Glad to see another person who understands about TOH's cancelation. If you wanna get mad about a show getting the shaft because of LGBTQ+ rep, you should look more at Steven Universe. Rebecca Sugar fought tooth and nail to be able to get Saphire + Ruby, and was only able to show them as a couple by arguing that the Gems don't have gender because they're rocks. The show was heavily censored in other countries with dubs changing Ruby from female pronouns to male, and when Rebecca finally won the battle to get the Garnet wedding, the show finally got canceled because Sugar wanted to put Ruby in a dress, with Sapphire in a suit so that it couldn't be erased in other countries. That resulted in the episode strait up not airing in some countries, and CN said no more. The Crewniverse had so much more planned after that, but they ended up having to cut an entire arc down to only five 11 minute episodes to be able to finish the story. This resulted in the final arc being heavily rushed, and the Diamond redemption feeling forced and unearned. Did I mention that even THAT had to be fought for? The only reason we got Steven Universe Future was because of fan outcry, condemning CN for canceling SU over queer representation. I know this isn't a Disney show, but SU is such an important milestone for LGBTQ+ representation in western animation. SU crawled so that TOH could run a marathon.

One thing than I wanted to point out is than in general male gay characters tends to be less in number and less important than lesbian characters in this kind of shows. This isn't an absolute just a statisitcal avrege. That is because it's often easyer to pass off Lesbian relationships as friendships or cut them off completly, in countries who don't want to brodcast LGBTQ themes. After all a bad girl it's fine but a danty man, that is a CALAMITY * sarcasm *

After I found out Geoff and Jeff were a couple, it was so fun to go back through season one and the beginning of season two and catch the little moments they put in of Jeff. Like the moment you already put in at the coffee shop, but also we see them standing next to each other when Scratch is talking to the ghost world in the season two premiere, or in “A Very Hungry Ghost” when they’re doing the couples thing where you feed each other, you know the thing, right? I know they’re small and easily missed, but they add another level of this showing that they always were planning that set up and pay off.

I would like to point out that Dana confirmed that Willow is pan and Hunter is bi! Also, there is Masha, the character with non binary nails and a they/them nametag. I think that's everyone.

The only thing I hate is creators only confirming if a character is LGBT+ on social media and not in the show. They get an entire show to say "oh btw this character is ace" or something but instead they just say it in a tweet or make it super vague. In 2023 that doesn't cut it as the bare minimum anymore and is bad rep. Either say it clearly in the show or it's not cannon, you can't put zero effort in and eat your cake, too.

12:01 Star Butterfly herself was pretty much confirmed as bisexual. In a S3 or 4 episode Star is shown attracted ot not just Marco but also Brunzetta whose a warrior woman. Later she is shown sitting between the two while riding a beast and they added the bisexual flag colors as shes looking at them.

What you said at the end about how media can't change people's sexual orientation or identity is spot on. Similarly put, it's like a person's race. You are born a certain race and can't change it, just as you can't change whether you are LGBTQ+ or not. Positive media representation can help children feel more secure and comfortable and that's what matters.

Also for Amphibia I think (former) Mayor Toadstool and Toadie are implied to be a couple (and just for clarification Toadie is an adult he's just small) and while I don't think anything has been confirmed, you can't convince me that there wasn't something more going on with Andrias, Barrel and Leif

LGBT+ rep is very important because it’s important to normalize it. They exist and It’s simply a part of life. There’s going to encounters of people who are a part of the community. People out there likely have family and/or friends who are LGBT+, and/or a part of the community themselves. It’s important for media to not only represent the LGBT+ community, but all sorts of different backgrounds like different sexual orientations, genders, family configurations, races, ethnicities, etc.

As a bisexual teen learning that Luz was bi was an absolute game changer for me! I already related to Luz from the beginning and her being bi was just the icing on the cake! Not to mention her and Amity’s relationship is just so cute! It doesn’t matter if they’re gay or not, the ship is very well written and realistic. Personally that’s all that matters, I would rather have great characters that are lgbtq than just lgbtq characters. They don’t shove it in people’s faces that they’re gay and just show a healthy couple. Idk if u know this show but She-ra Princess of Power did not do this right. She-ra is a Dreamworks show but the main couple Catra and Adora get compared to Amity and Luz but I just don’t see it other than surface level stuff. I won’t go into detail for triggering reasons but Catra was absolutely terrible to Adora throughout almost the whole show. They had a toxic relationship, Catra’s redemption arc was rushed and unrealistic, there was no real confirmation they liked eachother till the end of the series and their romance just felt shoe-horned in. Their relationship was extremely toxic and people tried making excuses for it because it was a gay ship. If Catra was a guy the internet would be outraged. They used the fact that their gay as an excuse. Which is absolutely terrible and insensitive to victims who have been in similar situations to Adora. Some people think a ship being lgbtq automatically means it’s a good ship which I highly disagree with. While yes I love queer romance but I want it to be healthy and positive too. Sorry for the essay but I just thought I’d mention this. LGBTQ rep is great, just don’t use it as an excuse to have a terrible story. It doesn’t save the quality, trust me.

