no no no, let me change this title: GOOD cultural representation matters. We can see it ironicly with a lot of disney movies where diversity and representation is handled so bad that a lot of people started to automaticly associate diversity and representation with bad quality, even in media where it is clearly not the case.

I wonder if Disney has learned about good representation from ‘Craig of the Creek’. That one shows a lot of good representation regarding various cultures, has a healthy and non-over the top dose of LGBTQ representation, and they even showed a character who deaf and showed us differences between White and Black sign language. I totally recommend it.

As a Mexican, I feel totally offended by this new series, really. I say the city called "Terremoto Hights", it is something too sensitive for Mexicans (because we have lived and will live several earthquakes that have occurred and will occur throughout history), besides, It's like we're going to call an American city "Twin Towers Heights 9/11" (I know, forgive me if it sounds too rude and sensitive to you, but that's how we feel about ourselves, and about the victims who die in these kind horrible of events). The protagonist calling herself "Tater" is a strange and ugly name not only for Mexicans but for all Latinos in general (I mean they could have chosen a better name for her like: "Xochitl", "Karina", "Silvia", "Martina" "Ximena" "Fernanda" or "Paloma") and the yellow image backgrounds, ugh we don't like it, that for every American media outlet that wants to represent a Latin country in a certain way, they always put those types of backgrounds on it (perhaps before it was passable for us in those days but that it is used in every medium today, it is already prejudiced). And yes, the protagonist's voice actress is right about the fact that Spanish is not an original language of Latin Americans and that it was the events of the "Spanish Conquest" that fostered this language; but more than 500 years have passed since what happened and we as Latinos have made this language our own (that is, using our typical accents that make us identify with our respective Spanish-speaking countries), but indigenous languages ​​are also important to us and that is why every day we try to keep our native languages ​​alive. For which I'm sorry, but Disney has sunk very low on progress with this crap project.

ive never watched TGaMM but seeing that clip of her saying she wasnt "thai enough" actually?? made me cry?? im have palestini/lebanese and half mexican, but i mostly grew up in america, only speaking english and not spanish like my mom or arabic like my dad. my whole life, ive never felt "mexican enough" or "middle eastern enough" and that. really hit home for me.

As a white kid adopted into a mexican family (Stepdad legally adopted me and married my mum) I spent a lot of time around hispanic culture, my family thought it was incredibly important I learnt how to be hispanic. I know that ethnically I cannot be, but culturally, this was the family I grew up in. It wasnt until I was like- 5 that I was told I wasnt Mexican by blood, and it still never took ant of my families culture away. Its why primos bothers me, the names are cheap and innapropriate jabs at the cousins looks or just gross in general. I understand if its a "haha I pick on you like family would." But creators need to bear in mind what they put out because Primos could very easily be some kids first interaction with Mexican culture.

21:00 I felt this way when I saw ‘Encanto’. I’m Chilean 🇨🇱 not Colombian 🇨🇴 but it was just so great seeing a Latin American culture represented for how family oriented it really IS, instead of just seeing various Latin American countries shown through the style of gang mafia shows like they are 90% of the time! 😑 Because that alone can create a picture of a nation that simply isn’t true - The Socio-political struggles of a country do NOT represent its entire CULTURE! 😤

I do really love all the great Thai representation in TGaMM, but I also hope to see a bit more of Molly (and to an extension, Pete's) Irish culture too. Or heck, even just touching on Pete's past in Boston and the culture that the family has inherited from that - all of that could be really interesting and fun to do an episode around.

I am Thai and the Thai spoken in Amphibia and TGaMMG shocked me! It didn't sound like the dubbed version that sounds generated but genuinely and fitting to the characters!

i think it is also interesting to see how this representations may be read from other countries. i’m from colombia, and i grew up watching phineas and ferb in spanish. for me, many characters just had “names in english”, but i didn’t notice that ferb was british (because i didn’t really know the difference between england and the us) and i didn’t know isabella was mexican-jewish. i just registered garcía as last name that is common where i lived and shapiro as “another name in english”. i didn’t know there was supposed to be anything “foreign” to her, for me it was another kid. i didn’t see myself in isabella for also being latina like me, for me it was just another character.

As a Jewish person, representation in shows always meant so much to me! I remember watching Phineas and Ferb as a kid and getting so excited whenever there was a hint of Jewish customs or culture. Unfortunately, I find that most Jewish representation happens during the obligatory Christmas episode, where one character reveals, “actually, I’m Jewish, so I celebrate Hanukkah instead”. Seeing shows go more in-depth about Jewish culture makes me so happy, even though these episodes are usually limited to the topics of Chanukkah, a bar/bat mitzvah, or (for some reason) shiva. Even though I appreciate the representation, these sorts of episodes always feel kind of empty? They almost never go into the culture or significance of these customs or holidays, resorting to comparing them with western culture (such as the idea that Chanukah is the “Jewish Christmas” when they are completely different) I wish these sorts of episodes could delve into other topics - maybe other holidays, such as Purim, Succot, or T’B’shvat. Or maybe they could talk about jewish culture, such as foods other than gefilte fish or latkes, or family dynamics. I don’t know. Jewish representation, to me at least, can often seem last minute and stereotypical.

