Cumberland Mine Railroad - A Short Primer

An introduction to what we do here on the Cumberland Mine Railroad.
We'll give you some history of myself and the railroad here, along
with a short chat about why we don't use concrete ties and some history
of our 3 locomotives.
Our channel features some very unique content about railroading,
videos of things most folks never get to see or hear about, along
with some cool rail fanning videos. We bring the railroad to you!

As always , you are a wealth of information Dave. The history of your employment with Cumberland is quite interesting. My dad said he remembers the old brand new US Steel equipment when steel was King in our area of Ohio. He said it was the proudest time of his life when we made things in the US and didn't import everything. Your pride in your job is really obvious and it says a lot about you. Thanks for taking us all along for the " ride".

Alex Drake. I'm from Western Australia. I know how your father feels when he mentioned regarding steel. Western Australia has the biggest iron ore export in Australia. Selling to China. We then buy the product back from China. Rio Tinto have an office in the City. Perth. The price of steel has almost doubled recently. Someone is making a lot of money and its not me.

Love the history and the information about the Cumberland train. Grew up in Bobtown and always remembered going down to my family farm in Davis town and watching the train go through. Lucky I work in the trucking industry and it's awesome to know that you guys keep the coal on rails for us to haul!!

Awesome Dave and glad to have you with us. Back during that time Cumberland was a really good place to work, we were amazing back then. Last company was not very good, but our new owners inherited a mess and are really trying hard to build it back to what we used to have. They treat their employees very well and are spending enormous amounts of money for up grades, all much needed.

Good Intro. I appreciate the facts and figures, practices, coal info, etc. Years ago my wife and I lived in Neu Joisey. Most of our travel during that 3.5 years was to PA. I am a Westerner and prefer the West, but PA did become my favorite Eastern state. The last thing we did together before she died suddenly was to ride a train . So now I am back in my rural northeastern corner of California. They tore up the tracks here so I never get to see a train anymore unless I go down to Reno for appointments or shopping. So anyway I have seen the intro and appreciate the link. You are a good video narrator. Michael.

Several years ago I spent a lot of time on the VR railcams, made a lot of friends. They all wanted to know what I did on the RR. 'So I started making videos to show them. Never in my wildest dreams did I realize or think back then this channel would become so popular. it's just amazing to me that people watch this stuff. Thanks for the kind words, and yes I guess I am a good teacher.

My father worked for Southern Pacific on the Oregon coast from 72 until he retired from up in 2014 .I got to ride in cabooses " engins " he had a high railer and would close 3 bridges one in cops bay and 2 on rivers . I loved going to work with him if he was on a bridge for hrs because of traffic we would crab and fish .I recently moved to white oak PA and found you while looking at pa history .I enjoy the content

Thank you for this video. I used to volunteer on a tourist railway. 30" gauge, about 14 miles long. No tunnels, 5 bridges and lots of curves. Max speed 15 Mph. Burnt coal, but just started on oil before the pandemic and I left. Enjoying your videos.

@@ccrx6700 The railway is known as "Puffing Billy" and runs between Belgrave and Gembrook in Victoria, Australia. The main type of engine used was designed by Baldwin, and built locally. These have been supplemented by two Garratt engines and a some diesel.

I don’t know why. I didn’t especially love trains as a kid but I had a train set I loved playing with. I liked it. But these videos are great to watch and I like you Dave. Great disposition, friendly, sense of humor, add all that up and you have a winner.

Thanks for the additional information in this video, Dave. Number 1 has a bad case of cancer in her nose/cab area. I hope one day she'll get a top-to-bottom overhaul and repaint to keep her looking fresh and new for the beginning of her second 50-years. Those SD38-2's are probably worth their weight in gold to many railroads. I bet many railroad power managers wish that they could buy brand new ones yet today. Under appreciated in it's time of production.

I agree Scotty on the poor shape she is in. I remember her brand new in all her glory. It has been repainted twice, once professionally and that was beautiful and once the guys did it here with brushes, big difference. All this and #22 have done all their life is haul coal and a lot of it! Dave, thank you for this video with the details of the Cumberland mine. The operation there fills a vital role in the energy supply of this country. The background of your railroad is something I had not known as a newcomer here, but I have to admit; those locomotives make such a pretty sound when they are idling it almost gives me goosebumps. Just as you loved seeing the big US Steel logos on the sides of your locomotives, I enjoyed seeing the US Air Force winged stars on all of the aircraft I worked on when I was in. Thank you again for this informative video.

Locos do sound pretty good, we have some new contract loco mechanics and they are doing a great job at keeping these old girls running despite their old age and lack of maintenance in the past. I make power here in Colorado, I worked in coal plants that have been closed and tore down for 10years. I work with gas turbines now. Aero engines used in planes GE CF-6-80. They are LM6000’s PD’s as a combined cycle making steam. Also run LMS 100’s, we have 2 of them. I miss the coal plants, different work, but it was fun.

Love this channel. So glad I found it. You are one very, very fortunate man to have a job that has lasted since the 1970's in Pennsylvania coal. That is almost unheard of. But will have a vid coming out sometime soon on dumping the cars in freezing weather that you will enjoy. Will make a good one on loading sometime later this year my friend, but don't hold your breathe on when it will get shown. Right now got over 40 videos posted just waiting to get published. I love how you take time to explain stuff; I did indeed have that same question about the tamper! Bingo! Nailed it. Yes that would take awful work doing the adjustments for the tamper. Wow! Way you explained it, it reminded me of my dad explaining crane's from Pettibone. 😌

Saves a ton of time from having to run a loco around on each end of the track to load and unload the train. I was thinking about the concrete ties. One solution could be to have duplicate switches mounted two inches apart and relays to select the current height by selecting the upper or lower set of switches. That'll make it possible to make a button select between wood and concrete. Awesome video as always, Dave! You're the best ambassador for railroading there is!

You are a thinking man Kristian! I like that. Some tampers do have a 5th limit switch for that purpose. The Jupiter 2 operating system did away with the limit switches and you can toggle on the computer screen between concrete and wood ties. We are looking into an upgrade on my tamper to a Jupiter 2 system. Lot of money and time to get accomplished, I will keep you informed about how that pans out. Gonna do a vid sometime in the way future on the differences between concrete and wood ties, there is more involved than just the tamper limit switches why we don't use them. Concrete ties are perfect for light transit applications however, There is a lot to discuss about the differences, too much to put in a comment.

Thank You VERY MUCH for this particular video! 👍👍 I have been a railfan since the mid 1970s. I have learned a lot about "railroadin" since I started, like many of your videos prove, there is A LOT more that I don't know. So, please keep schooling me with what you and your railroad does, even if it 2nd nature to you and you may think a fact may otherwise be boring to us.... they are not boring. I particularly enjoyed you telling about the history of the company, the railroad, and how all the coal is off loaded barges. Add to that, your work history with the company. I haven't watched all your past videos yet, but in case, there is not a previous video on the coal being loaded on the barges, and that aspect of the operation, a video or 2 on the subject would be nice.

Dave, Fresh out of High School in August of 1977 I applied at the Operating Engineers and got in. I'm retired now and it was a good ride BUT I really wish I would have applied at the railroads instead. Chicago had just about all of the class 1's before the merger area. You have what I would consider a very nice gig!