I couldn't get this out of my head when you first said it, but I have a really hard time agreeing with the idea that Disney (the company) is not homophobic especially after it came out that they gave funds to Florida's "Don't Say Gay bill in 2022 and only said they'd stop doing giving political donations in Florida for the time being once they got called out for it. Disney is not a morally good company and that's been clear throughout its career. I don't think that extends to their workers especially to the ones who fought for any kind of rep on screen through their media. Any claim that Disney is not homophobic should not be protected by them having rep in their TV shows because it was not Disney who did the work to put it there; Disney was the force that its animators and writers had to fight tooth and nail against to have it be there. The same can be said about Cartoon Network and Steven Universe. Yes, Disney is allowing more leeway but again that is thanks to the animators begging for it and the audiences showing their support for the shows with this rep, and lets be honest here, they could do a lot better rep wise then what they've allowed. In reality , confirmations off screen by the creators, signs of queerness passively existing in their creation via a flag or a nail color, or said queerness mainly occurring through minor characters who the audience does not see often is not amazing rep; its the bar minimum. So far, we've gotten a few cases where main characters are actually openly and undeniably queer and its sad. I will admit that we've gotten farther rep wise and I am proud of that, but thats not due to the conglomerate that views us as commodities. It's due to the creators who refused to back down and take the easy way out when it came down to their queer characters. Until Disney shows on a political and financial front that as company they are pro-LGBTQ+ when its not just profitable, I am going to continue to view them as homophobic.

As a straight person, I love to see these kinds of representation. I don't really watch all the shows discussed in this video, but the ones I do watch, like The Owl House and TGAMM, do a perfect job at LGBTQ representation, where it's done in a very respectful and tactful way that doesn't feel like pandering, but at the same time is unquestionably LGBTQ. Lumity is just as adorable and sweet as any well made straight relationship I've seen, and while I still do think Disney does a lot of performative progressivism (Because Lefou dancing with a dude for like 1 second in the 2017 Beauty and The Beast is the most amazing thing for gay rep ever!), the shows you mentioned are definitely not examples of that, and I really do hope we get more awesome LGBTQ rep in the future! And speaking of awesome LGBTQ content, I saw The Birdcage a while back. Amazing movie, definitely check it out!

First off, wonderful video. I love how in-depth you go about the characters and the struggles some creators had getting them in there. One thing I would point out that was missed, I could take a decent guess at why the Proud Family episode was originally pulled. S*ssy is a slur for gay people, and one of the nastier ones at that. Granted, it is an older term not used too much anymore to the point the LGBTQ+ community is trying to reclaim it and it's different spellings, but the use of it alone was very purposeful to make it as blatant as possible this was an episode tackling homophobia. Disney most likely, after learning it was a slur, pulled it out of fear of backlash or just the fact they didn't want an episode with a slur in it. But again, this is a guess on my part. I didn't know it was pulled off of air though. I remember watching this episode as a rerun, so it must have taken them a bit to learn about the word.

One of my favourite shows with LGBTQ+ Rep in it is John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme. It is a radio show you can listen to on BBC sounds. They do sketch comedies. And in quite a lot of them, they use our heteronormative minds to help with the joke. There is one where there is a conversation between two guys and it’s not going at all well or fun. And the punchline is, “Been on many dates?” “Hundreds.” “Any second dates?” “Not one.” They hadn’t established it was a date beforehand and because they were both guys, many of our brains didn’t immediately think it was a date. So when that was revealed it made the punchline so much funnier. They also just have gay couples in general in normal sketches, perhaps because there are only 5 actors in all the sketches, when having a couple in a sketch being able to mix and match gay couples gives much more permutations for the sketches. And in the 9th season which is a bit different to the first 8 we have a lesbian couple on the 1910’s who have a baby together, with the sperm provided by the brother of one of them so the other mum could be as close to the baby as possible genetically speaking. And the brother, as it happens, is AroAce. We also see later down the line in this family in 2020 a gay couple with a kid who are the descendants of that lesbian couple. One of the cast, Caroline Quinlan has a wife. I don’t know whether she is gay or bi or something else, but she is in a same sex relationship. I highly recommend giving the show a listen if you get the chance.