Wow, I actually really needed to hear that part about "not being _____ enough". I’m half Haitian and half American/Irish, and I was raised in the States. I’ve sort of been repressing the feeling of not being Haitian enough around my mom’s side of the family. I don’t speak either language very well ( They speak French and Haitian Creole) and I don’t feel like I fit in at family gatherings. I have been trying to learn French so I can communicate better with them, though, even if it is still a bit broken. 😅

Never watched The Ghost and Molly McGee but damn they didn’t have to call me out like that- always feeling left out in the family because you don’t speak a language or don’t have a high enough tolerance for the spicy stuff. I’ll have to give it a watch now lol

the fact that the representation with molly mcgee really matters bc i showed it to a friend, who is half thai half irish and they said that they really felt like that when they were younger so having split cultures be apart of your identity is like. really important to so many people representation rlly matters

And this is why I'm so hard on Primos. We've been getting so many positive portrayals of cultural representation in modern Disney shows so it's so sad to have seen Primos fumble so badly with how it presents Mexican culture. On paper, the premise of the protagonist living with her cousins for the summer is pretty harmless, but the way they presented their problems in it's opening really doesn't give positive faith in what the rest of the series will be like. I can only hope that Natasha and her crew will rework the issues and make it so the series can be enjoyable for Hispanic/Chicano viewers. And thank you for making this video. I really do appreciate the spotlight on all these types of episodes and themes.

After I watched hair today gone tomorrow, I started to feel better about my hair and wore it out more naturally instead of straightening it out all the time. My mom always tries to make my hair straight and i thought there’s was something wrong with me because I wasn’t white and I felt like my mom hated how I was. I’d always wish my hair was naturally straight and I didn’t really understand how it was ok for other black people to wear they’re hair “wild”. But after seeing the episode it helped changed my perspective and now I can confidently do my hair how i every i want without worry about my mom getting mad at me :)

I just want to say thank you for the nuanced take. I’m an indigenous mexican and also tejano. I’ve seen and experienced Mexico and the USA, and I Truly believe there is so much of a negative look for the Latino community to USAmericans right now because of the reactions to the show. I just want to dump some things that might help you understand a not as shared perspective on the internet that me and my family hold. (These are the opinions of me and my family, NOT of all Latinos, or even Mexicans.) 1. This youtuber Florian, that’s Romani. who I’ve been watching recently said that the experience of Romani slaves, and people separated from their culture are still Romani experiences as they are Romani people. And it made me realize that Latino-American are still Latino experiences. The tactics of removing people from their culture and then causing them to be excluded from their own people is something that’s been done time and time before by white colonists In the US, and was their main tactic in weakening lots of native tribes. There is a lot of hatred from Latinos to Latino-Americans and vice versa. Everyone tries to be more “valid” than the other, and at the end of the day our experiences are ours. And Latino American experiences ARE Latino experiences. We need to push everyone up and support each other, rather than try to separate each other more. 2. Lots of the criticism towards the show are like a game of telephone. It’s been misconstrued by USAmericans to fuel ideas that I promise you most of us that i know do not care about. I haven’t heard anyone bring up primos besides on the internet. -All the names the kids have are a little silly, but normal. The idea that they are offensive NICKNAMES for kids is wrong. -My family and I (well I’ve only been in one earthquake when I was young) do not find the name terremoto heights offensive, or even care about it. -shoes on the power lines aren’t signs of gangs. It’s just kids messing around. That’s a racist myth. Where I lived in Texas (it was an immigrant neighborhood) I saw a lot of that and there was never any gang activity I ever saw on the news, in person, or in any way. We helped each other out a lot actually. - “oye primos” was off putting at first, but we don’t feel offended by it. Because it’s true, that *IS* how many people speak Spanish in the USA. It’s a change in dialect do to surroundings. I’m firm believer in that language is fluid, and there is no right or wrong way to speak. It’s the same way American English isn’t wrong compared to European English, or black dialects aren’t wrong English. - we don’t feel offended by the show, because we immediately knew it wasn’t about us. we didn’t even relate to it in the first place. This show is not about Latinos in Latino America. It’s about latin-Americans. It’s such an easy distinction to make, that I personally find it hard to believe the people complaining aren’t people who are purely online, or digest too much USA media. 2.5. The idea that showing minorities in any light but perfect angels is immediately racist is a new internet progressive thing. In the USA Latinos are lower income usually, and so they do live in areas that have shoes on powerlines and tend to have messy rooms. To show real experiences is not bad. Its the truth. we’re not perfect, no race is. We should be allowed to be shown in lights that don’t appeal to white people standards. 3. Speaking of, as Mexicans, we LOVE appealing to white people. We are almost more racist than gringos. The difference in treatment of white Mexicans and indigenous Mexicans is crazy. And imagine how black people are treated. But the point is we’ll throw each other under the bus for white USAmerican validation. We bully and make fun of them, yet make deep down need their validation. I mean they come to Mexico and are treated like kings. 4. And what do gringos love more than generalizing every other group as being a hivemind? So we do it for them. I’ve seen countless latinos say “we as Mexicans” or “Latinos feel” etc etc. but we DONT ALL BELIEVE THAT. Latinos are very diverse. Lots of different languages, cultures, races, political beliefs, and literal COUNTRIES. There is NO POSSIBLE WAY anyone who acts as if they speak for all Latinos does not have bad faith intentions to appeal to gringos. Because we are not all remotely the same. A shining example is the KZfaqr called “the angry mexa”, who has made multiple videos with lies, leaving out the full story, or just appealing to white racists like that Mexico is terrible and the land of nightmares and that the USA is the land of dreams. He specifically points out the Mara salvatrucha and gangs, but leaves out that it’s the CIA supplying them with weapons… but he said a lot more my mom and I don’t agree with. 5. Notice how many gringos are in the comments of these videos? Racist white people are so active in this because they love having an excuse to tear down any representation that isn’t appealing to white people, or diluted to a white fragility pallet. My family and I genuinely do not care about this show, but i do care about the reaction to the show. I wish gringos had this much passion when pushing good representation of our cultures, or even Latinos ourselves. But of course, we love tearing our people down for any white validation. This cartoon isn’t good representation of Latinos from Latino countries, because not only is it not about us, but you can’t summarize us all with one cartoon. I personally believe it’s good for kids who feel disconnected from their roots to see that they have a community and place of acceptance. That’s what black people in the USA have done for each other, and indigena communities have done for each other in Mexico to some extent. And I’ve also dealt with a version of that being disconnected from my precolonial culture, so I can sympathize. There is probably much more I could cover and would probably add to this comment later if it comes to mind and I find it important. Meanwhile, thank you for your video that isn’t just reactionary nonsense exaggerating or making things up. You’ve given me a lot of peace, haha. I’ll definitely keep updated on your channel.✌🏽

