Working for cummins it really makes me proud to see the first engines still going. The simplicity and precision are beauty motion. Here is to clessie.

So this is really a Cummins oil engine? That is so cool!

the first Thermoils had a bad habit of breaking in half.... the Hvid injection system is pretty interesting though... www.coolspringpowermuseum.org/Publications/Flywheel/Flywheel_201210.htm

More info about Cummins and the Hvid... it seems Cummins developed a timing mechanism which is certainly an improvement. www.gasenginemagazine.com/gas-engines/the-original-cummins-diesels

superhogult Cool so if you work for Cummins, tell them to stop putting your precision instruments in garbage can bodies! Your engines deserve more than that. Also what do you do for Cummins?

That is a thermoil that Cummings bought. It is not the last engine of its kind. I have a thermoil, 9hp. But a neat engine to say the least.

Given the age of those who restore these and the process involved in starting them (lots of back and forth) i hereby decree the starting procedure for this machine to be the "Cummins Horizontal oil cha-cha".

Interesting engine. “Owner”, who is not the “restorer”, fussed with it entirely too much prior to starting it.

9hp @ 450 rpm with a 6 inch bore and a 9 inch stroke. I wonder what the torque output is? That sound it makes is so cool!
@RustyCarnahan8 жыл бұрын
When you use the standard formula to calculate horsepower (Torque x RPM/5252 = Horsepower) and fill in the values we know, we have an equation that looks like this: Torque x 450/5252 = 9. When we multiply both sides by 5252, we're left with Torque x 450 = 47268. Then divide both sides by 450 and we're left with Torque equalling out to 105.04 foot pounds.

I would like to hear its sound when loaded. So many of these engines are just stationary and idle.
@jickdawmonelason72397 жыл бұрын
RustyCarnahan seems like it would be somewhat more than that with such heavy reciprocating mass.
@Shade_tree_garage017 жыл бұрын
Also if it's the last, why don't you try to preserve it and give someone it to make molds of parts with it and create more!
@dl87z286 жыл бұрын
This is the last running Model U. It's documented by Cummins. Trust me, you've never seen one. You may have see other Cummins oil engines but not a Model U

Poof! the flyweel is the secret. Keeps it turning till it may fire again. John Deer made a fortune from very similar engines on their tractors well into the 1960's Slow and crude but bombproof.

Not a bi9g improvement over steam.
@bigchevy807 жыл бұрын
brdwonder lol you're joking, right? No stoking a fire constantly or cleaning of ashes, no dangerous high boiler pressure, no having to get the boiler inspected and certified, etc. Just fill it with fuel oil and keep the grease cups/oilers full. I'd call that a huge improvement...
@ludditeneaderthal6 жыл бұрын
Also a huge efficiency difference. Non compound steamers get about 5% of the heat they burn to do work. That red garage queen probably hits 20% on her worst day. Even with compounding, a flash boiler, and liquid fuel the Stanley steamer just couldn't complete with the crude junk car gas engines of their day when it came to economy, and those gassers were hogs compared to diesels. Don't let the size fool you, that was so they would last forever, not because they had to be that huge. Don't forget, those engines are built to work gear designed for steam power, so they had to make their power at similar speeds, and output similar torque to the same belts as the steamer Cummins wanted you to replace with their product.