Personally, I think LGBTQ+ representation is fine and people should be able to accept that. It also gives them a way to relate to other people in the community, making them feel special. People shouldn’t make a big deal out of it, let them be.

I love the opening in particular because of how it puts to words better than what I can what I’ve been thinking of for ages. I wholeheartedly support LGBTQ+ representation in media. I also think it needs to be done in varying degrees, be it main characters like Luz and Amity, side characters like Becker in Hailey’s On It, or background characters like Violet’s two dads in Ducktales. I think most shows should have at least one character confirmed LGBT, though if we get some shows without anything, that’s perfectly fine, too. Sometimes shows just don’t feature romance and there’s not much reason to go in depth on orientation, which is totally okay. As a tangent- I may not do much shipping on my own, but I absolutely respect fan works and interpretations for peoples’ favorite shows. And shows that don’t get the main character a significant other/establish their preferences are nice since there’s no pesky canon and it’s basically a blank slate to have fun and be creative. Fan interpretations aren’t the be all/end all and don’t replace proper representation in media, naturally. I just think that if a story doesn’t focus on those aspects, fans getting to have fun with their own headcanons is a respectable byproduct. Ultimately, tangent aside, I do believe representation in media is important and majorly respect where we are with these kinds of things in the industry. And I stand by believing most shows should feature it to some degree, big or small. We’re all people, after all, enjoying media and everyone deserves to feel represented and valid when engaging in these kinds of stories.

What is it with lesbian representation and being perfectly fine but when it’s a male couple that can only be hinted at ok ko for example enid and red action are allowed an on screen kiss while boxman and professor venomous are only allowed hinting I guess

Despite Bob Chapeck making the most stupid a** decision of shortening The Owl House. It actually went on a better road in comparison to other animated shows. You see, shows like Teen Titans, Office Job, Spectacular Spider-Man, and more were canceled and never got the chance to be concluded. This was not the case with The Owl House, where despite the final season being shortened to three 1 hour specials, although, they’re actually three parts of a series finale aired months apart from each other, were given the opportunity to conclude the story, and in my opinion, Dana Terrace and the crew did an excellent job finishing the story and giving a beautiful end to the series.

There's also Lexington from Gargoyles who Weisman (the producer who confirmed Irma). The show got a spinoff comic in the 2006 SLG comics which had Lex crushing on a dude gargoyle named Staghart who prefers Amp. Thankfully Gargoyles got a 2022 comic followup, and they are actually doing something with Lex being gay, and dating Staghart/Amp. Sadly they've got a long-distance relationship going, but hopefully the Phoenix Gate will be a shipper and give the two a chance.

This video is incredible!! I clicked on it thinking it was a compilation not a video essay but I was pleasantly surprised to find well thought out points and a shift in my perspective. I was a vocal supporter of #TheOwlHouse . I wrote plenty of letters, and I was active on Twitter, trying to pester the powers that be (including airing times selected for episode premieres that seemed like they’d happen after the kids went to bed). Maybe that wasn’t the best strategy, but it’s the one that I chose. Maybe you know better than me. I don’t know. But it always felt like they made a homophobic decision, even if they didn’t mean to. Maybe that’s cognitive dissonance on my part, but Disney has a bad track record with this stuff that they are just starting to get better at. According to Dana Terrace herself, this single executive that she talks about (I believe it’s the same person) tried to make her erase Luz’s sexual identity early on. Shortly after that, the team got word that the show was shortened. And it was Disney TVA that had to step in and lobby hard to get the third season at all. Dana was not a part of that discussion. Clearly, there was not enough homophobia at Disney to make them stop the show in the first place or drop it partway, but whether they related back to business decisions or not, they have had a tendency to play lip service (that can easily be cut when it is sold overseas) when it comes to representation. The uproar over there accidental support of Florida’s ‘don’t say gay’ legislation, along with the stir over the ‘Lightyear’ movie, and the feelings, expressed by Pixar about how their concepts were being arbitrarily, trimmed down put Disney’s situation of financial decisions with consequence on full display. Finally, with many of the things you talk about in this video, they are starting to turn that around. One can only hope they have some thing like ‘The Owl House’ in the future, to show that they have changed.