I think we need to stop acting like language and culture are these rigid and unchanging monoliths. Language and Culture is quite, quite dynamic and diverse. They also assimilate aspects of cultures they sit around. Even Tater's voice actress falls into this trap. Lady, Spanish in Latin America has taken up words of local native languages (Nahuatl, Arawak, Taíno Arawak to name a few).

I’m Dominican American… I grew up in a 90% white community. I completely forgot or ignored my Dominican background. I was not crazy about it and sometimes ashamed at how our culture behaved. I never picked up on Spanish. I can mostly understand when people speak spanish, I just have trouble speaking it. I recently got a job in downtown NYC. I met a whole department of Dominicans and our boss is from there. I struggled at the job at the beginning, and they had a lot of patience and helped me. I told him about how my Father came to this country (America) just like him and how he started out here really struggling. I showed my boss an old document that dictator Trujillo gave to my Grandmother in 1949 back when the Capital of Santo Domingo was called, “Ciudad Trujillo”. I did more research and found out that Trujillo used to give people jobs among other things. I never knew that being Dominican was a huge part of my identity. I started loving myself more from a result of accepting my background as a part of me. I started listening to Merengue and Bachata more and it all brought me back to when I was very little and the one time I went to DR. Whats wild is that I guess I spent so many years erasing my background… other dominicans thought I was half white and some are in denial about about me being full blooded. But I know what I am, and I knew my whole life.

I love the Thai representation in Molly McGee, but I hope we also see her Irish heritage shine too. We generally assume that immigrants are non-white, so it would be cool to see that it's not just the southeast asian side of her that has an immigrant culture, that white people can also be immigrants.

I do think primos is a good concept for a show. Having a cast of characters in wacky situations. But they way the actress handled this is pretty rude and I do think some of the claims are valid but I think some of it is wayyy to crazy and some people are going out for these people like they are wanted criminals and are gonna kill them. CALM DOWN GUYS!

I’m so happy to see how Disney portrayed Molly’s mixed heritage struggles as someone who has and still struggles with feeling like an outsider at family functions bc feeling as you don’t know enough about your culture to be apart of it. It literally made me cry so my heart goes out to all the people who worked on that show

The stuff that Molly feels with not being Thai enough is so relatable to me. I’m Arab(both sides from Syria) but moved to the us when I was 4. I never learned how to speak Arabic fluently(never learned how to read and write, and my Arabic got rusty.) i went to an Arabic speaking church and I always felt super isolated and americanized. All the other kids knew Arabic. All the other kids could go to their home country, I couldn’t since I don’t have a green card or was a citizen. All the other kids were connected to their culture. Not only that, but Syrians look pale and European. I feel too white, too American. Still now, I’m trying to work on how there’s no being “Arabic enough”. I wish we had some Arab representation that aren’t just stereotypes. We don’t all look Egyptian, we aren’t all Muslim, and we aren’t all rich or poor with no inbetween.

