Truly a masterpiece of acting and actors. I watch it every year now. Unfortunately, I just discovered this series just 2 years ago. In the USA we don't have so many classic British programs. I'm so glad I have a chance to see this in my lifetime. The British have a great history of culture.

My mum and I used to be glued to the tv on Sunday nights to watch Poldark in 1975. I have tried but just cannot take to the new version. For starters, Angharad Rees’ portrayal of Demelza was so full of charm as well as having that stunning red hair. Jill Townsend was amazing too, at putting on an English accent - I never knew when I first watched it in the 1970s that she was American. With the new series, I found it difficult to recognise each character even once they’d been introduced. I’ve just started watching the original again as I have it on DVD. Excellent.

My fave in the series in terms of what actors call 'character development"? Demelza, hands down. She starts out as this ragamuffin, dressed as a boy, who tries to pick Ross's pocket at the market..and the story of her connection with Ross Poldark begins and gains steam from there. Just wonderful. Sorry to hear - we lost Miss Rees some years ago.

I wondered why Richard Morant who was terrific in series 1 ( and was also a fab 'Flashman' in a BBC adaptation of Tom Brown's Schooldays) didnt continue his role as Dr Enys in series 2 Now I know !!! Dont usually like period drama but I enjoyed Poldark - as a teenager I watched it with my mum on Sunday nights - and now have the DVD's to watch whenever I wish Great cast - sadly some of the actors are no longer with us - gorgeous scenery and a wonderful story

Highlandcoffee1 There was a row about a scene that Robin and Richard didn't like--and their take on it was true to Winston Graham's original novel. Richard decided not to return--apparently in part because that conflict with the director left a bad taste in is mouth. Robin writes about this in his memoir, Making Poldark.

not really the only similarity is just a love triangle Camilla was Prince Charles' true love that he ended up being married Charles never really love Diana and they were married for 15 years and had two children Charles married Camilla after Diana died Diana died young Camilla was a commoner Diana was upper class In the book and two series Elizabeth was an idealized love Demelza was the true love Elizabeth died young Demelza was a commoner Elizabeth was upper class Ross stayed married to the same woman - Demelza in the book, Ross and Demelza was married for over 30 years and five children

I love the original series dramatizing the Poldark novels. There are two comments in this video that need to be corrected. The first is the comment that is wrongly conceived is that Robin Ellis as Poldark appears effeminate because he has long hair. The way that Robin and the other male characters had their hair done for their parts in the 1970's series was exactly the way that men wore their hair in the late 18th Century. That comment is incredibly anachronistic. One of the big problems with the most recent series is that Aidan Turner and the other actors portraying men at the time don't look like they are of their social class in the late 18th Century. Aidan's hair is long but is not long enough in the back and then tied up in a bow. The other male characters who have shorter hair and long sideburns look like they are in the Regency Period. The second issue in the video that was raised that I disagree with was articulated by Robin Ellis himself. He envisioned Ross Poldark as a radical. He was not. In the novels, Ross reads with approval Edmund Burke's critique of the French Revolution. Ross was horrified by the radical nature of the French Revolution and opposed taking reforms as far as they did, past reasonable and measured reforms to a top-to-bottom re-structuring of French society. Rather, Ross sought the best for all whom he encountered. He was a tender-hearted man with a sense of justice and fairness. He hated to see strong, honorable men and their families taken advantage of by the rising middle class and looked for ways to make sure those in the working class received enough to survive and even thrive on. Ross' concern for the working class, especially those who worked for him, was based more a traditional sense of Noblesse Oblige with moderate reforms than a wholesale overthrowing of the social and economic system. Poldark was no radical egalitarian. He respected and admired Americans fighting for their liberty and their dignity even though he fought against them, but strongly opposed the radicalism of the French Revolution. Socially, the American Revolution never challenged traditional religious or moral order. On his political and social views, Ross hit the same balance as did Edmund Burke, the founder of conservatism in the English speaking world.