Two things I did noticed though. I'm surprised you never mentioned that Dan Povenmire confirmed Perry the Platypus is asexual and that Dana Terrace confirmed that Willow is Pansexual and Hunter is Bisexual. Speaking of TOH, when you talked about the show being shortened in the third season, I was reminded of how people blamed other shows for TOH's "Cancellation" They did it with TGAMM, they did it with H&G and they did it with Hailey's On It. It's gotten to the point where it's getting annoying. Yeah what happened to TOH sucks, but people need to know that being shortened does NOT mean cancellation. One of my favorite parts about Luz and Amity becoming a couple is the fact that they’re both still awkward around each other, especially at the beginning. It was cool for me to see given I am left handed (depending on the task). Now there in western media Quagmire was revealed to be left handed in on Family Guy episode.

I'm a bisexual guy, I grew up in a homophobic houshold and it had alot of impact to say the least, denied I was bi for years despite my attraction towards guys and girls, I wish this representation existed when I was growing up, it didnt start appearing till I was a late teen early adult, still wish more gay presenting relationships existed but I understand gay presenting relationship are harder to get through screening because misogynism and homophobia mixed but I'm glad there is some even if there mostly background characterswhat, but what we have now is a major step forward abd hopefully we dont take any steps back.

I have ADHD and Autism, and I enjoy watching shows with these representations!! Medias; -Rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles, Donatello. He is autistic coded! -the owl house, Luz Noceda, ADHD coded(or canon?) and Camilla Noceda, who seems to be a masked ADHD mom to me!!! -The Proud family reboot, BB, canonically autistic! (Not really showed, but the family’s reaction was super important to me!) -Gravity falls, Mabel Pines, ADHD representation, AND Dipper pines, who honestly seems to have Autism and Anxiety. -Amphibia, Sprig seems to have ADHD, and of course Marcy’s Autism coding. These are specifically ADHD and Autism representation, but these characters do have other hinted disorders, such as Anxiety, Depression, OCD, and separation anxiety. I hope you take this into possibility for a video!! Extra: I NEED SOMEONE TO COVER HUNTERS PTSD AND ANXIETY!!

I know the show I'm a about to say is not a cartoon nor a Disney show BUT I love it and yea- anyway the show is called Sweet tooth and it came out in 2021 and there are 2 lesbian couples, they are both side characters, one of them is only just one of them and she's waiting for her wife to call her back (for 9 years) and the other is really hard to explain but two of the main characters (that are a couple) live in the same neighborhood and you see them a couple times (also sorry for any bad grammar I really struggle with it) this video just reminded me of it :D

I actually met someone once she was a lesbian and she is an angel!! The kindest girl ive ever met in my life!! Sweetest girl i ever met, she started a conversation and we talked alot, she even made cupcakes such a sweet girl ☺️

I’ve barely seen anyone else even mention it like you have, let alone make a whole video about it. I kinda wish people would talk about it more cause I thought it was pretty decent, not Earths Mightiest Heroes or Spectacular Spider Man levels of amazing, but still ok. I just wish people talked about Marvel Rising more.😞

I love how these shows handled representation, especially TOH which has many LGBTQ+ characters, some of them aren't shown in the show, like Willow being pan and Hunter being bi, but being honest, we had only 43 episodes, Dana didn't have time to show Hunter being attracted to a guy neither to show Willow being attracted to a girl, and its honestly really sad how we could have gotten some in-show representation, but yeah Disney is Disney. Hope they will realise their mistake and do a spin-off/movie/another season or AT LEAST some merchandise

Tbh shows with LGBT rep was one of the reason why I stopped being homophobic but I feel sad how people are hating shows that have LGBT. 🏳‍🌈✝️🏳‍🌈

I think people sleepnon Weblena in DuckTales because it was so underplayed and yet... overstated? Maybe some shipping war stuff with the triplets but it's more just they fumbled the relationship. But, in my heart, the beautiful idiot and pinks are a lovely pair. Lena as a kind of sorceress supreme and Webby as an adventurer who explore mysterious locations as a hobby.

22:31 I will say while things have clearly changed, and obviously each company is different and do things differently, I think the reason people think this way is because of Steven Universe, Rebecca had to fight tooth and nail with Cartoon Network for Ruby and Sapphire’s wedding, sacrificing a longer run time for representation, and while Disney is obviously a different company entirely, it wouldn’t exactly be out of character, so it really put people into this mindset.

They're still too scared to do aromantic/asexual representation where the character isn't some sort of supernatural being, I guess mostly because there's so many people who still think it's a mental illness so they have to make the characters a bit weird too? I get that it wasn't that long ago it was delisted as a mental illness (10 years ago or so), but I'd still like to see more representation without the character having to be bizarre for it to work

Honestly, I could never get into Proud Family because of how much I HATE Lacienega and Dijonay. They’re terrible characters and honestly such toxic friends to Penny, Zoey, and even Michael