I don’t speak Spanish fluently & I HATE empanadas while I feel like I fit in a lot more with my English side which did make me wonder if I had more English blood in me than Chilean Lol. But either way, I’m glad to be part of both, as it meant I was introduced to multiple traditions (including 2 ways to celebrate Christmas! 🎄) so ultimately, I’m glad to be unique in that way 😊

Man, I really need to talk abt that ghost and Molly mcgee episode. I’m half Native American, and white. I grew up very white away from the reservation only visiting every now and then. I don’t know much of my culture, my language, and it doesn’t help that compared to my sibling (who has darker brown skin and black hair) I look a bit more lighter, either getting mistaken for fully white or half latina because I have long dark curly hair(I believe that’s the right word, correct me if I’m wrong) it feels so nice to know there are other mixed kids who feel not *blank* enough. I love my Native American side but I don’t feel like it’s right for me to celebrate it, learn about it or be proud of it because I look more white and I don’t know a lot about my culture, even if I think it’s really beautiful. I feel embarrassed about not knowing much compared to my friends who have parents that are the same race and they are able to be and live more in their culture. I don’t look that native, often getting poked at lovingly by my native families for passing as a white skinny girl who barely visits, but it just feels nice knowing there are others who relate with me. I oftenly wish I could speak my own language or even look more native so whenever I tell people I’m half native they don’t look at me weirdly and think that im lying. (I’ve had a few people who were confused and thought that it wasn’t possible because all natives were dead? Like yeah guess my mom isn’t real then. Neither are reservations.)

The bit about Molly not feeling Thai enough really got to me. My mom is half Mexican but never grew up with the culture or the language. I learned how to speak Spanish in school to feel closer to it, but I still don't feel like I'm Hispanic enough to claim that part of myself. Sometimes it's nice to see those struggles represented.

As an argentinian I am happy they didn't make a white argentinian family because we have a lot of people with different skin colors and they always forget about our native heritage. I am not jewish but live in a jewish neighbourhood and it is really nice seeing how they pay homage to my neighbours in a proper way. The only detail I would mention is her playing tango with the bandoneón; you can play different argentinian music genres with it, not only just tango, but I understand they are probably based off of Buenos Aires city 🤔 I also have to admit that I thought her parents left the country due to dictatureship and not due to war :0 but I haven't seen that episode yet heheh I truly hope that Primos is just a badly advertised story and not actually bad to us latinos ♡ nice video

I haven’t watched ghost and Molly McGee, but I’ve seen the clips from the episode you mentioned here about molly feeling not enough for her heritage. I really enjoyed the clips I’ve seen because how much I can relate to her. I’m not Thai, but Guatemalan-American with one Hispanic parent. I’m a lot like molly because so many people from my family are bilingual and in touch with our family’s heritage because they have two Hispanic parents. I’ve always felt like the odd one out because I don’t speak much Spanish and I never experienced the same things as them. I’ve kinda of started to resent my American heritage because of that. But, with more shows focusing on mixed heritage, it’s helped me accept these things about myself regarding my mixed heritage. And, as a content creator, I’ve been trying to incorporate other ethic groups with my characters in a respectful way. I’m really glad we have shows with such great diversity, and I hope Primos does eventually become one of them, even if it’s off to a rocky start.

watching the molly mcgee episode and having all the family members speak to her i cried i couldn’t watch without tearing up as a mixed kid (hispanic and Haitian) i never felt like i was “black enough” i would have to prove i was black to people and i never felt connected to my heritage and watching molly basically have the same exact experience as me i felt seen and i will forever be grateful for this episode

I am mexican American. Mom grew up in Mexico but came to America when she was little. My dad grew up in texas. Despite growing up in a predominately hispanic town i never learned Spanish and even now struggle with it. So seeing the others around me speak Spanish fluently really made me self conscious. Especially when my cousins would speak it with my grandparents. It really made me feel like i wasn't allowed to call myself Mexican American at all. Like i shouldn't be allowed to participate in the traditions. So watching the episode of TGaMM were she felt insecure in her heritage really made me tear up. I never related to a character so much so that it brought me to tears.

As far as I know there are no Polish characters in any cartoons other than the ones created in Poland and the only video game character that is Polish and I know of is Anna from Dead Island and then again she's only an NPC that does nothing but pray.

In my family, Libby became the main reason to watch The Gost Of Molly McGee since we're all argentinean and feel represented by her doing simple things like eating empanadas and drinking mate with his dad or playing the bandoneon at school on argentinean appreciation day (we didn't know there was an appreciation day for our culture until we saw that episode lol)

A couple of points. I know this video is a few weeks old now but it did get the wheels turning. I love this new wave of mixed/multiracial kids shows and I wish we could have that for the AA kids too. For example, a show about a kid that has one AA parent and one Ghanaian parent and while they'll have some similarities that would also come with a lot of differences. Plus, it would be nice to see a show talk about the diaspora. "Craig of the Street" kinda does this but with how different we can be based on where we grew up. Any kid can relate to the whole "country mouse/city mouse" tale but the story changes a little when one black kid grew up in the suburbs and the other is still living in the city.

I nearly cried during that Molly McGee episode. During middle school and even now, racial tension in the US started to grow and I started to feel like I wasn't latina enough. My siblings and father have darker skin, looking more latin american, and my mother speaks fluent spanish. I had none of that, though I was slightly learning spanish. I would try to tan so I looked darker, thus more like a latina. Didn't help that every latina I saw on TV had even darker skin than I ever have. But now, I accept myself and take pride in my ethnicity, no matter how white my skin may be. No matter how "white-passing" I look (I hate that word so much. It's so damn degrading).