@christophergraves6725 .... Ross made an angry comment, in a scene, powered from seeing horrible the poverty in his own backyard, disparaging William Wilberforce. His criticism being that the latter was giving all attention to fighting against the slave trade which should have been directed towards his own kin (my words of how I remember the comment). I let Ross know somebody needed to fight that fight, just as somebody was needed to be courageous to fight this fight !

They mentioned that Demelza's character in the series was different from the book. Does anyone know in what way? I just wanna know if this newer Poldark is actually more true to the books in terms of Demelza's character. Either way, Demelza in the original series was AWESOME, and I can't really imagine Demelza any other way.

Kristine Silmaro The new Poldark is like 99% of the book while the old one is like 65% especially in serious cases. Like Ross marrying Demelza because she was pregnant. Never that. He decided to marry her the second day he first slept with her. Or burning down Trentwith, how can?. When it's the house Geoffrey-Charles inherits for future Poldark generation. Or Aunt Agatha living elsewhere but Trentwith. Never true. The book are so rich as per scripts that new Series Writer Debbie said, no need to change much. Demelza in the book was as dark as Ross and quite tall.

seyi klaxi So I went and read all 12 books, so yeah I know about all this. But while it's true the book is rich, and the newer series is more true to it...... I still really love the older series. In some ways, more than the new one. Just because Ross and Demelza are different in the older one doesn't mean they're characters are bad. I loved seeing a more fiery Demelza, and to me the fact that Ross would only marry Demelza when he found out she was pregnant is more believable. Because I'm sure he's slept with other women besides her, and didn't feel the inclination to marry them. But for some reason, he married Demelza even though he didn't particularly love her at the time?? Plus, even though the newer series is more true to book, it didn't feel as rich because I could barely feel the passing of time like I could in the older one. There aren't as many of the "smaller moments" like there were in the older one where I felt I could get to know the characters better. And I don't know, I just feel like the way dramas are cut and edited today are just too choppy, and they seem to like adding in a lot of montage scenes of people looking out into the distance for no real reason. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the new series. I think Aiden and Eleanor do a great job of portraying Ross and Demelza. But the older Ross and Demelza were just as good, and I felt like the series just flowed better, even if it deviated from the books.

@@klaxi100 I think most of the changes made in the original series improved the story such as Ross marrying Demelza out of a sense of responsibility for her and then coming to love her over time. The choice he was forced to make between her and Elizabeth put an edge on how things unfolded. It was much more dramatic and made more sense than the way that Ross came to marry Demelza in the novel. They did leave out a lot of scenes, however, that would have enhanced the TV series. As Winston Graham complained, the TV series moved too quickly. But the later series was much worse at the rapidity in which the story unfolded. I felt rushed through the sequences in the later version. I consider Jack Pullman's (and others')teleplay to be much better than what we saw from Debbie Horsfield. She did not play up the economic, class, and religious conflicts as much as what we saw in the original series. The 70's version was much more raw and visceral as were the actors' portrayals of their characters who seemed to step right from the 18th Century including the way that they were dressed and had their hair fixed. The more recent version's male characters did not look like they were in the late 18th Century. They were dressed and had hair styles more like the Regency Period. You are right that Demelza looked different in the novels as did Caroline (she was the red head). Demelza though had black hair but only a light olive complexion. Ross was fair and blue-eyed in the novels with dark brown hair with copper highlights. He was not short, stocky and dark like Aidan. Robin Ellis looks exactly like Ross is pictured in the novels as well as conveying a more provocative and independent character than Aidan. Angharad Rees' Demelza acted and looked more the part of the fiery and determined young woman that matched Ross' character as the novels describe than the withdrawn, quiet Eleanor Tomlinson. By the way, Angharad Rees was tall. She just looks short when standing next to Robin Ellis. Aidan is too short and dark to play Ross and too tame.

I’m going to be unpopular but I don’t think any of the screen Demelzas has captured book Demelza. I really wish they had kept to the physical description that Winston Graham so emphatically mentioned. Dark haired and dark eyed. Also screen Demelzas shouts and nags too much ! Book Demelza is too wise and intuitive to ever be that loud and annoying.
