Cub Crafters this week rolled out a new airplane. It's a Part 23 certified aircraft called the XCub, which the company says takes the Cub idea to the ultra level, with fast cruising speed and luxury interior. AVweb traveled to Yakima, Washington to fly the new entry.

A big part of what makes the cub such a beauty for me personally is the simplicity. This is cool too, I'm sure plenty will sell. But i'll take a standard cub and save the $200,000 :)

Beautiful Aeroplane. Would you have picked up any more airspeed if the spinner was blended better to the cowl on the upper side?

This is a beautiful aircraft with amazing performance. As a retired aeronautical engineer from Piper Aircraft and Learjet, I can see where a lot of thought has been given to the aerodynamics of the airframe. I realize that it can be quite expensive to certify the airplane to FAR Part 23, but this cost has to be absorbed partially by other means than the buyer. I would really love to see this aircraft on the active market at a lower cost.

They can't drop the price by too much , it would end up being cheaper than their non-certified offerings. Hahaha!

I know this video is a few years old, but as the plane is now part of Microsoft Flight Simulator - and aspires the position of favourite for me - I have an honest question: With all the mod cons, like even the G3X and autopilot, what is the logic of having a fuel flow valve that has to be manually switched in flight between the wingtanks for balance? Is there an advantage over the 'uaual' 4-way (left/both/right/OFF) valve?

Lotta airplanes you could get for that 300k - - turbo 182's, 206's, really nice Bonanzas, Mooney's, etc.

Ok..now for the hard question: In the new Cub Crafters Cub, does a solo pilot still have to sit in the back seat due to CG ?

Negative, the pilot flies from the front seat in any Carbon Cub

Paul, Can you disclose the actual airspeeds you were seeing in this thing with the big tires on it??? I realize for sales they want to talk about 140mph at altitude, to sell them....... But at 500ft and BIG tires what was the thing actually doing for airspeeds??? I am guessing 120ish???

2300 gross with a useful of 1088. A regular cub has 1750 gross and 767 useful and 36 gallons, which leaves 551 useful...two fat guys and cargo. At 1088 and 49 gallons that leaves 794. This is a three place airplane, not a two place...just like a 172. So, 230 lbs cargo, full fuel (294 lbs) leaves 2 guys at 282 lbs each. Wow, this is a full sized guy's airplane.... no need to diet to fly.... Considering that Cessna uses around 240 lbs useful per person vs 544 lbs per person in this xcub, this is one heavy hauler.....

seaplaneguy exactly, and since you'll almost always be under that no matter what guy carry, that just means more performance. Of course add anvil floats and that eats into the margins but of course it still can handle it.

so make it cost 2wice as much, i dont think there filling that many orders, but i dont know, it way to costly for the average las pilot, thats my point.. im glad they are working on putting us in the air, im just saying it cant come fast enough, and this plane is not a porshe, or a f16 look alike

New plane, new main landing gear (lower drag) but ..... jump, jump, jump - extension ground roll (8:27, soft touchdown, normal grass runway). Beringer main landing gear is the best. If You want to fly faster You must increase power of engine and reduce drag through change wings and application wings mechanization. New thinner airfoil, flaperons, automatic slots. Wings of XCub are very, very primitive and too thick.

it seems this is a move up the rungs for Cub Crafters into the certified Husky world. Would love to see a fly-off against the two. Also would love it if just one of these (damn) companies would create a side-by-side taidragger...

Bulgdoom it compares very favorably against the husky and is way nicer inside and faster for the same ff. Aviat better step up their game and release the D model or they'll be left in the dust.

these are ralyy nice plane, i got to give these guys credit, but they change the product too much, hust trying to get it out there for the public to fly,, they must have a bunch of money for this testing,, this product is probably gonna flop, the average lsa flyer isnt going to spend this kind of money,.. they need to hit the books and come up with an aircraft thats gonna cost between 35 and 50 grand with all the same options and performance.. this aint gonna cut it.
@sugershakify
@sugershakify 8 жыл бұрын
This airplane is not aiming for the average LSA flyer. That's the whole point. It is above and beyond anything an LSA can do in speed or payload. It has literally twice the useful load of a typical LSA. They have a plane like you describe, it's called the Carbon Cub. This plane is their answer of taking the Carbon Cub and improving it enough to certified airplane standards. They will sell these planes as quick as they can make them. There are many people that need and want a bush plane, but that an LSA just wont get the job done.
@Jeppelelle
@Jeppelelle 8 жыл бұрын
35-50 grand airplane? Well, thats a stretch, what kind of airplane do you have in mind then? You cant even get a CTLS for that kind of money, and that airplane is considered cheap. Sure, 300k for this airplane is alot and i agree that it will not sell very well but 35-50 grand for a new airplane is unrealistic

Agree 100% I think the saving grace for GA will allowing for sport pilot avionics like the Garmin G3X to be installed on under 6000 lb aircraft. A new industry can emerge to rebuild older aircraft to new technology and also keep it affordable. These new LSA and there price points are a joke.

$295,500 for a cub.... Ha ha ha ha. I was looking in trade a plane and could buy a nice used Cessna Citation CE500 jet wth time on engines for less that that... This is a rich mans toy... It is a nice plane no doubt but you can buy a super cub or make a kit fox which is similar in configuration and mission for a fraction.

Sean Dorn why dont they get better paying jobs elsewhere? a company wont and shouldn't pay more than what a person thinks they are worth so if they stay they are saying its just fine. enough people leave and a company will find a way to make themselves more appealing.
@ramhoves
@ramhoves 7 жыл бұрын
I think that is a skewed mentality. I think the race to the bottom mentality of continued hacking workers pay is going to catch up with the US. I'm guessing this company could afford to pay their workers better, but they take advantage of the economics of Yakima WA.

Even assuming you're right & that your comment is appropriate, you'd feel better about it if the Cub was made in China by workers paid $2 a day?

People are bitching about the price and bitching about the wages. You can't have it both ways. The problem with these airplanes is that they are labour intensive, even more than a PA18 with all the carbon parts. Now add in the burden of certification documentation.... if they paid $20/hr imagine the cost increase.

I like Cubs as much as the next guy. But please..... stop flogging this design to death! It's a 1937 design , I'm pretty sure there have been advances since then. The aerodynamics and ergonomics of Cubs are pretty bad to start with and even the latest Cubs haven't eliminated them completely. I can only imagine what kind of amazing airplane you could produce if you started with a clean sheet of paper. And yes, the prices are ridiculous.