I am raised by two filipino parents and grew up in the Philippines but I can completely relate to Molly’s struggle in 100% Molly Mcgee My parents decided to teach me english first before Tagalog which led to a lot of consequences, like being forced to learn it at school when I just wasn’t ready, not being able to connect to family members and just a bunch of struggles coming up because of it My Mom tried teaching me once but I had a hard time because of the pressure I had to be more “Filipino” The pressure was so overwhelming to the point where I started wishing I was white and resented my culture- I felt like a foreigner within my own home even tho I was completely raised with the culture and lived in the country Relatives always point out how I don’t speak Tagalog and would constantly ask me how I’m doing with it which is nice but just a painful reminder that I’m delayed It doesn’t help that I grew up with western media so that was a big influence on my behavior and at the time there wasn’t any representation that really helped me People would say I sound “american” from the way I speak which just made me more insecure and filipino class would be absolute torture for me because I’m confronted with something I don’t like abt myself It’s not till I got on the internet more and realized there were people who go through the same struggles I did and it made me feel less alone and just made me realize I’m still a Filipino even if I don’t speak the language TGAMM had become one of my favorite shows so seeing 100% Molly Mcgee made me tear up Molly is already a relatable character for me and I wish I had this show when I was younger Maybe I’d start being more proud of my culture sooner but it’s better late than never I used to see my culture as something that was forced on me and something to get away from but it was just how my parents showed it to me that made it seem that way Sorry for the essay but that episode really got to me and brought up a part of my life I don’t talk abt often I do hope we get more pinoy rep soon in animation! I’m genuinely happy for other cultures that had great representation in these shows and it makes me really hopeful for the future of animation and entertainment as a whole

I've never watched The Ghost and Molly McGee, but that clip about not being "Thai enough" was something that I empathize with a lot. Both of my parents were born in India, but I was born in America. I was raised American. I know almost nothing in Hindi (that's that main language my parents speak). I find myself feeling very "whitewashed." I know that a lot of people struggle with this, and having those feelings validated is so amazing. I'm glad people get to see that represented.

As a Jewish American I have found that for all the Jewish characters you’ve mentioned, that a lot of people seem to respond to them with “huh they don’t seem Jewish” since they’re not big walking stereotypes which is why I love these characters it’s important for people to know that not all Jews are how Comedy betrays them also Jews don’t get a lot of representation in most media or the very least not good representation so whenever they do get some it’s nice to see

I’m Italian-American, my dad’s parent (can’t remember which one) was raised by Sicilian immigrants in Pennsylvania. I’m recognizably of southern Italian descent, but the only problem is that my dad is a horrible person and stopped being in my life when I was nine, which meant I stopped contacting that side of my family. I never got to learn anything about my Sicilian heritage because my father chose to get milk. It feels weird to think about sometimes, but I never really mentally harped on it until I met another Italian-American girl who looked like me. Also on her father’s side, she was incredibly excited to hear we had similar heritage, but she became saddened when she realized I knew nothing about the language or culture whatsoever. That was when I realized how much I’d missed out on just because of the decision he’d made to leave my life. My friends will sometimes talk about how awkward they feel when they visit their relatives, not feeling ____ enough for them, I can’t even feel that. I just wonder, do research on Sicilian history and imagine what my great grandparents might’ve been like. What makes it even worse is that I often get mistaken for being Hispanic or Middle Eastern, so not only do I feel like an imposter for knowing nothing about my heritage, I feel like I’m visually lying to people by having a middle skin tone and nothing to say for it. The Molly episode feels like something I’d relate to deep down, but in a different way, since I’ve never even really gotten to know the people I would’ve visited overseas or had to awkwardly speak another language to. The people who complain "You can't make the protagonist a minority! I can't relate to them/most people in this country are white so you must make them white!" are so dumb. I've watched TV shows, movies, and played games with white, black, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Serbian, Italian, Hispanic, female, cat, dog, etc. protagonists. Their race/sex/ethnicity isn't really important to me. What matters is that you make a character that is interesting. Unfortunately, too many people have recently become obsessed with identity politics, which is dividing everyone over trivial stuff.

Believe it or not there is a high number of Jewish people in Northern Mexico. They actually invented the flour tortilla since regular tortillas were considered non Kosher due to the fact that corn was a typical food fed to pigs. My ancestors on my mothers side had the last name Peretz before they were either discovered to be “maranos” and forcefully converted to Catholicism or escaped persecution in Spain and left behind their religion and culture because of the pain. Either way they settled in the northern part of Mexico where much of my family still lives today. I’m trying to reconnect with my roots and learn more about my families past but I constantly get told off by it either by family members or people within the Jewish community.

When I saw Primos I said. "This looks way too much like Loud House."

