Cummins 24 valve P-pump conversion first start up.

Sorry for the crappy camera work. I don't have a tripod, or four extra hands....
This engine will be the new heart for my '57 REO F-20 truck.
I just replaced the head gasket and had the bores/pistons soaking in oil while it was apart, which is a big contributor to the smoke at start up. It will get new injectors and more timing before I install in my '57 REO truck.

Three vp44's with labor $7500. It's worth it to convert, tunability is a bonus. Almost at 600k miles with my '01. .New truck similar trim $85000+, you can convert and restore for alot less. Costs $10 to inspect, no emissions test required. No blowby either.

It’s probably a state inspection for using it on state roads, the state I live in used to do them and the area I live in doesn’t require emissions testing either, the city does though

those old style pumps have to turn over a lot to get started, for example if you run out of fuel. but started right up

Yup. You have to question how many engine conversions they have done. Probably none....

@@poolmyke - don't need to have done a single engine conversion to know, that's an aweful lot of smoke and that you need to prime the fuel system. What was your reason to do a P-7100 swap?

I have a 24 Valve sitting on a pallet in my shop was thinking about converting it over....I got the engine basically for free so most likely do it....It has the VP44 on it now.

@@tomriggle3217 - if you change from a vp44, you will need to change the timing cover, injection pump gear, throttle linkages, injection lines, injectors need to be shimmed or machined for proper pop off pressure, and ofc the pump itself. Then you will have to deal with the CEL light. Flash Ecm... Electrical tape... Whatever you fancy lol Otherwise you could in theory use the p7100 (p-pump 94-98) or the ve (pre 94) given these modifications.

@@tomriggle3217 - Also another big one is the oil inlet... You need to pull oil from somewhere to lubricant the p-pump... Unlike the vp44 which relies on extra fuel pressure to lubricate it.

I hope you're still reading and answering comments. I have a 99 24v that's had more than its share of problems. I've got invested than I'll ever recover. So I'm to the point of either cut my losses or go in deep for the long hall. Bottom line.... How much was it to make this happen ?

the parts alone cost id say 2500+ not counting labor, its an expensive conversion but you have the most reliable fuel system possible, plenty of options for making power, and you can install a "afc live" which is an in cab fuel adjuster which is basically your own personal tuner to adjust the afc housing any way you like at any time.

+Christian Feagai It's a gamble. I had a 12 valve, so I pulled everything off it. It just happened to be a good set up. If you buy a new kit, you know for sure that it will work.

It does not knock. It has good oil pressure. Good solid engine.

I did mine two years ago, and put it in a 2008 F250 crew cab. Love it, but I have never been able to get it to idle right. I’ve done a ton of research on this and it sounds like it’s the VP 44 injectors working with the p pump. I had them setup by the shop that did my pump, off idle it’s good , just at idle it sounds like one cylinder is “off”.

They say the 24 valve lift pump is too weak the p pump should see 30 psi. Most people run the fass or air dog. I ran the 12 valve cam that has the lift pump lobe and I used the correct mechanical lift pump.

Sorry for my ignorance. Did you change the crappy computerized VP44 for a mechanical injection pump, In this case, the parameters are ok? Mean fuel press and quantity of fuel?

You will need an upgraded lift pump and better injectors.

When you finish this conversion the engine work under parameters? no smoke no power lost? I will try to deal with my actual crappy system but I will like to know how much could be make all that conversion

@@georgegautier372 I've been running it with stock injectors and 24valve lift pump for years. My P7100 is only a 175hp pump. Lift pump and injector upgrade is just a suggestion

Rovin Puran that was a few years ago. The injectors were not thoroughly bled. The bugs have been worked out of it and it has been running good in my truck
