control and big propaganda statements. Though Koolhaas has it utterly wrong on China. Google a shot of the 2010 China National Highway 110 traffic jam - it makes the GWB at rush hour look like the countryside. The Chicoms could give a damn about his Euro bullshit too when it comes to "green" and "sustainability." Beijing is shrouded in smog, the Red Mandarins love that coal and not in the regulatory clean-air way Americans do. The pictures of his twisted opus to utopia in that communist smog are delicious. Rem's Red Arch-de-Triomphe, predictably, went way, way over budget, it's over a billion dollars. Rents were so high the very occupants it was designed for did not even move in for years. Some firecrackers nearly burned the thing down. We don't know for sure how safe it is either, it's not like the Mandarins don't cut corners. It was a tremendous waste of steel to craft this nonsense too, that has been well-documented. Meanwhile, Chinese out in the provinces live in caves and eat ratmeat and rice. But if you want an omelet... If it gets Tiananmen Square nasty in Hong Kong one day, and the live TV feed suddenly cuts away to a ballet, the Chinese will have the European slick-talking "theorist" to thank for their new Ministry of Information. You almost feel sorry for them. Why not use Chinese architects? It's like their disgusting Bird Nest Stadium (now an empty shell), designed by some German firm, Herzog & de Meuron... they're hypnotized with Europeans. Europeans gave them Marxism! Koolhaas went on a Tour de France of Asiatic communist cocksucking too, this is how architecture is done! Pooh-pooh Amereekans! Then came the ghost cities.
