In the 80s the Reading 6 chime which arrived in Chama in a barrel or box along with some other whistles, the C&TS loved its sound and was functioning perfectly until it started shrieking. "Cracking" being the correct terminology for shrieking. The whistle cracked because the languid plate was very worn from years of use. The edges eroded from steam cutting. Cracking is the screeching sound, this is because the steam pressure becomes so great that the sound waves bouncing off the end of the chamber become so increased that the chamber can't handle the volume of steam thus producing the "cracking" sound.... The C&TS tried everything to disassemble it for a repair including a week in the hot tank, to no avail. Unfortunately the truth is the whistle disappeared or got stolen....
(This is actually a re-uploaded version of the original video I made on this, the original one felt plain and had some problems, the sound wasn't in sync with the video and the descriptions in the video were too short of a time to read but since then I've made some edits fixed some of the problems gave it better quality and also added some more clips of the whistle)
