I have way to many roosters and I need to cull some of them. I often get asked how I pick which roosters to cull so I put together this video to give my thoughts on the topic.

I find your videos very informative. Since I live about a half hour from KC Quail I will contact them about getting some roosters when I start out just to get a few in the freezer. Then I will get a breeding set of the meat makers for getting fertilized eggs. I may get a dozen hens just for edible eggs. Where I am there are a number of quail producers, but none of them are selling eating eggs at the farmer's market, and we have a large Asian and Middle Eastern population. So there is an untapped market here.

I am getting lots of requests for cooking videos so I will probably do some. Just remember that they need to be cooked hot and fast. I like to flatten them out and cook under the broiler in the oven. About 450 for 4 minutes on each side. Season how ever you like or baste with BBQ sauce. Hope that helps

Long time watcher, just subscribed. I started out with 5 hens and a rooster. I was concerned about my rooster being overly aggressive with the hens when one day I actually noticed blood on the inside of the cage. It was a side wound, and healed, but the aggression has continued, especially with one hen that was slow to want anything to do with him. About made him supper a couple times, but want some fertilized eggs first. I know it's somewhat normal for the males to grab the hens by the back of the neck, so sometimes the lose some feathers, but in addition, I've seen him go for the hens eyes, and cause some problems. Just wondering at what point do you call a rooster too aggressive? Thanks for all your videos and teachings. All six were bought as youngions, and grew up together. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

What a coincidence I just started culling some of my quail this evening. 12 to be exact. I have way to many males. I found one dead this morning which had been pecked to death. 20 or more need to go to make room for my coturnix quail from Kansas City that we ordered a few weeks ago. I hope to have a successful hatch . But thanks again for the video, they always seem to hit at the right time.

I LOVE your shirt! Great info too. I have 11 Bob White Quail I hatched last year, they have never laid eggs, I just put a light in the coop last week, you suggested on another video. I have 6 male and 5 female. They are so melo, they never fight or chase each other at all that I have seen. Do I need to cull 4 male anyway so I can get eggs?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 жыл бұрын
That shouldn't prevent them from laying. It really has more to do with the amount of light that they have. Bob White's can be a little more difficult than Coturnix but they should start laying soon.

I really enjoy watching your videos. I have to admit I choose roosters based on friendliness, which sometimes causes a problem. I like my bird's hand tame to make it easier to catch in a large pen rather than cages. I can catch who I will breed from and just put them in a crate in the larger pen so no prob's reintroducing them to the flock afterward. Right now the colors are too young to vent sex so they are in a cage. Trouble is they all jump out on me every time I open it - three flying to hand (looking for mealworms - I have hand fed these since chicks). Do you have any cage ideas to keep them contained?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 4 жыл бұрын
I had to laugh a little at this one...had one bird jump out at me when I went to feed this morning. I am not sure what kind of set up you have but the door opening from the top down helps me to keep them in the cage. You might have just make a series of smaller doors instead of one large door so you can block the entire opening when you do open it. Just a thought.

Hey Chris, I can keep roosters together regardless of how many and they won’t fight as long as I keep the 1-4 ratio right? Or should I do the 1-4 ratio but in their own cage.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
Roosters usually don't fight much with each other. That isn't a guarantee but if you do have a rooster that is overly aggressive it is probably just a genetic trait of his and it won't matter what the ratio is.

What's the line between "overly aggressive" and regular rooster pecking order? I have a 2x4 wire bottom cage with 2M and 6F (Didn't want to risk just one M to make sure I got fertilized eggs). One clearly is the dominant male and gives the other a peck when he sees him to keep him in his place. At what point (aside from open wounds) would I consider it more than just saying to the smaller male "I'm the boss" and consider it an aggressive trait I wouldn't want to pass on?

Are quail expensive or cheap to buy? Also how noisy are they and they look similiar to chickens just very small. Are they easy to raise?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 жыл бұрын
I guess that depends on what you consider expensive. Around here you can generally buy them for about $2 or $3 each for birds a few weeks old. They aren't nearly as noisy as chickens, most people think they are just wild birds singing so neighbors are pretty tolerant of them. And they are very easy to raise.

Hi Chris. Interesting video as usual. I was wondering if you can cull for crowing? Do the alpha males crow more than the others? If you remove the dominant males will the other males eventually take their place and start making just as much noise? In that case one may as well keep the biggest nicest males. I live in an urban environment and want to bother the neighbours as little as possible.

Hi Chris , what do you do with the baby quail's that are hatched with plit legs ?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
That can be difficult to deal with. The trick is to treat it as quickly as you can. You need something that will force the bird to keep its legs under it. That could be a brace of some kind or something like a large pill bottle. You can put the bird in the bottle to keep its legs under it (I hope that makes sense). I use a very short piece of PVC (I think 3/4 inch). Place the bird in there for about 8 hours or so and see if that does the trick. Sometimes it will and sometimes it won't. If it doesn't work the chick generally dies so I tend to cull them out.