Primos had issues with how it was marketed, how it was designed, and how it was perceived by different groups of people. To latin-americans who are born in a latin american country, they thought it was terrible representation because the protagonist spoke spanglish and thought the show took place in mexico or some latin american country. To latin-americans born in non-latin-american countries, they saw it as bad representation but knew that the show took place in the usa and that it was based on the creator's experience (who is biracial) and related to the character speaking spanglish. To the non-latin-americans, all they saw was the artwork and the protagonist being a brown girl with glasses instead of a white guy and only listened to "criticisms" from latin-american dudebros (instead of the actual constructive criticism) and ignored dispora latin-americans' thoughts unless they can use it to be racist or sexist. Luckily for Natalie Kline, it is not too late to fix the show. [If the live-action sonic movie can do it, primos can be saved as well.] All they have to do is get rid of the yellow sky and filter (there has got to be a better way to show smog than just a yellow filter), change the name of the city to los angeles, change some of the nicknames (or go by their actual names instead), and hire some consultants and more latin-american writers. Sad part is, if primos was centered on mexicans born in mexico instead of mexicans born in the usa, disney would have made more of an effort to hire mexican consultants and writers. For some reason, white people will only relate and listen to poc that are either mixed, multiracial, or born in their native countries while they ignore non-mixed poc born in white countries. People praised encanto, but colombian people actually criticized the movie for misrepresenting certain aspects of colombian culture and music. [Encanto had white writers and the music was created by lin manuel. Mucha lucha was not created by mexicans but they had so many mexican-americans involved behind the scenes and it shows.] Disney's animated mulan was criticized by china for being too "asian-american" while asian-americans (except mongolian-americans) loved it. The animated movie had asian-american female writers and asian-americans working behind the scenes (not just the voice cast). Apparently, white people thought they could create a more "accurate" live-action mulan that would appeal to china than asian-americans so they had zero asian-americans working behind the scenes of the live-action mulan, picked an actress who was famous and china and could speak english but was known in china for being a horrible actress, and did no research other than watch a few mulan movies. And it tanked because china saw that movie as "chinese culture being bastardized by (white) americans". Coco was written by a mexican man and represented mexican culture well. Ron stoppable is mentioned to be (part-)jewish but is rarely shown to be involved in jewish culture. Andi mack did a great job picking people to play andi's grandparents and mother, but failed when it came to casting andi's father. [People who are 3/4-white and 1/4-non-white LOOK WHITE and navigate thru the world as a white person. The actresses playing andi mack and her mom are biracial and look mixed (to asian eyes).] Lizzie mcguire wrote lizzie's best friend to be mexican - even though the actress is filipina - just because the actress has a spanish last name and doesn't look east asian or south asian. Chinese people got mad that they casted a vietnamese actress (who is 1/8-chinese) tonplay mulan's daugther in descendants. Live-action lilo and stitch casted a pale white-passing actress who is half-white and half-filipina as nani (who is 100% native hawaiian and indigenous and has dark skin) just because she was born in Hawaii. [This is a nickelodeon example, but one of their power rangers show wrote one of the guy rangers as a brown mexican when the actor was thai who didn't look east asian or south asian. The writers of bojack horseman learned the hard way that they should have casted a vietnamese woman to play diane instead of a white woman.] Animated peter pan had horrible representaion of native americans. Disney's pocahontas was bad representation of native americans and a whole can of mess. Turning red was great representation of chinese-canadian girls, but so many guys and white girls couldn't see that because mei was human for most of that movie. Princess and the frog and soul addressed black american cultures, but had their protagonists as non-humans for the majority of their movies. Esmeralda was re-written to be a roma woman, but was still sexualized by white men. Saw clips of jessie and it was bad with hiw they treated their characters of color; no different from a lot of disney channel live-action shows and movies with white main characters. Live-action avatar the last airbender movie ... enough said.

Agreed on all points...sadly, there's ONE form of representation that many have vocally proclaimed SHOULDN'T have representation. The LGBT I for one, believe that ALL groups are worthy of positive media representation; I just wonder why gay, Trans, Bi and Pansexual people have become like monsters in the public eye this year

Another example from Disney that has some good messaging about one's culture is the show American Born Chinese (based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang) it focuses on Jin Wang, a son of Chinese immigrants, and his struggles growing up and some people judging him just because of his race, which get pretty complicated when he befriends Sun Wei-Chen, the son of Sun Wukong (if you think that parts confusing, try saying that last part out loud), and asks for Jin's help in finding some important artifact that could help him stop the Bull Demon King from both worlds, in addition to the main plot, there are two side plots, one involves the struggles of Jin's parents to the point they could be filing for divorce soon, and the simple life of Jamie Yao, a former actor who is coaxed into joining a reunion special for an old in-universe 90's sitcom he was in, and his character was an offensive stereotype of how people viewed Chinese people in comedies back in the 80's and 90's, and before anyone attacks me, the character was intentionally made to be an offensive stereotype like in the graphic novel to help Jin overcome his hang-ups about his heritage, and to show how far we've come as a society and that some things were definitely products of their time, and since the show has the son of the Monkey King, there's gonna be a few nods to the various works of the great sage equal to heaven, like Dragon Ball, Saiyuki, and the 70's TV show "Monkey"

I always enjoy learning moments from these kinds of shows when they feature cultural representation. I’ll never know the ins and outs of every place out there, but it has always been neat to learn about other places.

It would be great if Laotian people became represented in media as well since there’s now more recent representation of thai culture. Nobody really talks about the culture much, most of the time just saying it’s very similar to Thailand. But it would be fun to see more of it in media though.

As a kid, even in a very culturally mixed area in the US, I rarely met mixed-race people in real life, let alone media. Especially mixed cultures. It was jarring to learn when I was little that most people have parents that look the same lol I'm so happy that we're not only getting more and more mixed rep, but also that disconnected culture clash when a mixed kid might be raised more "americanized" I'm half hispanic, but I never learned spanish. I can't talk to half my relatives, and that has made it quite hard to connect to that side of myself. If my mother, who is white, didn't try her hardest to learn my dad's favorite meals from my grandmother, I don't know if I would even know hispanic food Then again, she might feel the same way. Her mother is canadian french, but my mom knows no french and has to use my grandmother as a translater to have conversations with her aunts Point is, I'm gonna have my kids learn more than english lol

8 months late but Molly mcgee made em so happy to see. I have native heritage but don't feel connected to it due to my grandfather's side trying to hide it. I don't know much about them or my cherokee/comanche heritage. Even worse I don't feel I don't "look" native american (curly hair, pale, etc). It's so nice to see the whole "not ____ enough" swen.

I honestly resonate with Molly's "I'm not Thai enough" feeling. I am fully Ghanaian, grew up in Ghana, never stepped foot out of Ghana, and somehow I can't speak a lick of Ga, Twi, Ewe or whatever language Guans speak, haven't eaten any of their foods or even met anyone outside my nuclear family who has. So seeing that gutted me, since I don't have the excuse of not living there, and made me fell whole, because even if it's not the exact same thing, someone still gets it.

8:00 I LOVE this part a lot. My parents did something similar to this. My mom is Filipino and my dad is part Irish and Scottish. A couple years ago my parents actually renewed their vows doing a traditional Irish ceremony called Handfasting. 10:52 I know I commented this in a shorts video you did but this whole episode really represents the imposter syndrome a lot of mixed kids and even kids that have roots in a different country but are born in another experience. It can lead to kids not feeling enough of one race, resenting a part of them or even pushing away their heritage all together for not feeling worthy of anything. That struggle is truly represented well here. Nobody should ever tell you, even yourself, that you aren't good enough for your race, gender, religion, etc. We're all our own individuals and there isn't a right or wrong way to be.

I love the fact there's a muslim girl in the 'Craig of the Creek' show. She's an unnamed background character, but she's there. Wearing her hijab, just hanging out with the other kids. And I'm pretty sure, she's never touched the hand of any male character. Why is that important? Muslim women, by order of their belief, can't touch a person of the opposite sex until marriage. I know a muslim family, so I try to learn all I can from them.

Another thing why representation in media matters so much is because media is often people first exposure towards foreign ethnicity or culture or religion and ultimately, shape their perspective for their entire life, one of the example is after 9/11 and subsequent reporting of terrorism involving Muslims in news media finally shapes the stereotype of Muslims being terrorists, in which only perpetuated by entertainment media such as tv shows like 24 or Homeland (these are not kid shows, but you get the idea), same can be said for Latinos being drug cartels/gangs, in which it started from news reporting of violence involving Central/South American gangs or drug busts involving Central/South American cartels in which later perpetuated in entertainment media.

Nobody here mentioned hailey's on it so i might as well. Being 50% Hawaiian i thought it was some (more or less) great representation of Hawaiian culture.

I’m thai, fully thai. But I barely speak thai. This makes me feel extremely distant from my new school and scared of socializing. I see Molly’s problems and that was extremely relatable, despite being born and raised in Thailand. Yes, I get extremely overwhelmed whenever I see everyone speak thai.

Despite being Mexican, I feel most represented by Molly Mcgee. My mother moved to America from Mexico City when she was about 15, and my father is very white. The cities a spent most of my childhood were prominently white so I always felt exotic. But since I moved to California kids at my school put my race into question, some are even anti-white and treat me as inferior. This has made me insecure about my race, but that one episode really helped me!

I’m Mexican, and it saddens me on how our culture is looked upon. I hate when I show people my families food, they go “oh, I can get that at a restaurant.” Or all the stereotypes and hurtful comments sayign we are very well represented, which isn’t the case!! I always see a Mexican character thays a stereotype and they never show our true colors. It saddens me to what happened with primos :( sorry it’s so weird to say this outloud becuase no one talks about it. No one also talks about how people whitewash Mexican characters/ culture. No one ever says anything

I do wish we got to see a little bit more about Molly‘s Irish heritage too. There’s nothing wrong with representing her Thai roots, but it would’ve been nice to see her learn about her Emerald Isle side too

Hey Mexican here just to say I really hope that show isn't about Mexico cuz I'm extremely tired of seeing (and this is legit) people here losing the ground, even my Dad believes Mexico is greater than south america countrys which is stupid Ik and people from USA, One time I saw a man confusing Encanto with Mexico the moment it came out the first trailer so I really want to see my friends and people to have their moment of representation on TV like Chile or Brasil which is mostly forgoten. So I agree that representation matters and it damn good to see diversity, actually wanna try out that Thai drink you mentioned. And with I Primos I only don't like the Terremoto name and the sepia background but I have some hope on this show cuz it looks cute how the characters are mix together like the typical family reunions and the fact that they show redheads and Afrolatinos as well as real life so thanks for this video