I usually separated the females I want to keep for breeding and egg production, put them in a cage and order a new rooster. Eventually I will start with better record keeping to be able to be sure there are good pairings. Inbred cages might go for another generation, then they are culled.but for a few bucks a couple times a year, it's currently not worth watching the genetics too carefully.

@fzkanj
@fzkanj 6 жыл бұрын
Pebbles it should be 1 bird per sq ft. So 3x4=12 birds. I would not put more than 15. The birds will fight , pluck each others feathers, stress out , thus will slow egg production.

Actually, if it is a meat run of birds and you are going to butcher at 8 weeks old you could get away with 30 birds in a cage that size. it will be very crowded for the last 2 weeks but it could be done. As far as permanent housing I wouldn't go over 20 and 15 is probably a better number. and it is true that if they were hatched together they have a much lower chance of fighting.

@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 жыл бұрын
that sounds about right on the ratios. Generally aggression will work itself out and culling is not necessary. If it comes to hat i would suggest culling 4 or 5 birds and replacing them in groups to keep the one new bird from being picked on too much.

Oh no. I am sorry to hear about your problems. I don't know how long the light has been on them but it generally takes a few weeks before they start laying. I know it is hard to be patient but they should start at any time.

Mine took 5-6 weeks after I hatched them to start laying eggs. I do not leave a light on in summer. Heat lamp in winter ( red). Daylight bulb in dark area's. Plant bulb for lighting.

@Slightlyrednecked

As long as you have enough light (14 hours a day) he will start breeding again. Assuming that there aren't any stress factors like moving cages or predators.

One or may be two of my hens laid two eggs in two days,and suddenly they skipped laying today!I have 17 females here,why arent they start laying yet!Its almost 53 days!
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
probably a lack of light. They need about 14 hours of light a day to lay consistently and the days are very short right now so unless you add some kind of external light they won't lay until the days get longer.

I kept one cock to eight twelve hens, and kept based on egg laying of hens, rate of grow out, and breast n thigh meat. Otherwise I had some lines I encouraged to care for young, hide, perch, forage, and groom feathers and especially feet better, than normal ones. Aggression is verile vigor.

can you mix bobwhites quail with coturnix quail?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 4 жыл бұрын
If you are asking if you can house them together, then yes you can. If you want to cross breed them, that won't work. You may get a few cross bred birds but they won't be sterile and able to produce young themselves because Coturnix and Bob Whites are different species.

A mix of the birds you already have and probably a few odd balls that don't match any of the parents. I know that isn't a real clear answer but honestly you never know for sure until you try.

It is playing on the fact that everyone blames the gun when there is violence. it isn't the gun that causes the violence but the person behind it. Just like pencils don't misspell words but the person using the pencil does.

It's MUCH easier to kill people with a gun than a pencil. Mass murderers can kill dozens of people with a gun with little effort in minutes. Even if someone there is armed, it's easy to get the drop on them and/or shoot them in the back if the attack is unexpected. Learning to use a knife or sword to overcome an opponent is much harder, more dangerous for the would-be killer, and can't kill as many people at one time. Cars can also be dangerous, but no one argues that you need to get training, show id, and pass a test first.

Wow. I think you missed the point of my shirt. You obviously feel very passionately about this topic. And I think it is clear that we have very different opinions on the topic. I think it is probably safe to say that neither of us will convince the other to change their mind in the youtube comments. But since this video is about quail and not about gun rights, if you can look past that difference in opinion I am sure you will find some very helpful information that will help you. If you can't accept the fact that we see differently on this one topic (honestly we probably see differently on lots of topics) and you have to focus on that one thing then maybe it is best for you to find another channel to follow. Just a fair warning, most of the channels that discuss information about raising quail are homesteading type channels and will probably have similar views to mine on this topic. They may not wear a shirt displaying it but you should know they probably feel the same way. I am sorry you were offended and I hope you get the information you were looking for.

All I wanted was a video about quail, and instead I had to run into a monster like you. Do you keep quail because you like to kill innocent creatures?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
wow. I am not sure how you made the leap to me being a monster in some way. Like I said if you can't look back a simple difference in opinion and focus on the things we agree on instead, maybe it is best to follow some other channel. As long as they keep their other opinions quiet you should be ok with focusing on the content of the video and not feel the need to call them names and sling hate at them. If you really feel the need to do that there are probably lots of channels that actually talk about these topics. I am sure you can find one pretty easily and find lots of other people like you that will all group together and call those people names too. It would probably be more fun for you if you had friends that would join in and support you.