Cultural representation, when done right, is way more educational that one may think. Showing the truer aspects of a certain culture other people not from that region/country would struggle to get. Of course, not everything is 100% faithful, as even someone from X place can show signs that diverge from the "common rule", be good or bad ones. On that note, isn't also extremist to dictate that only showing the "good side" of a culture (morals, habits, cuisine) is allowed, but if you show a "bad side" (bad habits, twisted morals) one is being "r@cist"/"xenophobic"/"uncultured"/"prejudiced"? I'm from Brazil, and I'm yet to see ANY representation from Brazil that doesn't revolve around soccer/football, Carnaval, Rio de Janeiro or slums ("favelas"), or worst yet, a character that lives in the slums of Rio and loves to play soccer. Those are common and often recognized as part of the country's general culture, but Brazil is the biggest country of Latin America, and they only pick vague details of a state that has an area less than 1% of the total of the country that is basically a whole world of how diverse it is.

As a Salvadoran Mexican born In American I feel very cultural alone do to the fact that my community is very Korean and Japanese. All though around me that are Mexican or Salvadoran are rude or disrespectful which leads me to lean towards other people and which lead me to feel like if I can’t talk to anyone about my culture or just to talk in Spanish. Sometimes I wish there was just a little bit more good representation for Salvadoran or Hispanic people in general

I am mixed heritage, with Colombian & Irish on My Mom’s side and Mexican & English on My Dad’s, and that Molly McGee episode really made my heart full. I remember when I told a friend I used to have about my Mexican. Spanish, and South American heritage, and the disappointment I had as she labeled me “too white” and “in denial” about my heritage simply because I wasn’t tan. I’m glad I cut that person off because discovering my heritage has made me so happy, and allowed me to connect to my ancestors who walked through hell so I could be here.

It is a shame theat in mollys show we never get much about her Irish roots. So many legends from Ireland revolve around ghosts like the banshee, the dulahan, the ghost bride, the whispering mummies, the vanishing island, or stumpies brae like they are sitting on a gold mine and they don't even use it. It would have also been nice for a irish/celtic person myself to see molly learn more of her Irish roots and not her thai ones. Like their dad could bring up how he is Irish but also celtic and explain to his kids that the people from these nations/regions Ireland, Scotland, the isle of mann, wales, Cornwall, Brittany, and galicia are all celtic the last of the celts. Just saying if you do one side of the family you should do both.

I hope they represent leas know culture's like Iraq or Syria and Iranian these three countries have a lot of culture and history that unfortunately we don't see it more in any kind of meadi other than document series or war and suffering movie's

So: as a Black American,i have kind of a specific perspective on rep,as I rarely saw Black rep on in cartoons growing up that wasn't limited to just one character , or non human characters i interpreted as black,like the turtles from the 2012 version of tmnt. A lot of black rep I had as a kid and still see today,especially in fantasy and sci-fi is through coding,you don't really ever get aspects of the culture,even in small parts of it aside from characters using AAVE and it just being treated as modern slang rather than a Black American dialect (it's obviously not limited to black Americans,but you can kind of TELL when someone is just using to convey internet slang and not an actual dialect with a whole grammar structure) which is why COTC and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur just BLEW me away with how much respect is shown to Black culture and inner city black kids. A lot of the cartoons I was exposed to on reruns that had Black kids in them were NOT good rep,ESPECIALLY for black boys* (*except Filmore). An unfortunate symptom of late 2000s writing and perpection of black people and while I didn't internalize it, it *was* something i noticed. COTC came out when I was around 14 and Moon Girl obviously came out very recently,but I think just seeing it on TV as i passed through,and eventually sitting down to watch the episode about Lunella's hair and seeing something as simple as her wearing a silk bonnet made me really happy.

The episode where Molly talked about feeling "less Thai" is somewhat relatable. I'm Russian/American and despite learning my mom's native language for years, I can barely speak a full sentence without sounding like I was a child. I don't use it often, and I don't really eat their food either since the scents can be quite potent. Yet when I see my younger sibling excel at it, including other members of my family, it hurts to think that I'm not even half of that and I often think to myself, can I even consider myself to be Russian? Even though I'm not hearing it from my actual family, it gives me some closure to hear that I'm still valid in that.

As someone who’s grandma is Filipino but who is very white and American(since my grandpa and dad are white Americans) I felt that “not [culture] enough” so much because it’s such a weird experience to have a culture around you and have a connection to it your entire life but also being unable to fully connect to it even though you want to because you’re a second or third generation of that culture(in addition to the fact that I often fear if I do lean into that culture of mine since I’m white I’ll get attacked for appropriating it but that’s another issue) but I honestly really related to that scene and I know others here did too so there’s my version of it in case anyone else can relate as well :]

I am half puertorican (from my dads side) and half middle eastern (from my moms side) and I can relate to molly so much! I grew up in Puerto Rico and I only speak English and Spanish but I was never taught anything about my middle eastern side and it gets *frustrating* sometimes. And I don’t like to talk about it around people because most people get uncomfortable because of the bad rep that middle eastern people still get.
